Gophers athletic director Joel Maturi said Sunday that football coach Tim Brewster has earned and will get a contract extension. The two have already had talks and those negotiations should pick up steam after Thursday's Insight Bowl game against Iowa State in Tempe, Ariz.

"We need some stability," Maturi said. We've proven that just changing coaches at Minnesota isn't the answer. We need stability. I'm excited about the recuits that are here and those who are coming and coach Brewster deserves the right to coach those recruits."

I'm going to go probably against popular opinion here and say I agree with Maturi's move.

Now is not the time to switch coaches.  They've had good recruiting, which was supposedly Brewster's strong point.  Those recruits will start to hit their stride next year and we need some continuity, not yet another regime change.

For those who paid attention, this was not just your father's 6-6 minor bowl game Gopher's season.  They were on the brink of being pretty good.  Sure they had inconsistencies, breakdowns.  But even still they persevered and were a few breaks away from adding at least a couple more wins over good teams. 

They took another step forward even if the record doesn't show it.  I'm not one of those who gives Brewster a free pass for his first season, believe me.  But what's done is done.  The 1-11 season is water under the bridge.  They've been on the right course since then, and there is no reason to change right now.  The program needs stability.

I would be totally fine with Brewster staying on if it meant getting a real OC in.  Sadly, I don't see that happening and if it does it'll be another complete system change.

We are at the point now where a couple of key recruits have switched their commitments from the Gophers to other schools. If the Gophers continue to suck ass on the field Brewster's alleged prowess as a recruiter will mean less and less as the top kids don't commit to teams that suck year after year. Brew has 2 years left on his original contract. There is no reason to extend him before next season. Just a plain bad move by Maturi IMO.

To be fair, we don't know the reason they switched. We have seen it go the other way also

I'm not a big fan of our OC, but maybe it is time to stop switching every year so the offense can get used to the coach and his system. It hsa to very difficult on players to learn new systems every year

It made sense to extend his contract. 

College football coaching is a little different than pro.  It's at least 75% about the recruiting, in my opinion.  you can be the best field general with the best assistants and the best system, but if you don't have the horses you're not going to win consistently. 

To have a lame duck coach with a year or two left on his contract leaves a cloud of uncertainty over the program and affects recruiting.  Guys want to know they will be playing for the same coach for 4 years.

You can want Brewster fired.  That's fine.  But once the decision is made to keep him, give him an extension.  To do the in-between and let him play out his contract with no future assurances makes no sense.  Either commit to him or cut him loose.  Otherwise the program gets hurt.

If anything, they're learning. In the past, the 'Minnesota way' at least for Gopher football would have been the half-assed approach.  Now they are being decisive, and doing it with conviction.  You have to give them credit for that even if you don't agree with the desicions.

Soon enough, kids will be shying away from such programs. The salesman won't have much luck if they don't win a lot.

Agreed. But I think they are on track to win.  Just my opinion.  People talk about them like they were so horrible this year.  They were pretty good.  And will continue to improve next year.

He had them last year and then, for some reason unknown to me, got rid of them for this current (crap) bunch.

Brewster had one of the best and proven O.C's in college football in Mike Dunbar. Top rated offensive recruits like Marquis Gray came to the Gophers to play in his system. When an O line consisting of 3 freshman and 1 sophomore proved to be over matched thus making the offense stagnant, Brewster forced out one of the most proven offensive coaches in the land for Jed Clampett. Roof was a different story. He left for like 3 times what he was making here. This underscores another problem. The U doesn't budget for a top flight staff.

The reason for my disgust with the coaching is showing again .... I really believe we have some PLAYERS.
We haven't always. But right now, imo, we do.
The D front 7 are all seniors. (ouch) We simply should have had a much better season.

I liked the play where Gray had a ton of time and found the receiver. Teams are so used to him running,they held back and thought he was going to run.

Which shows how predictable MN is on offense.

Even with the few good throws, Weber still tosses some incredibly lousy ones.

How can he still be the starting QB? It's amazing to me.
