Nebraska recruit Bryce Benhart caps an undefeated wrestling season with a Minnesota 6A State Heavyweight Championship.
We desperately need some big nasty Offensive Lineman.

Per the Guillotine there are 3 classes for Minnesota HS wrestling. Which seems to be correct. Benhart won AAA and the #1 ranked heavyweight in the nation Daniel (call me Gregg) Kerkvliet won by fall in the finals for AA. It's a shame that Benhart and Kerkvliet can't wrestle for the true state champion. I get having championships for teams sorted by school size. I don't get individual championships sorted by school size. Anyway this doesn't have much to do with Gopher Football I just wanted to give some props to the Minnesota Heavyweight that is the best in the nation.

Blake Cashman killing it at the combines.

https://www.twincities.com/2019/03/03/gophers-blake-cashman-has-top-times-at-nfl-combine/

He no doubt improved his stock. My guess. He likely still won't be a full time starter but he'll definitely make money playing football as a special teamer and situational player.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (4/11/2019 8:28:07 AM)

Spring game is going indoors to practice facilities Saturday
No longer open to the public due to the lack of space

Gophers get 4 Star QB recruit. Hope we can keep him. They're calling it a hard commit 100% for whatever that means.

Athan Kaliakmanis

QB, Minnesota Golden Gophers

Minnesota received a verbal commitment from four-star 2021 QB Athan Kaliakmanis.

Kaliakmanis also has offers from schools like Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Iowa and Iowa State; among others. The 6-foot-4, 190-pound signal-caller is considered one of the best quarterbacks in the class, and is also considered a dual-threat with legs that can make plays on top of his arm. He's also going to be joined by his brother, Dino Kaliakmanis, who also committed to the Gopher as a three-star wide receiver. The Kaliakmanis connection is headed to Minnesota.

Evaluation

Has good height. Still has a lot of room to fill in and needs to keep adding strength and bulk. Shows the arm talent to make all the necessary throws. Snappy, quick release with good ball speed and consistent zip on his short to intermediate passes. Athletic enough to escape pressure. Keeps plays alive and can make throws from odd angles without setting his feet. Calm under pressure and does not panic. Will stand in and make throws with pressure in his face. Good with his feet but not likely to be a consistent running threat in college. Still needs to keep working on reading defenses and making quick decisions while refining mechanics. Has physical tools and intangibles to be a Power 5 starter and develop into an NFL player.

To show you how BAD Nebraska football has fallen off a cliff, this is the 1st time in 56 years that they didn't have a player drafted.

Coach Frost has a huge hill to climb, but He will.

Steve you a Huskers fan? How about the huge recruiting win for the gophers? Including his brother. They are both sophomores, but nothing about them being twins.

Gopher fan every game of the season except when they play the Huskers. Both teams are drawing notice as up and coming programs. There hasn't been this much excitement in Nebraska since the 90's. Frost is the real deal and a home grown boy. He could've had almost any job he wanted and turned down some great opportunities to come home. Still will take a few years to rebuild a really weak situation. Fleck has impressed many as well. He's getting some talent in that program. I like the direction of both.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (5/1/2019 9:06:37 AM)

I don't remember if I mentioned it here, but I personally gave Fleck a handshake and a verbal pat on the back for bringing the ax home. My husband was running a 10K recently that started and ended at The Bank (ending was inside at the 50 yard line), and at the starting line Coach Fleck and Goldy were there to cheer people on. Once the horn went off to get the runners started, Fleck was high-fiving everyone who ran past him, and when the crowd finally disappeared into the distance he stayed to pose for photos with some kids who were there with parents who were NOT running.

I gave him a handshake and told him that my in-laws were big Badger fans and could be a bit obnoxious at times, so I thanked him for bringing the ax home. His answer was: "got some bragging rights, huh?" with a big smile. Seemed like a super nice guy, and with the kids he was great - asking their names and then chatting with them and posing for pictures with them.

Objectively speaking how good can we expect the Gophers football team to be this year?

Matters how fast he can get that beef up to speed on the oline.....they should have their best year in 2 years when Falele is a Junior. They should have a great running attack this year with the big line and experience back at RB.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (5/3/2019 1:13:55 PM)

Lets just say we've got some work to do.
Pre-season polls ..

#5 Ohio State
#7 Michigan
#13 Penn State
#20 Nebraska
#21 Wisconsin
#23 Iowa

How much do you want to bet at least 3 of those teams wind up outside the top 25?

3 players have de-committed from the boat in the past month.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (5/22/2019 6:54:06 AM)

Meh. Teams average almost 5 decommits every recruiting season according to 247. Not a big deal.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (5/22/2019 7:07:08 AM)

And just like that, Fleck gets a commitment from a 4 star graduate transfer CB from Michigan.

NICE!!. As for the decommits were they some of our better recruits?

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (5/24/2019 7:04:44 AM)

Wow, lost another one. Randal Grimes, the WR who was transferring from USC switched to UNLV. He says it's to play at home.

I wonder if some of this is a by product of locking in commitments so early, like Fleck does.

IIRC Grimes was supposed to be one of our better recruits.
