Terrible effort by the Gophers. The game was lost near the end of the fist quarter with the Gophers at around the Wisconsin 45 yard line third down and two and the Gophers get stuffed on a gutless run up the middle. They punted and played like they were unprepared the rest of the game.

Tell you what a sucker I am. First half, about midfield and we are up still. Green comes in and I actually thought for a minute that we finally throw the ball and it's going to be huge. What a maroon I am [:o]

As you have been saying for some time now, Green needs to do something other than keep the ball out of the wild cat. Wisconsin, the fans and everyone watching on TV knew what was going to happen. Then Fleck followed it up by punting and the mojo was lost, never to return.

Why not pass it

Why Why Why

what do you have to lose early in the game? The momentum was pissed away.

Badgers figured out how much mn was over-pursuing, and acted accordingly in the offensive and special team areas.

Announcers talked about how hard their d line was slanting. They were ready for 90% of the run plays. As noted, not much imagination from the U.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (11/30/2019 9:02:35 PM)

Another thing that the coaches blew. Crowd noise, bad weather and they were coming full throttle. Would 1 or 2 hard counts have really been that risky? Make them think when they are coming all out like that. It's really not rocket surgery.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (11/30/2019 9:57:22 PM)

Great Season Meaningful games

Blah blah blah

Yeah I get it

but it COULD have been even better. Back to SOS with some of my friends who claim to have suffered through the hard times and this is all good now.

Headed in right direction? Yes

Satisfied? No way. This was a step back by the coaches.

GopherFan34 -> RE: Gopher Football (12/1/2019 10:33:34 AM)

When you play not to lose, you typically do. The Gophers played like they were just happy to be there. The Badgers played like they were pissed off about losing the axe last yr and they wanted it back.. We saw the results. That being said, the Gophers still have a ways to go to match up talent for talent. Tackling was an issue all yr and it hasn't gotten better. In reality, they beat one good team all yr. I know 10 and 2 is a huge step for this program, but it kind of feels like they caught a huge scheduling break this yr. I think Fleck is headed in the right direction, but recruiting always tells the story.

stfrank -> RE: Gopher Football (12/1/2019 10:46:29 AM)

The Badgers beat the Gophers the way they always do, by being stronger and better up front. We got man handled for the most part, and there was absolutely no running room or time to pass all day. Against the lesser teams we were able to control the line, but we showed yesterday that we have a ways to go before we can play with the big boys.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (12/1/2019 12:22:04 PM)

I don't consider Wisconsin the big boys. They didn't impress me as a team that should have been out of our league at all. I was actually rather unimpressed with Wisconsin. Unfortunately, I was incredibly unimpressed with the Gophers. That was about as bad as they have played all year.

The ease at which the backup QB for Northwestern carved up our defense was a harbinger of things to come.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Football (12/2/2019 7:56:44 AM)

The big thing Wisconsin did was have 5 Dlineman most of the game....we didn't have an answer for it. I don't know why we never throw screens to our RBs?

When we needed to go for it on 4th and 1 with the wind, we punted. I don't understand why we kept running up the gut with our smallest rb also (Smith) when the other two are more physical.

Our big Oline couldn't generate anything in the rushing game. Big pussies.

Badgers blitzed all day and we failed to pick up 90% of them and didn't set up screens/quick hitters to counter

Refs stunk. William's PI'd Johnson big time on those two plays to the EZ when the game was still in the balance.

I place the blame much more on Fleck and Gophers, but it was ridiculous the way Johnson and Bateman were getting their arms and jerseys grabbed on every play play without a single call.

Terrible coaching by the Gophers staff. No adjustments made prior to the game to cope with a much stronger Wisconsin D-line. No adjustments made at halftime to rerverse the poor offense in the first half. Just run the same plays they did vs. lesser opponents.

Lots of ways to look at what's happened this year
I see ONE quality win so far
The weak schedule is starting to be a reality right now.
The most important thing is, where does the program go, and how are they seeing it?
Because there's tons of work to do yet, to get to the lofty heights we THOUGHT we were already at.
We were never a #7 team in the country. We better plan to be, and we better know how we will eventually get there.
Unfortunately, we lose a lot of good players this year.
Fleck's incredible recruiting prowess will be put to the test from here out.
I was very happy that there were a couple HUGE CFB games, that took the focus off our game once the bubble burst.
Helped smooth over some of the embarrassment. The rest of the B10 had to be going … "whew, knew they weren't getting that good"
Like I said, the real work starts today. Are we happy with being better, or are we hungry now that we see how much fun being a legit contender could be.
The nation and the networks have treated us VERY well during the good times this season.
Now that they will go away, you have to work in anonymity again, to better yourselves. Should be fun to watch and see how it goes.
We were definitely still "out-programmed" Saturday.
There's a level of "elite" even int he B10 that we are not at, yet. Iowa and Wiscy made sure we understood that.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Football (12/2/2019 10:23:13 AM)

Next year they will have most of the offense back....hopefully they recruited enough talent for the defense....they overachieved most of the year (On Defense) with basically 3 great players (Winfield, Harris, and Coughlin) and patch-worked the rest.....I know they have a ton of redshirts coming in.

The difference is that those two have been at this level for years. We're the upstarts in the group. They have a been there done that, know how to do it again culture, that we still lack.

All in all, I don't know how we can look at this season as a failure in any way. The Gophers were picked to finish second to last and they finished within a win of the Big Ten championship game.

The question now is whether this is another step on the path to legitimacy or a crescendo to be followed by a drop off and start over process. As you said, if Fleck's recruiting prowess bears fruit, the Gophers could have similar opportunity next year and maybe even finish it off better than this year.

As to Fleck's coaching, he seems to able to coach players up in practice, but his game planning and in game decisions need work.

Fleck's specialty is offense (Specifically QB & WR)...hopefully the Def Cord stays and we get the recruits. I think Fleck won't have any trouble recruiting QBs and WRs now as he turns them into NFL Prospects.

We had an almost elite offense this year and our Def Cord did a really good job to hide weaknesses on defense.

I don't.
It's been a blast.

I've stayed very calm on these losses. I took heat weeks back for saying we hadn't won anything until we beat these last two opponents.
We're getting closer. And that's what my comments today were meant to convey.
As you say, it takes time to become one of those teams who can compete with anyone. It's our first year knocking on that door.
My point was simply, it's easy to fall back. Sure hoping we don't.

bstinger -> RE: Gopher Football (12/2/2019 10:48:39 AM)

Wisconsin is probably the better team but I'd like to see us play them in good weather. Our strength going in was our ability to throw and the conditions did NOT do us any favors.

Soft schedule, sure, next year doesn't look that hard either. No OSU or PSU. Odd that Iowa and Wiscy are early games next year. Expectations are raised, can they better their best? Will definitely miss the Sr's but the cupboard isn't bare. Hit the weights boys, can't be shoved around next year like we were against Hawkeyes and Badgers.

Fleck has some in game improving to do for sure.

Win the Bowl game and keep rowing all winter.

Good posts guys
Agreed on all of it

Michigan would have kicked them too

It was fun and lofty ground they tread on
Reality bit big time

Fleck has to be, in game

More decisive
More creative
Able to adjust quickly

When playing the big boys and stuff isn’t working
Right direction? Next year they won’t sneak up on anyone

Honestly the best thing that could happen would be to get dissed preseason again

Having a chip on the shoulder is s a motivation tool any coach loves to use

Our ability to throw was hampered more by Wisonsin's ability to hold our receivers with impunity and our line's inability to give Morgan time to throw than the elements.

Badgers got stuck earlier by Ohio State
I expect it again
Their clutch method of covering won’t be overlooked in this game

I have an "in" on the Gopher offensive line (have tried to not say too much about that) … I know one of them personally and have seen the others in passing, off the field. Anyway, I would have to say our OLine has size.
As far as nasty, our OLine has size. As far as quickness, our OLine has size. Just saying, it's always worried me, when we got to see some "real" DLines.
Recruit some nasty, please.

It did not help losing Martin and the Oline behemoth early
Actually loved the early play calling, it was another game where our OC set them up perfectly for the early TD
His game plan seemed to fall apart later, but the dude was ready to roll
Felt like if we had finished that second drive, we may be talking about a different outcome today.

Better them than us at this point, imo.
That's why I wasn't devastated by the loss of the dream. We aren't ready for that stage or that team.
They're AAA college football. We play AA.
