Don't kid yourself. The Gophers have lost some 4 stars as well.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE: Gopher Football (1/23/2010 12:30:16 AM)

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Minnesota has hired Detroit Lions quarterbacks coach Jeff Horton to be its third offensive coordinator in three years.

Horton replaces Jedd Fisch, who left after just one season to be the quarterbacks coach for the Seattle Seahawks. And he has plenty of work to do. The Gophers finished last in the Big Ten in total yards, points per game and touchdowns scored.

Horton started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Minnesota in 1984. He has 22 years of experience in the college ranks. He was a head coach at UNLV and Nevada and also served as quarterbacks coach at Wisconsin from 1999-2005.

Coach Tim Brewster says Horton’s experience and teaching ability made him an attractive candidate.

Hmmm, Lions QB coach.
Impressive resume'.
Because, when I think high-powered offensive performance, I think Detroit Lions.
Especially their QB play.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (1/23/2010 9:33:51 AM)

They did have that one guy, back in like 84 or so who had a decent season.  I can understand Brewsters line of approach.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (1/29/2010 5:38:06 PM)

2 year extension for Brewster.

Lots of fan cheering in here, i see. [:@]

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (2/3/2010 9:33:06 AM)

Todays paper has a list of the players that are suppose to sign with the Gophers. Nothing higher then a 3 star and yet I like the size they are getting. Report is that they are in the top 50. I would like to be in the top 25

Is Henderson the only possible surprise left out there for the Gophers

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (2/3/2010 10:10:04 AM)

Why would Henderson want to play for a low-profile program?

When OSU and USC come calling, the Gophers are an after-thought.

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (2/3/2010 10:10:10 AM)

I don't know Henderson's personality, but I hope he is the type that would like to be the big fish in a smaller pond. If you go to a place like USC or Ohio State - you're just one of many, and while the team itself is rated highly - your own contribution would be downplayed.

If he stayed in Minnesota - he could quickly become THE guy that gets a ton of credit for turning the program around. His personal contribution would stand out and he'd get all the headlines.

It just depends on his personality and what is more important to him. Crossing my fingers that he wants to be the guy that helps the hometown team get back on the map.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (2/3/2010 10:41:52 AM)

Jim, I have seen rivals rankings that have the Gophers with a pair of 4 star recruits. Gjere and Lamont Edwards both have that ranking. There is supposedly a stud WR recruit that is expected to decommit from Ohio State and possibly go with the Gophers.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (2/3/2010 1:20:57 PM)

Just got back from the dentist and expected to see new information on signing day[:@]

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (2/3/2010 3:31:25 PM)

This is the list on the U/M site

http://www.gophersports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=8400&ATCLID=204878638

Coach Doofus had a press conference at 3

I guess that's showing confidence he'll land Henderson. Have the recruit conference before he announces. [:o]

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (2/3/2010 4:38:36 PM)

Henderson picks USC

At least Brewster will get to watch him LIVE when SoCal pounds the crap outta the Gophs  [&o]

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (2/3/2010 5:00:35 PM)

2 - 4 stars
17 - 3 stars
4 - 2 stars

The very definition of mediocrity. Good job Coach Brew aka "Super Recruiter".

Jake Carlson -> RE: Gopher Football (2/3/2010 5:34:04 PM)

Wow, that extension sure helped lock up some nice prime recruits!!?! Well done, Maturi! All those claims of Brewster being a recruiting whiz are about as laughable as the claims that Brad Childress is an offensive genius and quarterback guru!?!

Very laughable.

They're getting outrecruited by North Carolina, that perennial FB power house.

CAL, who has long been a doormat, has a good year this year and has a top 20 class.

Boston College
Maryland
Kentucky
Baylor
NC State
Az
Az State
GA Tech
Mich State

all with better recruiting classes.

Yeah, Brew is a real winner. SOOOO glad he's around for a couple more years, minimum. [:o]

Jake Carlson -> RE: Gopher Football (2/3/2010 9:32:23 PM)

Things have gotten downright embarrassing with Brewster at the helm!!!

http://recruiting.scout.com/a.z?s=73&p=9&c=14&view=2&yr=2010

Dead last in the conference!!! Yeah, that is some great recruiter you hired there, Maturi!!!

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (2/4/2010 8:35:27 AM)

Rivals gave the Gophers a better rating. #6 in the Big Ten, #50 nationally. As I said, the definition of mediocrity.

Brewster is going to show that he can do a better job of coaching the players he has or he will be gone after next year.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (2/4/2010 12:21:48 PM)

In an attempt to mitigate some of the negativity over this class, let’s break down a few things:

Needs addressed in a big way:

OL- Definitely got bigger
Jimmy Gjere is not Henderson, but he is a big time OT recruit. I predict he will move right into a starting spot.

Johnathan Ragoo is a 340 lb wall of beef at guard.

Matt Eggen is a 295 lb 3 star

RB – Finally got a 4 star that has no academic problems and who hasn’t been shot.

Lamont Edwards is considered at least as good a RB prospect coming out of high school as MB III. He is a big, fast and powerful runner who could easily take over the #1 RB slot from game 1. He is a great fit for the power running scheme that Brewster has tried to employ despite the lack of a power RB.

Donnell Kirkwood could also compete for significant carries right away. He is smaller than Edwards, but compact and very powerful. Kind of like a bowling ball between the tackles.

DL

Sean Ferguson is a 3 star, 6’6” 303 lb horse that provides some badly needed size on the D-Line.

In general:

Wisconsin has been very competitive for many years without bringing in elite recruiting classes. A butt load of 3 star players can win a lot of games if they fit the system for which they are recruited and if they are well coached. There are very few Mason remnants left. It’s time for Brew and his staff to show that can make these kids better.

That's a hell of a lot of competition in college basketball

I will admit you put a nice positive twist on a negative period in Gopher football. Hopefully, some of these guys can have a great impact early and fill holes. That said, here's to hoping that your Wisconsin plan works when the "system" changes every year and they are not as well coached!!!

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (2/4/2010 3:10:57 PM)

Brewster did end up with 2 of the top 3 in the state

TJ does have it right with WI. They usually have only 1 (or 2 if it's a great year) four star recruits. They get great guys they can coach up to play higher than their initial star ranking. BB may get a lot of heat for his personality, but he has surrounded himself with a really great staff, that's been the key to their success. The fact that they are projected as a borderline top 10 team to start next season speaks volumnes about the coaching staff given how unheralded their recruiting classes are.

If Brewster would just stick to an offensive philosophy for more than a day and not change DCs every season, his recruiting would start showing results on the field.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (2/5/2010 10:35:07 AM)

I see Henderson was smart and only gave USC a verbal and will wait to see what happens with the NCAA investigation of the school over Bush and Mayo infractions. I think more of the recruits should have done the same

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Football (2/5/2010 10:36:30 AM)

Any idea of the timeline for that NCAA investigation? When are we expecting some kind of finding?
