In the debut season for the Hillsboro (Ore.) Hops, everything’s a franchise first. The Arizona Diamondbacks’ new short-season affiliate opened the doors to Hillsboro Ballpark last week with a Major League Baseball authenticator on hand anticipating momentous memorabilia — at least by minor league standards. But after Diamondbacks prospect Jordan Parr smacked the first home run at the new park, the club and the authenticator ran into an unanticipated problem: A teenage fan with a shrewd understanding of his newfound leverage. The team offered the 15-year-old who caught the homer a signed bat and jersey in return for the ball, but he held out for more. By the end of the game, the teenager was demanding the bat, the jersey and season tickets for his entire family, at which point team officials called the kid’s bluff and let him keep the prized baseball.
