Just purely as a baseball fan, I hope that's not too serious. Harvey's as fun as any pitcher to watch.

I see today they are whistling past the graveyard and hoping its the ST malady that affects so many.
They better hope so.

Love him or hate him, what ARod is doing is ridiculous. I don't like him; sort of hate him even. But with or without steroids, just like Bonds, he is one of the very best the sport has ever, ever had. Literally a good argument for top 5 ever. Unbelievable career. He and Bonds (until Trout...and Buxton [:D]) are the two best players I've seen in my lifetime.

Harper; crazy fun to watch. So happy for him that he's finally turning it on. I think Matt Williams is really good for him, especially given his Bonds' experience.

I think the Pirates are going to go on a big run at some point this year. Too much talent there to stay down for long.

Great post
I've come to almost like two of the most-hated sports people of all time, Bonds and Arod.
Probably for simply surviving.
They brought so much shame and controversy unto themselves, and I'm usually down on anyone like that, but for some reason I cant help but admire that they survived it all.
Cant agree more on the talent level they possess.
I'm not as convinced about Arod, but his numbers and a couple of his accomplishments are simply incredible.
But, imo ... we will maybe never see someone as naturally gifted (ironic to say, I know ...) as Bonds when it comes to bat control and the raw ability to put bat on ball.
The stretch he had during his blow-away-the-numbers years, when everyone hated him, didn't want to pitch to him, wouldn't pitch to him, game-planned around him, stalked him, despised him , etc ...
Yes, he brought it all on. But I am glad I got to watch someone do that.
He was Gretzkian. On a different plane(in). He went for weeks and months when, if he saw one good pitch a game, he hit it 400 feet. If he saw two, he hit them both 400 feet.
Freakish ability. Interesting to watch.
Harpers recent streak brings back that kind of rush. You wonder what he will do next, because he CAN.
Trout that type as well. Can be virtually unstoppable at times.
Whether it was steroid-induced or not, that type of confrontation was exciting and fun to watch, and rarely seen any more.

No kidding. I seriously doubt I'll ever see a hitter in my lifetime as locked in as Bonds was those years. Like you said, he might get 1 good pitch to hit in a game (if any) and he'd crush it. It was unbelievable to watch. Steroids or no.

May 25, 1935: Ruth hits his final HR

On this date 80 years ago, Babe Ruth went 4-for-4 with 3 HR for the Boston Braves, including the 714th and final home run. Alex Rodriguez is poised to pass Ruth on the all-time RBI list as he enters today's game tied with him at 1,992.

I was there, it was an awesome day.

(figured I'd get that out of the way, before one of you jackwagons asked ....)

But there's some math going on here that shouldn't be ignored.

Of the last 21 teams who held or were tied for the best record in baseball entering Memorial Day since 1995, 18, or 85.7 percent, ended up making the postseason. That's not bad. But only five of those clubs -- the 1998 Yankees, 2004 Red Sox, 2005 White Sox, 2007 Red Sox and 2014 Giants -- won the World Series.

Meanwhile, being in position to make the playoffs at this pivotal spot on the calendar isn't exactly a certainty, either. Teams leading their divisions or in place for Wild Card berths entering Memorial Day over the last 20 seasons have gone 103-for-173 (59.5 percent). Since the Wild Card era began in 1995, teams in or tied for first place at Memorial Day have a 51.2 percent chance of winning their division, according to Elias.

That leaves a lot of room for error on the part of the front-runners and rallying by the would-be also-rans.

Johnny Cueto will have his right elbow examined today, Joe Kay of the Associated Press tweets. Cueto missed his scheduled start on Sunday due to what manager Bryan Price described to reporters yesterday (including MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon) as “more than his usual elbow stiffness,” which prompted the Reds to be cautious with their ace, though Price felt Cueto probably could have pitched if absolutely necessary. “I don’t think it’s anything anybody is concerned with….If he needs a little extra time, he’s certainly earned it,” Price said. It should be noted that an elbow exam is a pretty routine step whenever a pitcher is experiencing any discomfort, so the fact that Cueto is undergoing an examination is not necessarily a bad sign. Still, Price said today that Cueto “hasn’t had total relief. I’d have thought by now, he would.” Any type of health issue for Cueto is worth monitoring given his status as both one of the top free agents of the 2015-16 offseason and potentially a big deadline trade chip for the struggling Reds.

Orioles reliever Brian Matusz was ejected from Saturday’s game with the Marlins for having a foreign substance on his arm, and now the southpaw has been suspended for eight games, Major League Baseball announced today. Matusz is appealing the suspension. As Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun notes, the suspension comes at an inopportune time for the O’s, as their pitching depth will already be tested due to a stretch of 14 games in 13 days (thanks to a double-header). Left-handed batters have only hit .185/.214/.296 this season against Matusz, who has a 3.18 ERA in 17 innings. The eight games matches the length of the suspension handed out to Brewers lefty Will Smith for a similar offense last week.

Nick Markakis HOFer? Only 3 players in the history of the game have hit 43 or more doubles in 4 consecutive seasons. Joe Medwick, Tris Speaker and Nick Markakis.

Philadelphia Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said that although fans may want the team to be aggressive before the July 31 trade deadline, they don't understand what goes into building a baseball team.

“They don’t understand the game,” Amaro said, according to CSN Philadelphia. "They don’t understand the process. There’s a process. And then they bitch and complain because we don’t have a plan. There’s a plan in place and we’re sticking with the plan. We can’t do what’s best for the fan. We have to do what’s best for the organization so the fan can reap the benefit of it later on. That’s the truth.”
