He should have 3 by now, but at least Trout finally got his first MVP. About damn time. Unanimous too, as it should be. What a hell of a start to a career. Ditto for Kershaw. A couple of the best starts to careers in the history of the game. Fun to watch.

The legal limit in the Dominican Republic is .05, so Taveras was driving with nearly six times the legal amount of alcohol in him.

The Diamondbacks have reached a deal to acquire starter Jeremy Hellickson from the Rays, the clubs announced. Outfielder Justin Williams and shortstop Andrew Velazquez — both prospects playing in the low minors — constitute the return for Tampa.

Strange mix of stars and non-stars on the MLB All-Star team in Japan. You have Puig, Longoria, Morneau, Altuve. But you also have Nunez, Capuano.........and Butera.

Giancarlo Stanton deal is apparently done: 13 years, $325M. But with an opt-out for him in 2019 or 2020. Largest in MLB history. Somewhere, Mark is enraged and tipping a waitress a nickel as if it was the 50's. [:D] Thoughts on this deal? I actually think it's pretty reasonable. He was probably going to make something like $12-15M this year in arbitration. And $20M+ in 2016 in arbitration. He's among the best players in baseball, isn't at his prime yet, the contract only takes him through age 37 and he's at a position where physical decline won't mean as much on defense. And the biggest point; an average annual salary of $25M/yr may look like chump change with TV deals going up around the sport in 5-6 years. On the whole, Trout and Stanton both very well may have settled for well below-market deals. Sports franchises are flush with cash these days.

It's absolutely the stupidest deal ever inked in Major League baseball. I don't care how good the player is, nobody deserves a deal longer than 5 years and even then they have to be special. Invariably when signing a guy to a contract of longer terms the team usuallly ends up regretting the deal (with very few exceptions). to handcuff your team for 13 years... and they have to realize that Stanton is coming off being beaned in the face. There's no telling how he will react to that beaning yet. He may end up being a mess and out of baseball except he'll keep donning the uniform for 12 more years to collect a paycheck.

Btw ... Stupid contract for Stanton, IMO. Simply no need for those type of albatross-inducing anchors that you will have to work around every season. No matter HOW good the guy is. No one can be THAT good or that valuable. It's still a team sport. Mauers contract has opened my eyes to this. I felt we were handcuffed and had to do it. Nope. Wouldn't have made us any worse, by letting him walk away. Imo

I think the big thing is age. Guys like Pujols, Miggy, Fielder, and yes, Mauer, were essentially paid for what they had already done. Kind of "make up" contracts for the peanuts they were making before relative to production, when you factor in age. Stanton and Trout are so young, they're kind of a different breed. You're not really paying for "massive downside" years with either of them. Hell, Stanton's actually may have just been for show if the opt-out is 2019 or 2020. Stanton would just be about 30 and would probably test the market and maybe get more. Meanwhile the Marlins can say "Look, we committed to $325" with perhaps no intention to actually do so. Obviously not saying a 13 year deal doesn't have immense risk; of course it does. But I can see both sides of it.

I've always loved Heyward, but thought he'd be better than this by now. Of course Cards fans think the same of Shelby Miller. I wonder if an extension is coming for Heyward as part of the deal. He's set to be a FA after this season. Braves fans have to be semi-sick because he is EXTREMELY popular among their fan base. Always tons of jersey sales, the "Say Hey Kid", etc.

Russell Martin back to the AL The Blue Jays have agreed to a deal with catcher Russell Martin, Peter Gammons reports (Twitter link). The contract is for five years (according to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman) and $82MM (via FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal).

That's what makes the Cardinals' organization so great. Ridiculous depth and good drafting over the last several years. Lose one of the best OF prospects in the game to a tragic death in the offseason? You regroup and trade for one of the better all-around OF'ers in the game, still young. And to do it you trade a guy (Shelby Miller) that any team would love to have. A 23 year old with tons of potential and very good success already. But they have so much depth, he's like a 4th or 5th starter for them right now. The fact that they only have to pay John Lackey $500K this year with that clause in this contract had to be a HUGE help in allowing this to happen as well. Ya, not jealous of the Cardinals' organization at all... Really, it's all good...

I don't know. I like Martin, and he's had a nice career. But he'll be 32 this season and his 2014 screams "Kurt Suzuki year". Of course the Jays have had success with hitters for years now (ahem, steroids, ahem). So maybe... I always thought he'd be the most overpaid guy on the market given the lack of catching options this year and it looks like that may well be the case. Now the Twins can say they extended Suzuki for a bargain.... [&o]
