Cornerback Demetrius Douglas has flipped his commitment from Oregon to the Gophers. He is the son of former Gophers receiver Omar Douglas.

The new Oregon staff didn't want him.

Sssssuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrre they didn't. [;)]

Now Fleck has added a 3 star 6'5" receiver out of Kansas.

Not calling a commit three weeks after being hired and offering 100 other dudes is kind of a tell.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (1/18/2017 3:20:04 PM)

Fleck just added his third QB recruit, Reyondous Estes from East St. Louis, Ill. High School. Not very big at 6' and 160, but he is 3 star.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (1/18/2017 6:05:42 PM)

I need to hear Sid's take on this. Not because I care but it's been a tough week and I need a good laugh with the pronunciation of his name.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (1/18/2017 6:06:24 PM)

BTW- is there ANY chance we can get a 4 or 5 star? Gasp in the room.....

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (1/18/2017 8:49:53 PM)

Stars are overrated. And no, it will take several years of real success before a 5 star comes here. Any kid with that rating has every royalty program in the country recruiting him.

Steve Lentz -> RE: Gopher Football (1/18/2017 10:29:17 PM)

Minnesota has to pick up it's recruiting. Nebraska is in the same boat. Recruiting has become so competitive in the Big 10. Ohio State and Michigan are putting together superb recruiting classes. Penn State is working on getting into the top 10. Maryland is doing very well. There is more to it than stars, but the teams that get the most 4 and 5 stars are usually the one's that win.
I think Minnesota and Wisconsin are examples of teams that lately have played better than their recruiting ratings might indicate.

Unlike Michigan and Ohio State, Minnesota has to start picking up 4-5 JUCO guys every year. Most of those guys have worked out pretty well for them in recent years.

He's small, but he's got a solid arm and he's quick as hell.

I hope he's able to stick at QB.

Here are the important recruits visiting this weekend. These kids are either uncommitted or currently committed to other schools.

S - Kendarian Handy-Holly - (scout profile) - a 4-star safety. Handy-Holly was pursued by the former staff and is being aggressively pursued by the new staff. Landing Handy-Holly would be a huge get and really bump this class in terms of overall talent, particularly at a position of desperate need.
DT - Kevin Kegler (scout profile) - 3-star defensive tackle who is currently committed to South Florida.
S - Adam Beck (scout profile) - a 3-star safety who is currently committed to Texas Tech.
WR - Jafar Armstrong (scout profile) - a 3-star WR who is currently committed to Missouri. Armstrong is 6’0”, 200 lbs and runs a 4.4 40.
DE - Boye Mafe (scout profile) - Hopkins product who has a Gopher offer and is essentially deciding between Minnesota and Rutgers.

Just for Jeff, 4 STAR safety Kendarian Handy-Holly from Jackson High in Alabama commits to the Gopher.

Like Tim said, Handy-Holly commits to us.

Adam Beck has decommitted from Texas Tech, and appears likely to join us as well.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (1/22/2017 3:44:51 PM)

How can you not be excited about all of this recruiting.

Claeys had what, 15 or so?

This guy is picking them up right and left.

You have to give a lot of credit to Mark Coyle for the way he handled things. He got his guy and got him under contract within 48 hours. Fleck was here and recruiting before there could be any negative impact on recruiting. Coyle gives me the impression of a big time AD. A real air knowing what he wants and how to get it done. A real refreshing break for the Mickey Mouse operations under Teague and Maturi.

What kind of goofy name is Handy Holly?

Sounds like a x-Mas carol.

I initially said some harsh things about Coyle mostly regarding the timing of those suspensions.

But after the dust has settled he did handle things well. Not letting the convicts run the asylum (or whatever that saying is) and moving on from Claeys swiftly to Fleck.

Fleck obviously has hit the ground running. Got to like the enthusiasm he has.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (1/22/2017 9:49:06 PM)

And here's Beck:

Adam Beck @adambeck_
7 National Championships, 18 Big Ten Titles. I'll be signing February 1st to the University of Minnesota. Thank you, Everyone. #SKIUMAH

Gophers linebacker recruit Bryson Jackson flipped his oral commitment to Baylor on Sunday, he said on Twitter.

Jackson, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound player from Mansfield, Texas, committed to the Gophers under head coach Tracy Claeys on Dec. 13. Jackson had offers from Houston, Boise State and Fresno State, among others.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Football (1/23/2017 2:33:42 PM)

I read somewhere where the Gophers had a shortage of DL, WR, QB for 2017 and only 1 DL recruit coming in.....Fleck has picked up 2 DL, 3 WR, and 3 QB since he started.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (1/30/2017 7:45:28 AM)

New Gophers football coach P.J. Fleck picked up four more verbal commitments ahead of national signing day this week.

New Jersey athlete Ihmir Smith-Marsette, Georgia cornerback Justus Harris and Iowa defensive linemen Royal Silver and Austin Schirck announced their commitments to the Gophers on Sunday.

Smith-Marsette, from Newark, N.J., had committed to Rutgers before withdrawing last week. The 6-1, 155-pound cornerback is a three-star prospect by the recruiting site Scout and had offers from Iowa and Boston College.

Harris flipped his commitment from Cincinnati to Minnesota on Sunday night. The 5-10, 170-pound corner from Roswell, Ga., also had offers from Vanderbilt and Rutgers.

Silver is a junior college addition out of Iowa Western. He’s listed at 6-4 and 290 pounds and received offers from Syracuse and Memphis. Schirck, a 6-5, 265-pound defensive tackle from Carroll, Iowa, rescinded his commitment to Northern Iowa after receiving an offer from the Gophers on Sunday.

Minnesota has 27 verbal commitments in the 2017 class, which doesn’t become official until Wednesday.
