Interim offensive coordinator Matt Simon. Consider what the wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator was able to accomplish against Auburn after getting the interim tag when Kirk Ciarrocca departed for Penn State a week ago. With Simon calling plays, the Gopher offense put up 31 points, 215 rushing yards, and 279 passing yards against a Tiger defense that came into the game allowing an average of 18.6 points, 115.5 rushing yards, and 208.4 passing yards per game. I don’t know if he’ll get the permanent promotion to offensive coordinator, but if the Outback Bowl was supposed to be his audition, I’d have to say he nailed it.

The Gopher defense. Minnesota’s offense lit up the scoreboard, but the defense took care of business on their side of the ball, as well. Joe Rossi’s unit stifled one of the best rushing attacks in the country, limiting the Tigers to 56 rushing yards, which is well below their season average of 211 rushing yards per game. And they were able to do so without starting linebacker Kamal Martin. The Gophers were also able to hold Auburn to 24 points and 176 passing yards, below their averages of 34 points per game and 210 passing yards per game. When you consider that one of the Tigers’ touchdowns came on special teams, the performance looks even more impressive.

Before the game yesterday, all we really asked in here of the boys and coaches was "lay it out there"
Nothing to lose
They did that

SHOULD Have done that vs Wiscy at home, but we outthought the situation
Were up 7-0 and instead of trusting ourselves, we punted at midfield.

If our coaches keep the thought process they used yesterday, I will support them to the bitter end.
I only get pissed at our leadership when it buys into being safe
WE are protecting NOTHING here

Same with Vikings Sunday
If they come out and get scared early, then F them.
It happened vs GB (when our season turned to shit)
Get the early turnover, miss a wide open guy in the flat, and then start playing for field goals
The first coaches to quit that shit will be the first ones to turn the tide here
Fleck is looking like the leader so far.

I think it is safe to say that Fleck is not a repeat of Basement Brew or Geezo Beezo Jim Wacker.

His enthusiasm was more than either of those two

And that’s probably what rubbed me the wrong way
Just seemed like another gimmick

It currently appears like there’s a plan

The whole 11-win effort snowballed after they found ways to win those non-conference nail biters

The team bought in and went from there

Nope. Too lonely.

Great win. I mentioned that I thought Fleck would have the boys up for it but their athleticism would eventually outdo us. I was wrong. Our physicality actually wore them down to where their great athletes could barely get off the turf.

I also have to be honest. Our D was shockingly good.

It makes one wonder what happened at Iowa and at home vs. Wisconsin. I think the Gophers had better play makers than either of those teams. They played too conservatively, aka, Mike Zimmer football, in both those efforts. Playing not to lose rarely works.

Iowa is good football team and tough place to win. They finished two spots ahead of us in the top 25. I'm sure there was also some emotional let down after the Penn State game. We also shot ourselves in the foot that game with some unforced mistakes and conservative play calling.

Conservative play calling = Playing not to lose IMO

#Gophers local Outback Bowl TV ratings: 18.1, & 13.7 w/ persons 25-54. Peak was 21.7 total households during 4th qtr. Audience, no surprise, grew pretty good as the game went on. Interest in MN is super high.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2020 8:10:20 AM)

What were the ratings for high school ages

Those ratings are good for ticket buyers got 2020 games for sure
Not sure how 25 year olds watching a lot and are interested will help recruiting

Gophers football to hire Mike Sanford as next offensive coordinator

By ANDY GREDER | agreder@pioneerpress.com | Pioneer Press
PUBLISHED: January 3, 2020 at 10:19 am | UPDATED: January 3, 2020 at 11:33 am

The Gophers football program is hiring Mike Sanford to be its next offensive coordinator, a source told the Pioneer Press on Friday morning.

Sanford replaces Kirk Ciarrrocca, who left Minnesota after three seasons to be the offensive coordinator at Penn State on Dec. 26, and for the Outback Bowl, receivers coach Matt Simon served as the interim coordinator in an impressive 31-24 win over No. 12 Auburn.

Minnesota then returned home be one of 23 programs with a coordinator vacancy at the end of this week, and head coach P.J. Fleck said in Tampa., Fla, that the search would ramp up when back in Minneapolis.

Sanford also will serve as quarterbacks coach, the source said, while Simon will be promoted to a co-offensive coordinator role and maintain his job as receivers coach.

Sanford was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Utah State last season. At age 36, he became the youngest head coach in FBS in 2017 at Western Kentucky, following Jeff Brohm, and Sanford took them to the Cure Bowl as a first-year coach but was fired after a 3-9 season in 2018.

Sanford, who played quarterback at Boise State from 2000-04, was the offensive coordinator at Notre Dame in 2015-16. The Fighting Irish averaged 34 points and 466 yards of total offense in a 10-3 season that ended in a loss to Ohio State in the Fiesta Bowl.

Kizer worked with quarterback DeShone Kizer, who had 272 total yards of offense per game, the highest average in Fighting Irish history, but in 2016, Notre Dame finished 4-8.

Sanford first a coordinator at at his alma mater in 2014 and from 2011-13, he was an position coach and recruiting coordinator under Jim Harbaugh at Stanford.

Yahoo Sports, which first reported the hire, noted Sanford has a “longstanding relationship” with Minnesota head coach P.J. Fleck.

An Mlive.com article in 2016 talked about Fleck and Sanford’s relationship, which included Sanford visiting Fleck when he was the head coach at Western Michigan.

“I think the one thing that I really like about guys like P.J. Fleck, like Jim Harbaugh, is they’re going to be a head coach and lead in their own personality and the same holds true here with Coach (Brian) Kelly,” said Sanford when he was Notre Dame’s OF. “The guys who are really good head coaches are typically the ones that are really authentic to who they are.

“When you see things like (slogans and creative videos) with Coach Fleck, that’s who he is. He’s an unbelievably energetic, creative mind that’s not too removed from the players in terms of age, so he’s not going pretend like he’s been coaching for 45 years and listens to Motown singles. He definitely is a lot closer in age to those guys. I appreciate it. Of course, in my own way I try to coach to who I am as well.”

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2020 11:46:32 AM)

So, Simon will stay on as co offensive coordinator and WR coach.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2020 1:55:40 PM)

Probably just me, but I woulda rolled Simon right into the job

Just put up 31 pts vs the best GD defense in the history of the world? Come on!

He called the plays out of a scheme and game plan that Ciarrocca developed. There is also the recruiting aspect of the job. Simon was basically promoted to keep him from leaving for an NFL WR coaching job.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2020 2:10:05 PM)

… and it worked great.
…. and he probably would have stayed if he had been given the OC job.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2020 2:12:06 PM)

I'm sure he would have. Apparently Fleck wasn't comfortable with him in that role.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2020 2:15:42 PM)

Just sayin
I liked what I saw Wednesday [:D]

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2020 2:16:54 PM)

Me too. Except the Morgan keeper on 4th down and the goal line run calls.

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2020 2:19:05 PM)

Auburn jumped the very first slant route we ran
SOMEONE adjusted pretty damn well

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2020 2:19:30 PM)

Yeah, but we finally THREW a ball out of the Wildcat! [:-]

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (1/3/2020 2:21:56 PM)

Played and ran some of Boise State’s high octane years on the blue turf

He apparently is high energy as well

Simon leaves for a high paying job in a year.

You mean on the first interception? That was all on Morgan. The defender didn't jump the route, he was already there waiting before Morgan even threw it. Honestly, I couldn't believe he didn't see him.

I'm confused. Did Simon leave? A quick internet search just came up with him being promoted at the U.
