Always room on a bandwagon. I never complain about bandwagon fans. People have lives and other interests and if they only occasionally get interested in a team because their doing well, there’s nothing wrong with that.

This is another reason why it was so good that the Gophers played probably their most entertaining game of the year (possibly a close second to Penn St. game) on a day when probably for many people it was the only Gopher game they watched all year. Gave them a good show. Something to get excited about.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Football (1/2/2020 7:24:32 AM)

It is really nice to have 3 good backs all year....Smith looked good also in this game but Ibrahaim was the freshest.

Almost if not over 500 yards of offense against that defense is impressive.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (1/2/2020 8:11:26 AM)

Great feeling this morning
We've got a pretty decent program, that is in good hands, and will probably even improve
Basking right now.
Not satisfied, not cocky, not sure, but basking at this point.
It feels good right now.
Lets be un-Minnesotan now, and let this propel us even further upward.
Rose Bowl has to happen in next year or two. At least.
Use the mo.

This has to help the recruiting; maybe get a few kids to turn after watching the game.

Your boys cap off an 11 win season by beating a blue blood program in the biggest bowl game they have played in almost 60 years, there is a lot to feel great about. As you said, bump it to the next level to where you expect to play big games at the end of every year like ... yuchh ... Wisconsin. Speaking of whom, did you guys like the nice Sconnie cheap shot on Herbert, 8 yards after he crossed the goal line?

It won't change the 2020 class, but it should give 2021 a nice boost.

Love how their stupidity was finally punished yesterday by refs
They get away with crap in the B10
It was fun to see them rattled. And eventually beaten.
Kept envisioning maroon and gold all over out there instead of that hideous red.
That's the next step.

Enjoyed PJs statement …. "you wanna become a blue blood? Beat a blue blood"
I like that blunt stuff he lays out
Its like stop talking, start doing

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (1/2/2020 8:48:36 AM)

Sometimes it works out

Program is embracing the current passing game style Yet can still pound the ball

Get a few more of those ath-uhletes every year

Twins embraced the long ball swinging era in 2019

Now they need pitchers

And like that Flecks needing speed on defense

I have more confidence he’ll get it done before the Twins

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (1/2/2020 8:48:55 AM)

Best part to me was … it was a close game only because of
the KO return
a blown coverage
a couple other miscues that can be corrected
For the most part, it was a physical ass-kicking
Playing your best on the biggest stage impressed me. Like we've all said …. keep it up please.

The kick off return could have been a bad turning point

But the Gophers kept moving the ball

It did show me they need more team speed
That was glaring on that play

Agree. I think we have neglected to point out how good the defense was. They really only gave up 14 points. The FG was after Morgan's int. gave Auburn the ball already in FG range. The D made damn sure Auburn wouldn't cash in with 7. The next TD was a KO return. In total Auburn ...

Rushed for a total of 56 yards on 26 carries for an average of 2.15
Passed for a total of 176 yards, of which 61 came on two plays. They averaged 6.8 yads per attempt / 4.8 outside of the 2 big completions.

The Gophers just physically beat the crap out Auburn on both sides of the ball for 60 minutes. They physically dominated players who are used to being the ones handing out the ass kickings. When you consider that Auburn was the most battle hardened team in the nation (5 games against top 13 teams) coming into the game, it's even more impressive.

It was a total ass-kicking with a deceptive final score.

One of my favorite moments was after the failed 4th down QB sneak (one of VERY few bad playcalls all game), it looked like Auburn was set to grab momentum. But our defense forced a 3 and out and then we scored a TD on the following possession.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Gopher Football (1/2/2020 11:12:21 AM)

I don't know if it was noticed how much the announcers were leaning Auburn's way most of the game.....

I disagree. They were singing Morgan's and Johnson's praises early and often. They stated many times at how impressed they were with how the Gopher line was man handling the Auburn D line. They also stated several times that this game was not a matter of Auburn unprepared to play, the Gophers were simply taking it to them.

The Gophers were dominating both offensively and defensively and it would have been characteristic for the team to have folded in the 4th quarter (BUT THEY DIDN"T)! That was what made the game and win so satisfying. FINALLY, a Minnesota team gets the job done. [sm=EMOTICHEERLEADER.gif]

This.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (1/2/2020 11:53:08 AM)

So in my Gopher fan days we've had 3 really great WR's. 2 were Johnson's. So, we have to face it fellas. We need more Johnson's. [:-]

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (1/2/2020 12:08:32 PM)

Go back to the Arsenal thread.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (1/2/2020 12:23:27 PM)

Nope. Too lonely.

Great win. I mentioned that I thought Fleck would have the boys up for it but their athleticism would eventually outdo us. I was wrong. Our physicality actually wore them down to where their great athletes could barely get off the turf.

I also have to be honest. Our D was shockingly good.

It makes one wonder what happened at Iowa and at home vs. Wisconsin. I think the Gophers had better play makers than either of those teams. They played too conservatively, aka, Mike Zimmer football, in both those efforts. Playing not to lose rarely works.

Iowa is good football team and tough place to win. They finished two spots ahead of us in the top 25. I'm sure there was also some emotional let down after the Penn State game. We also shot ourselves in the foot that game with some unforced mistakes and conservative play calling.
