Its so pathetic, I'm not even mad anymore....

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (9/25/2010 10:22:39 PM)

Just when you think it couldn't get any more sickening.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (9/25/2010 10:26:22 PM)

The Goophers are making Span look like a lock to win the Heisman.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (9/25/2010 10:27:53 PM)

This is beyond pathetic. Brewster should be fired before the game is over.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (9/25/2010 10:34:40 PM)

Touchdown...woo hoo...whatever...

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (9/25/2010 10:54:51 PM)

September 1st, 2010:

Brewster enters his fourth season at the Gophers' helm Thursday night against Middle Tennessee State, insisting that Minnesota has taken enormous strides toward long-term competitiveness, that those lofty ambitions are more within reach than ever.

"We have improved every season, and we are better again this year," Brewster vowed earlier this month. "The doubters may not believe it, but this will be a successful season."

"The team we have on the field today ... is light years ahead of where we were three years ago. Light year." said Brewster.

"The team we have on the field today ... in just 4 years is as pathetic as the Jim Wacker era teams." said Brewster.

I fixed it for you.

Rob Jorgenson -> RE: Gopher Football (9/26/2010 8:52:26 AM)

Tim Brewster should be out of a job by tomorrow morning.  There is no way this clown should keep his job!  Jim Wacker is a better coach then he is.

At least the Wacker games were somewhat entertaining. They didn't play any defense, but they could put up 50 on any given week.

Jim Frenette -> RE: Gopher Football (9/26/2010 11:11:48 AM)

Time to stop blaming Weber for the loses as this team is showing it just can't play defense. Absolutely can't tackle and the line is pushed around they have holes a Mac truck could go through. They can also blame the play calling. They want to keep running but unable to even push the defense for a 1 foot gain. I know there is talent on the team, but no one to pull it out on the field. Need to revamp the complete coaching staff. They need to get an assistant from Urban Meyer or Nick Saban and start over

Karl H -> RE: Gopher Football (9/26/2010 9:02:19 PM)

With the non-conference schedule over, I'm giving out grades to the 1-3 Gophers as they head into Big-10 play.

QB (D)
This is all about Adam Weber, and I'm sure many people would have given a lower grade.  But Weber has some command of the offense, has completed 62% of his passes with 7 to 3 TD/INT ratio.  Also, he is usually under pressure for the pass rush.  That said, he simply has not gotten it done.  He has made few (if any) big plays, missed some easier throws, and some of the INT's were just awful.  Not good for for a 5th year Senior in his 4th year as a starter.

RB (D+)
Duane Bennett has regained his old form, averaging 4.7 yards per carry and nearly 100 yards per game.  Donnel Kirkwood does alright for a true FR.  DeLeon Eskridge is serviceable.  Together, this group is probably below average and produced few big plays.

FB (B-)
This goes to Jon Hoese.  I think he's done a good job of lead blocking and is a better runner than expected.  Also a team leader & captain.

WR (D)
Da'Jon McKnight has not cut it as a #1 receiver, Brandon Green has been the invisible man, Troy Stoudermire is on the verge of becoming a bust, and Hayo Carpenter IS a bust (and a 5 star bust at that).  Bryant Allen looks like a decent young WR, but should see the field more with these guys as his competition.  Something he has not done.  MarQueis Gray is the saving grace, keeping this group from receiving a lower grade.  He could be pretty good as a full time WR.

TE (D+)
Eric Lair, Tiree Eure, and Curtis Hughes simply have not been as good as recent year TE's like Jack Simmons and Nick Tow-Arnett.

OL (F)
This group has been absolutely dreadful in pass protection and spotty as run blockers.  Very disappointing for a unit which starts 3 Seniors and a Junior.  Ed Olson is the only bright spot as a Freshman left tackle.

Karl H -> RE: Gopher Football (9/26/2010 9:04:30 PM)

continued

DE (F)
Yes, this group is young...but that should not affect the pass rushing all that much.  Or should I say lack of.  In 4 games, they have combined for 1 sack.  The pressure is almost never there either.  That alone is killing this defense...and the team.

DT (C)
Brandon Kirksey has been decent for the most part, although maybe not the all conference player some predicted.  Jewhan Edwards usually holds his own as a space eater, though not always.  Together, they have a sack and 9 TFL's.  Much more productive than the DE's.

LB (D-)
This group should have a been a small dropoff from last years starters, but they're not even close.  Way too many missed tackles and missed assignments.  Most of the these players are Sophomores & Freshmen so they should only get better, but it has not been good so far.

DB (Incomplete)
I'm very generous with this grade as Kyle Theret and Kim Royston have missed a lot or all of the games so far.  However, Micheal Carter has gone from an all conference hopeful & possible NFL draft pick to a guy who lost his starting spot to a true freshman.  A monumental disappointment so far.  Ryan Collado has been as good or better than expected.  James Manuel has not lived up to the true freshman's preseason hype.  Christyn Lewis has been adequate and Brock Vereen is a true freshman.

Special Teams (D-)
Eric Ellestad is barely 55% on field goals.  He's been downright terrible this year.  Dan Orseske has ability, but pretty inconsistant so far.  The kickoff returns have had some nice moments, but that's about it for special teams.

Coaching (F)
Losses to South Dakota and Northern Illinois at home pretty much cement this grade.  I don't see how another argument can be made.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/27/2010 9:25:58 AM)

We will beat teams in the Big 10 this year, good teams.  The team is much better than previous and will continue to get better.  THIS IS A GOOD FOOTBALL TEAM.

I know all of this because Brewster said it per a Strib article this AM.  [&:]

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (9/27/2010 2:26:17 PM)

Bah, he hasn't been fired YET!?!

Shows that Maturi will have to go first.

David Levine -> RE: Gopher Football (9/27/2010 2:34:24 PM)

heh:

"The answer in college football is not [to] change the coach out all the time. That's easy -- change the coach, change everything," Brewster said. "That's not the answer. The answer is, make a commitment to be the best you can be at all levels. Add patience and understanding, and you'll be rewarded."

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/27/2010 3:30:56 PM)

Almost 50 years of taking abuse for being a fan of this program, and I can honestly say this is as low as I've been.
I have no strength left to fight this. They suck. Horribly. From top to bottom.
I love your strength, Karl ... please hang in there.
Loved the grades and they were spot on. When Adam Weber is your bright spot so far, this is where your team is.
Worst
Defense
Ever
And thats saying something.

How bad are they?

I didn't even check to see when they were playing Saturday. I found out Sunday morning they'd lost.

Am very apathetic at how pathetic they are.

DL/Sweens, you're right, he's working harder to not get fired than to coach.

it's his mess, but someone else is going to be cleaning it up, I hope.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Football (9/29/2010 6:04:23 AM)

At what point did this guy disconnect from reality:

Toward the end of last week’s loss, Tim Brewster consoled quarterback Adam Weber on the sideline while fans at TCF Bank Stadium called for the coach’s firing in the background. The image was fitting for the Gophers and the huge hole they’re in, because Brewster and Weber have felt the wrath of frustrated followers more than anyone else in the program over these last four years.
In spite of the external skepticism, though, they haven’t wavered in their insistence this team is better than it has looked.
“I understand the frustration of our fans, because my expectation was to be 4-0 at this point,” Brewster said Tuesday, his voice rising. “I with all my heart believe we should and could be 4-0.”

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Football (9/29/2010 6:31:14 AM)

Tim Brewster places his hands over both ears, and screams at the top of his lungs ...... "Lalalalalalalalalalalalalala I can't hear you".
The guy is delusional.
None of these are close losses.
They are ass-whippings. Fire him and bring him back to reality, please.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Gopher Football (9/29/2010 9:13:32 AM)

Yeap.  These havne't been losses where the ball just didn't bounce our way/end cliche.

These have been "you've been out talanted and coached" type of losses to the likes of South Dakota and Northern Illini.  And, to be honest and in full disclosure, we would have lost the opener if their stud QB wasn't out.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (9/29/2010 9:22:29 AM)

What aggrivates me the most is that the Gophers really are bigger, stronger, faster and more athletic than they have been in a long time. Brew just has no clue as to how to coach that talent. I really belive a legit D1 coach could have a hell of a year with this bunch.

I get what Brew is saying and actually agree except for the record.  USC should have and did beat us.  However, my "EXPECTATION" was to be 3-1 at this point.  We "SHOULD" be 3-1.....and "COULD" be 3-1.

If we had better coaching.

To me, those statements do nothing but validate his firing.

+1.  Although I don't think those programs have more talented players than us, just more talented coaches.

1000% agree

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Football (9/29/2010 3:26:13 PM)

A true moment of pride for Gopher Nation. Ranked #5 in ESPN's Bottom 10.
