It's just flat-out wrong that I'm unable to watch Gophers football games in the state of Minnesota.
It's just flat-out wrong that I'm unable to watch Gophers football games in the state of Minnesota.
Do you get ESPN Classic? It's on there. In every other week, the 2:30 game on ABC the regional game has been a Big 10 game. Today, there is a Big 10 mgame starting at that time, but they put Nebraska v Texas on. Sheer Bull SHit if you ask me. I get the game, but not in HD

Wow I knew the defense was really bad, but the Strib notes today that the defense is dead last in Div I ...119 of 119 in defensive yardage ranking. Not only that but they're on pace to be the worst of any team since 1996! I knew it would be a struggle this year but how did it come to this? Dead last, and worst in the NCAA 11 years. I can't recall ever being dead last at anything. There's always a few dregs at the bottom. Not this time. The dregs 'r us.

Mr. Ed -> RE:Gopher Football (11/2/2007 3:45:42 PM)

How bad/empty did Mason leave the cupboard...would it have been this bad defensively anyway? Hard to say....

Matt Dahl -> RE:Gopher Football (11/2/2007 4:11:27 PM)

This defense is not that bad. As Brewster pointed out, they are improving every game. And now that he's benched the seniors for the young guys, I expect to see even more improvement. I expect a Top 100 defense by the end of the year, and next year I expect a Top 40 defense. These guys have that much potential.

So far, in one half, the D has allowed the Illini 390 yds and 31 pts. On HomeComing. Just no horses on that side of the ball. Scratch that, 34 pts and 434 yds allowed. That's awful. Illini averaging 12 yds per play in the first half. Overr 600 yds allowed now, with 10 minutes left. Just cannot even slow down the run. Mr Brewster. don't worry about the rest of the season, get to the state playoff games and get yourself some corn-fed big boys to build up your lines. Keep going after speed to play behind them, but please, get some big boys who can block and tackle up front.

Jim Frenette -> RE:Gopher Football (11/4/2007 4:38:02 PM)

I'm beginning to think this is more then mediocre players. Listening on the radio they describe the runs through huge holes and receivers wide open. I'm thinking the coaches have to take some blame for not putting the players in the right positions to stop these holes. Opposing teams hardly ever punt against the Gophers.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE:Gopher Football (11/6/2007 5:07:33 AM)

Oh-oh. It's starting .... Holy Angels defensive end Brendan Kelly has withdrawn his commitment from Minnesota and will explore other options. Kelly, a three-star commit, is apparently looking hard at Wisconsin, among other schools. He took an official visit to Wisconsin several weeks ago and is expected to attend the Badgers home game against Michigan on Saturday. "I really appreciate the offer, but when it comes down to it, I think you have to pick the school where you're most comfortable at, because you're going to be there four or five years," Kelly said. "After I thought about it, I just thought that Minnesota was not the best fit for me." Kelly said the Gophers' 1-9 record was not a big factor in his decision to decommit. His decommitment is another blow to the Gophers' instate recruiting efforts under coach Tim Brewster. Minnesota has received a verbal commitment from only one of the state's top five recruits, Champlin Park linebacker Sam Maresh. Cretin-Derham Hall wide receiver Michael Floyd has committed to Notre Dame, and his teammate, offensive lineman Joe Schafer, has said yes to Wisconsin. Eden Prairie defensive end Willie Mobley visited Ohio State this past weekend but has not committed to any school yet. Chip Scoggins

While I am an Illinois alum and grew up in central IL, I do root for the Gophers as my adopted home team (except when they play the aforementioned Illini). What I observed is that the defense is about what it was under Mason, someone already noted the Michigan collapse a couple years ago. However, the biggest change is on offense, this is a totally new system, so I expect it to be worse. There was an article in the Strib comparing Zook and Brewster, but it wasn't really fair because it didn't take that change in system into account. I think it was Reusse, noting that the shotgun spread the Gophers were running couldn't run time off the clock and keep Illinois off the field. Guess what, Illinois runs a shotgun spread too. I would expect that next year will show improvment, but I know the frustration.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE:Gopher Football (11/10/2007 6:30:48 PM)

Sadly, the only way Floyd won't be staying in Iowa today, is if they forget to take him down there. I'd say .... do that. It'd be great, Iowa comes storming across the field, rips open the case, and ..... nothing. Let's heat this rivalry up again. That would do it, I'm pretty sure. Just an idea. :)

Mr. Ed -> RE:Gopher Football (11/13/2007 9:09:51 PM)

http://www.startribune.com/gophers/story/1547123.html The Gophers hope to be in their new 50,000-seat football stadium by 2009, and they took a take a step toward that today with a $2.5 million sponsorship from Dairy Queen. The University of Minnesota announced that the TCF Bank Stadium’s club room will be called the Dairy Queen Stadium Club. Last month, a $12.5 million gift to the university was announced by the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community that included $10 million for the $288 million stadium If you build it...sponsors will come. Should call it the Blizzard Room.

TJSweens -> RE:Gopher Football (11/15/2007 8:48:12 PM)

Spencer Reeves a 3 star LB from Dallas committed to the Gophers.

Matt Dahl -> RE:Gopher Football (11/17/2007 10:45:37 PM)

Why is it I can watch Florida A&M vs. Bethune-Cookman on TV, but can't watch the Gophers vs. Wisconsin? Somebody please explain this to me!

Jim Frenette -> RE:Gopher Football (11/18/2007 12:21:55 AM)
Why is it I can watch Florida A&M vs. Bethune-Cookman on TV, but can't watch the Gophers vs. Wisconsin? Somebody please explain this to me!
Can't do it buddy. That's like every Sat, the 2:30 game on ABC is a big ten game untill the Gophers played Ohio St and they put that game on ESPN Classic and a Big 12 on ABC. I'm listening though. Team was playing well until the last 4 minutes of the half. Still have the lead and get the ball to start the 2nd half.

Jim Frenette -> RE:Gopher Football (11/26/2007 2:51:47 AM)

Willie Mobley says only two schools in contention for his services now, Minnesota & Ohio St. After watching him score a TD Friday, I think Brewster should tell he could be their Mike Vrabel and line up at TE in short yardage at the goal line. :D

Lynn G. -> RE:Gopher Football (11/26/2007 4:28:16 AM)

Someone on local news hinted that Mobley might have trouble meeting most school's academic standards. I think that's kind of rotten reporting, talking about a high school kid's academic situation, but that's what I heard. I admit I heard it third hand, so I can't quote the guy exactly.

Other media sources have said Mobley will have absolutely no problem meeting academic requirements.

Lynn G. -> RE:Gopher Football (11/26/2007 4:50:17 PM)

I hope that's correct Tim. Since I heard it third party - I didn't even know who said it, but it sounded like someone jumping the gun.

Jeff Jesser -> RE:Gopher Football (11/26/2007 7:39:25 PM)

If Sid said that there's a good chance the kids a Rhodes Scholar.

Lynn G. -> RE:Gopher Football (11/26/2007 9:00:50 PM)

So true Jeff. I shouldn't have even posted it in the first place since it was a shady remark to begin with.

TJSweens -> RE:Gopher Football (12/1/2007 12:21:06 AM)

@#%^&%#$@$ Willie Mobley commits to the Suckeyes. This was the local commitment Brewster needed. Hopefully he adds a couple more good recruits from outside the state.

Jim Frenette -> RE:Gopher Football (12/1/2007 6:07:18 PM)

The top two in the state still leave. Not a good start, but after they watched the team this year I can understand their hesitation.

So.Mn.Fan -> RE:Gopher Football (12/2/2007 3:06:22 AM)
The top two in the state still leave. Not a good start, but after they watched the team this year I can understand their hesitation.
At this point, I go over to Eden Prarie, and offer scholarships to the entire team (that hasn't already committed elsewhere). They were a better team at the end of the year than the Gophs were. And I'm not really joking. :)

TJSweens -> RE:Gopher Football (12/7/2007 7:19:31 PM)

Brewster gets a commitment from Tramaine Brock, a safety from Mississippi Gulf Coast CC
