Bateman thirdteam all America

Winfield FIRST ream

Wow

He kind of vanished in thes last part of the season

IMO

His numbers blew away the kid who won the national award for best DB
Case of strength-of-schedule playing into it I suppose
And bias against not being a traditional powerhouse.
He was a helluva player for us, imo.

Oh I’m not poo-pooing him

Maybe the last few gameplanned him better

I thought he had to cover more vs roaming around and making plays

Whoops, must have came out wrong, wasn't thinking you were … we're good. [:D]

If the best players are going to skip the bowl games they might as well not have them.

Can't the kids get an insurance policy or something to cover a major injury?

You work so hard to earn that bowl appearance and then skip it, doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I get the financial reasons, but it doesn't make sense. They could've gotten hurt just as easily in the last game of the season. If I was an NFL GM I would be leery of guys that do this. They obviously put themselves ahead of the team. That will happen at contract time too.

Be interesting to see if he blows off the outback bowl and then plays in the senior bowl.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (12/16/2019 2:42:11 PM)

The gophers needed someone besides Winfield to step up

None did

Part of the end result

According to ESPN

#37 recruiting class

TENTH best in the conference

I think Rivals has us #32 in the nation and something like 6th in the Big Ten.

The ratings are much bullshit. All they do is total up all of the stars after the kids' names names and divide by the number of recruits. Iowa and the Gophers had the same number of 4 star recruits and filled the rest of their class out with 3 stars. Because Iowa had 4 fewer kids in their class, their 4 star recruits weren't as diluted by the number of 3 stars. They wound up like 3 or 4 spots ahead of us as a result. You can take any block of 10 in the ratings and their isn't a whole hell of a lot of difference from 1 to 10.

Gophers flip Boston College commit Jah Joyner on the first day of the early signing period
By Megan Ryan DECEMBER 18, 2019 — 10:47AM

The Gophers flipped a former Boston College commit Wednesday, one of the surprises at the start of a three-day early signing period.

Jah Joyner, a 6-4, 225-pound defensive end out of Connecticut, is a three-star recruit, according to 247Sports.com. He made 24 sacks in his last two high school seasons and was a 2019 All-State Top-26 Team member as well as a first team all-county honoree. He notched 24 sacks in his final two high school seasons.

Joyner sent in his national letter of intent at 6:44 a.m, but he wasn't the first of the Gophers' 27-man class. That actually went to Australian punter Mark Crawford who, thanks to time zones, officially signed Tuesday evening. His signing was a complete surprise, apparently a closely guarded secret for Gophers coach P.J. Fleck and his staff. The soon-to-be 26-year-old right footer is set to enroll in January. 247Sports.com has him as a two-star recruit, at 6-3, 225 pounds.

German defensive end Melle Kreuder kicked off the actual day at 5:55 a.m., and signings rolled in from there. Here's a list of which 2020 Gophers have made it official:

Ohio defensive end Gage Keys and his 20 tackles for a loss this year.
Ohio defensive back Miles Fleming, an all-state selection this year for his work athletically and academically that compiled 2,130 passing yards and 16 touchdowns, as well as 1,701 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns in his high school career.
IMG Academy linebacker Jaqwondis Burns, who will join the sophomore trio from the Florida school, quarterback Zack Annexstad and offensive linemen Curtis Dunlap Jr., and Daniel Faalele.
Florida receiver Douglas Emilien, who led his high school team in all-purpose yards and touchdowns, including 36 receptions for 595 yards and 12 touchdowns.
Canadian offensive lineman Tyrell Lawrence, who spent his senior season at Clearwater Academy in Florida.
Florida cornerback Jalen Glaze and his 103 tackles, seven interceptions (two pick sixes), two forced fumbles and a blocked punt in his last two years of high school football.
Georgia cornerback Victor Pless, a state champion this season with 44 tackles, four interceptions and a touchdown.
Michigan defensive tackle Ali Saad, who made 141 tackles and 22 for a loss in his preps career.
Georgia safety Michael Dixon, three-time All-Region honoree with 47 tackles, three interceptions with two pick sixes and six pass breakups.
In-state Orono product Danny Striggow, a defensive end with wrestling talent who was an all-state selection for his 46 tackles with eight for a loss this season.
Kansas running back Ky Thomas, the Gatorade Athlete of the Year in his state this season who has accumulated 7,703 rushing yards and 95 touchdowns in his preps career.
Local Anoka linebacker Cody Lindenberg, someone who has local recruiting analysts excited.
Wisconsin linebacker Lucas Finnessy, a a two-time Wisconsin Football Coaches Association All-State Team selection that scored touchdowns on offense, defense and special teams in high school.
Indiana offensive tackle Martes Lewis, a two-time all-state selection who was also a sectional champion and state qualifier in shot put.
Texas all-district safety Abner Dubar, who made 105 career tackles, three forced fumbles, two fumble recovers and six pass break-ups.
Kansas offensive tackle Aireontae Ersery, also a skilled shot put, discus and javelin thrower.
Missouri defensive end Jalen Logan-Redding, another all-state selection who contributed 140 tackles and 18 sacks in his last two high school seasons.
Tennessee tight end Austin Henderson and his 21 receptions for 232 yards in a season that went all the way to the state semifinals.
Kansas receiver Daniel Jackson, who led his high school team to sixth-consecutive state title with 74 receptions for 1,511 yards and 27 touchdowns this season.
Local Rosemount receiver Jonathan Mann, who averaged 23 yards per catch with eight touchdowns as an all-state performer this season.
Class headliner Itayvion Brown, the four-star Missouri linebacker, a state champion with 105 tackles and sevens sacks as a senior.
Preferred walk-on Wyatt Schroeder, a tight end out of St. Francis.
Preferred walk-on kicker Dragan Kesich from Wisconsin.

Together already: Gophers 2020 football recruits have started their bonding
Gophers' 2020 recruiting class features 12 who formed, kept bond.
By Megan Ryan Star Tribune DECEMBER 18, 2019 — 11:58AM

Several Gophers football recruits were on the way back from the Mall of America, or maybe it was U.S. Bank Stadium, when one finally spoke up and asked the question on everyone’s mind.

“Are you guys going here? Because this is the best place I’ve ever been. We have to go here.”

Gage Keys, a defensive end from Ohio, heard that and immediately answered, “Yeah, I’m coming here, too.”

That was six months ago, when 12 players committed to play for the Gophers after their “Summer Splash” official visit weekend. Since then, the 2020 class has bonded through Twitter and a group chat, reuniting for the Wisconsin game to experience “College GameDay” and the Gophers’ shot at winning the Big Ten West.

Now, 26 Gophers commits will sign their national letters of intent Wednesday, the start of a three-day early signing period when most football recruits make their decision. Several of them will then become early enrollees, joining the Gophers for January winter workouts and spring ball.

This Gophers class ranks 32nd nationally and eighth in the Big Ten, according to 247Sports.com. That’s a 13-spot rise nationally, two spots up in the conference, from last season. It’s Minnesota’s highest national ranking since the 2008 class, which was 26th in the country and fifth in the Big Ten.

A 10-2 season surprised many, but Keys said the recruits knew this was possible because they saw what the program was like in the summer. And they watched the team’s national perception change, from cringing about close nonconference calls to marveling at the top-five win against Penn State.

“I know a few younger recruits at some schools near me are hitting me up like, ‘Have the coaches said anything to you about me? I’m trying to come,’ ” Keys said. He told them, “It’s a special place, and you need to take that visit for sure. It’s worth the drive.”

Josh Helmholdt, a Midwest recruiting analyst for Rivals, said since the Gophers filled most of their 2020 spots in June, their good season this year won’t have much of an impact on the current class. But 2021 should see a bump.

“It’s easy when you have something to sell in recruiting,” Helmholdt said. “And P.J. [Fleck] and his staff have a lot to sell coming off of this 2019 season.”

The Gophers have received some recent commitments, though, including Florida receiver Douglas Emilien. Gophers recruiting analyst Ryan Burns from 247Sports.com said the Gophers’ standout season “definitively” impacted Emilien’s choice.

“He’s a kid that maybe wasn’t as interested in Minnesota back when the Gophers wanted him in the spring and summer,” Burns said. “But then when you win 10 games and then you also have the No. 1 and No. 2 receiver in the Big Ten, it turns out receivers, especially, are going to be much more interested than they may have been previously. Like you don’t get that kid who … had offers from LSU among other places if you don’t have a great season.”

Burns said the Gophers’ class is on the same tier as Wisconsin and Iowa, which the program will need to sustain if it wants to compete for Big Ten West titles every year. But the team will also need sustained success after this one-year jump to attract even better prospects.

The 2020 class has one real head-turner in four-star Missouri linebacker Itayvion Brown and others with high potential, including Kansas running back Ky Thomas, fast Ohio athlete Miles Fleming, local Anoka linebacker Cody Lindenberg and Keys.

These players talk almost every day via text. They commiserated about the Wisconsin loss together, already vowing they won’t be the senior class crying on senior day for the lost Axe. Fleck told them their responsibility when they join the team is to uphold the standard set this year, when the team won seven Big Ten games for the first time.

Signing Wednesday will be the first step in a long journey. But this class is already ahead of the game in one aspect: their bond with one another.

“The craziest thing was, it felt like we had been together the past four years when we had just met,” Keys said of meeting many of his future teammates in June. “They’re all really cool guys, and we got along really well.”

We just needed to win against Iowa or Wisconsin to make this season truly awesome. I wonder if that would have made the recruiting that much better.

Meet ‘Tank,’ the highest-rated player in the Gophers’ 2020 recruiting class

By ANDY GREDER | agreder@pioneerpress.com | Pioneer Press
PUBLISHED: December 19, 2019 at 11:29 am | UPDATED: December 19, 2019 at 11:30 am

Life was moving fast for Itayvion Brown on Wednesday, with a loud bustle of activity heard in the background of 18-year-old’s iPhone.

The St. Louis, Mo., linebacker had just finished a signing-day ceremony with two teammates at Lutheran North High School. He donned a gold Gophers hat and matching long-sleeve T-shirt, which, given his long wingspan, didn’t quite extend to the bottom of his wrists.

As Brown exited the event, his father, Concepion, was by his side, and his mother, Kawanda, was off to the car. Other students were talking in the distance, and a call’s connection to Brown was breaking up, contributing to the muddle.

“It was mind-blowing,” Brown said of the scene. “It was life-changing.”

A four-star recruit based on 247sports.com’s composite rankings, Brown is the highest-rated signee in the Gophers’ 2020 recruiting class. He considered the fifth-best recruit out of talent-rich Missouri in this cycle.

At 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, Brown will arrive in Minnesota this summer with the perfect football nickname for a hard-hitter: “Tank.”

“If he hits you now, you’d feel like a tank hit you,” Lutheran North coach Carl Reed told the Pioneer Press.

Gophers coach P.J. Fleck promoted the nickname during Wednesday night’s Signing Day Social at TCF Bank Stadium, putting it in the same context as a moniker given to arguably the best Gopher of all-time.

“If you are a football player and your nickname is ‘Tank,’ it’s like (Bronislaw) ‘Bronko’ Nagurski. Bronko!” Fleck exclaimed. “It’s just one of those names that just fits.”

Brown added simply: “That’s a name for a hard individual.”

But Brown’s nickname didn’t originate from playing the game like an instrument of war. His father dished it out when Itayvion was younger and would gravitate to his favorite girl cousin, Tanka.

“When I started playing football, I was bigger than anybody, so it just kind of stuck,” Brown said.

Brown played two seasons on the varsity team for Lutheran North after transferring from nearby Jennings High School. He felt a move was necessary to escape the gun violence and drug issues that plague parts of his hometown.

“St. Louis is a brutal city to live in,” Brown said. “A lot of my family members and my friends, they chose the wrong lifestyle. Me growing up, I was in the middle of all that, I had to find a way out. I had to find a way to succeed.”

Brown, who has a twin sister, Itayvia, and four other siblings, said an uncle and two cousins died of gun violence and another cousin pass away due to a drug overdose.

“I just knew I had to make a change for my life,” Brown said. “I just knew that I was my own person and I made my own decisions. I just knew my decisions had to be the right ones.”

One decision was transferring to Lutheran North, which Reed calls “Scholarship High,” and the school’s track record in the smaller Class 2 backs it up.

In addition to Brown, the school’s signing ceremony featured fellow linebacker Antonio Doyle going to Texas A&M and defensive back Cameron Griffin headed off to Western Michigan.

Last year, the Gophers signed three-star defensive lineman D’Vion Harris from Lutheran North, while Missouri netted guard Jack Buford. In 2018, defensive end Ronnie Perkins signed with Oklahoma. This is just the top talent at the school, with other players headed off to smaller programs.

Brown couldn’t play varsity as a sophomore because of transfer rules, and that didn’t sit well with him. “It was a decision that I didn’t have any control, so I just had to make the best of it,” he said.

So Brown played for the junior varsity team, and that’s when Reed saw he “was going to be one of the best players in the country. … He was just so dominate on the scout team that I knew he was going to be a special guy.”

Lutheran North lost to the eventual state champion in the small-school state semifinals of both Brown’s sophomore and junior seasons. Before his senior season, they sought a change.

“We knew we had to do something different and we had to go out harder,” Brown said. “Every year we thought we were working hard and we had to work past tired. … We had to become close as a team and we had to get closer with our coaches and we had to become closer with our teachers. We had to, in every aspect, we had to put more into it.”

This quote, which touches on academics, has to be music to Fleck’s ears since he stresses his players must be “elite” in all aspects of their lives.

Lutheran North did get over the hump, winning a state championship this fall. Brown comes to Minnesota as one of six new Gophers to win a state title in high school.

When Fleck and running backs coach Kenni Burns, who recruits Missouri, went south for a recruiting visit last fall, they saw what “Tank” could bring to the U.

On Wednesday, Fleck compared Brown to outgoing senior Kamal Martin, who has a similar body type but came to the U with less experience at linebacker than Brown. Martin, a projected NFL draft pick who will skip the Outback Bowl, played quarterback at Burnsville.

“This man (Brown) did not come off the field … ever,” said Fleck, including playing on all special teams units. “He didn’t even go to the sideline. … He did everything, and he never got tired. He just ran around.”

Brown had 105 tackles and seven sacks as an outside linebacker within a 3-4 front, and he caught six touchdowns as a receiver/tight end in a run-heavy Wing-T offense.

“I talked to him after the game on the phone,” Fleck said Wednesday, “and (he said,) ‘I just wanted to make plays for you, Coach. I knew you were there and I wanted to make plays for you and Coach Burns. When you look at this young man, he’s long, strong, very athletic, and you can see from his film, he’s not afraid of contact.”
