Cris Carter Criticizes Deion Branch
Sat Dec 4, 2010

WEEI reports ESPN analyst Cris Carter, in an appearance on The Big Show on Friday, suggested that the New England Patriots traded WR Randy Moss at the perfect time. That said, he also insisted that the Patriots' offense is much less dynamic without Moss and offered a harsh assessment of current Patriots WR Deion Branch. Though he praised Branch as a "great route-runner," Carter also suggested that Branch is too frequently injured and often "disappears" in games. "The ceiling with Moss with their offense is a lot higher. … They can be really dynamic. Like frightening. Now, if they don’t play well offensively, they’ll lose, because they have a defense that doesn’t dominate the games," said Carter. "Deion disappears too much against regular corners. He disappears in the game. He’s made, like, three guest appearances since the Super Bowl. ... Look at his stats. Look at his game. He’s just a guy. You guys have to be real about it. Great players, they don’t get hurt as much as the other players. There’s a difference between great ones and good ones and average ones." As for Moss, with whom Carter has a close relationship dating to their time together in Minnesota, the ESPN analyst suggested that the ex-Patriots receiver regretted both his ill-timed rant about the Patriots after a Week 1 win, and that Moss wished that he had never left New England. "When they got Randy, they got the absolute best out of him. And when they got rid of Randy, they got rid of him at the right time," said Carter. "When he spoke out against them, he made a serious mistake. I know personally that Randy wishes he could have that back. ... He wishes he had never left New England. He definitely wanted out of Minnesota with HC Brad Childress because he didn’t really respect his offensive philosophy."

A combination of Moss slowing down considerably (aside from the TD vs Cromartie from Favre) and the Pats OLine being unable to sustain blocks for Moss to get down field have altered their offensive philosophy. There was too much on Moss' plate for him to be that dominant deep threat, thus there was too much emphasis on getting the ball to Moss when it wasn't going to be as effective in years past and I think the Patriots brass began coming to grips with this by December of last season. Now the Pats can pound with Green-Ellis, hit shorter quick receivers in stride and basically transform into the Pats of 2004, though Brady is better now than he was then. It has helped their OLine immensely. The Pats are the only team that can literally change their offensive philosophy in one half for the whole season, not including injuries of course. They did that on the Monday night game in Miami.

I do think Randy can be effective again though it doesn't look promising atm.

The Steelers and Ravens wouldn't even make the top 5 NFC teams. Did you watch them play last night?

Typical Raven/Steeler game, I know it's cliche but it was your usual knock down, drag him out fight. One thing I never understand when watching these teams, especially from the Ravens is why both teams are so scared to make plays against one another. The Ravens really could've pushed the ball down field more and used Rice out of the backfield. They just let the Steelers hang around, and Big Ben always makes them pay by games end, 7 straight wins against the Ravens for Ben.

You might say typical game between them

But the Steelers were also helpless against the Pats

The Ravens defense couldn't even make Matt Ryan take 1 minute to drive 80 yards with the game on the line.

I have seen at least 6 games for both of these teams and both are not what they used to be.

The Steelers trading Santonio Holmes was plain stupid. THe Ravens defense is old. Ed Reed is not what he used to be and Chris McAlister is long gone.

Their offenses aren't great. But I'm not sold on the Eagles/Giants doing a lot against those defenses either.

The Ravens defense is not that good. This is not the old Ravens

The Bills scored 34 on them in Baltimore

The Falcons beat them and put up 26 with Flacco moving at will on them in the 4th quarter

The Eagles will score on anyone and the Ravens won't

The Ravens played the 4th best team in the NFC and lost already

The Steelers are even worse. The Saints beat them by 10 points.

This is not a good year for the AFC

THe NFC's top teams are clearly better

Since their domination in SBs along with Colts, Pats and Steelers dominance their is a serious bias towards the AFC. Over the past 3-4 seasons the NFC has been the better conference. Add to that the NFC West does a serious disservice to the NFC.

djskillz -> RE: NFL News (12/7/2010 11:14:28 PM)

The Holmes trade wasn't about talent/on the field though, IMO. That was all about his off-field problems.

And I can't really blame them for it.

Falcons also got away with a clear offensive PI on the game-winning TD.

Then why didn't they trade Rapistberger?

No consistency

I agree. But just saying it wasn't about talent. Holmes clearly has a lot of talent.

Agreed

The NFC is much stronger at the top this year

Falcons
Bears
Packers
Eagles
Giants
Saints

versus

Patriots
Steelers
Ravens
Jets
Chiefs

Not a lot of people would take the Jets or Chiefs over any of the NFC 6

So 6 of the top 9 are from NFC

Big Ben has impressed me more as a player the last couple of years (don't like the person at all, obviously). But I still don't think he's an elite-level QB. Those defenses were huge helps.

And both Plaxico and Holmes have been huge for him. As has Wallace now.

Wallace doesn't come up with the big play as ofter in the clutch as those two. Plus, Hines Ward is much older and slower now.

The net result is the Steelers don't have a strong enough passing game to win another SB

And the Pats know how to smoke that defense

Big Ben without Holmes is average

Big Ben is too unique of a QB to be average. His ability to make plays when things breakdown are second to none, making him very difficult to game plan for. Holmes is a very good receiver and he's continuing to prove that but he by no means made Big Ben. Peyton, Brady, Rivers, Vick, Rodgers and perhaps Brees are the only QBs I would consider taking over him, and aside from Brady I wouldn't anyother QB if my team was down 4 with 2 minutes left.

John Childress -> RE: NFL News (12/8/2010 6:06:01 AM)

Excellent point Rob

I stand corrected

I should say the Steelers offense is ordinary without Holmes

Looks like the fans forgive Vick:

The league revealed today that Vick has 729,838 fan votes for the Pro Bowl, which puts him in first place among all players in the entire league.

He's almost 40,000 ahead of the #2 player.

Todd M -> RE: NFL News (12/8/2010 4:34:06 PM)

Forgive? IDK. Probably 3/4's of those votes came from the - they're just dogs...you eat meat don't you...Vick shouldn't have done time coterie.

Not confirmed yet though

Wade Phillips started a landslide!

Or, Jason Garrett winning started a landslide!

I knew this guy was a punk when they went like 4 - 0 or 5 - 0, and he was running across the field pumping his fists. No class IMO. I realized this guy had no idea how to win and what it meant.

Aaron Rodgers on Jim Romes Show yesterday.
What an arrogant, mouthy, rude bastard.
Guys totally full of himself.

Ok, can't keep a straight face.
Pisses me off ... he's one hell of a QB and unfortunately, also seems to be one hell of a nice guy.
Humble and appreciative of where he is at in life.
All you jerks in GB are very fortunate.
I'm almost looking forward to the day he's washed up, punch-drunk, full-of-himself, and weird ..... so we can get him. [:D]

He's got a little bit of Kiffin in him. Too young/brash/immature. And in over his head.

I felt the same way watching Peyton Manning interviewed the last few weeks

I wanted to say I can't stand him but he was a stand up guy

honest and likeable

John Childress -> RE: RE:NFL News (12/11/2010 10:46:55 AM)

No Asante Samuel for the Eagles

Looks like a big day for the Dallas passing attack

marty -> RE: RE:NFL News (12/12/2010 12:01:25 AM)

Don't you think Dallas will be heavy on the run, especially with Choice now coming on ?

I don't expect big days of passing from Kitna late in the season, it'll be harder with Bryant out, and Philly still brings plenty of heat on the QB.
