ORIGINAL: twinsfan Man, that was fun for a couple minutes after we got to within a goal and kept the pressure on. Hockey can be such a game of luck, am I right? Why did that goal go in for BSU, but the 10 other opportunities did not? Overall I'd say it was a very evenly played game. We outshot them by a few. Scoring opportunities were about equal. Both goaltenders played well. Driscoll made one truly magnificent save that kept us in it. Sat right behind Serratore. Very confused as to what a hockey coach does. Doesn't look like he does much at all? Both teams called timeouts. For the most part, it was just rest. The coaches didn't say anything to the players. Nothing about strategy. I saw the defensive coach use a whiteboard one time towards the end of the game. Serratore just stood there. I don't get that. I couldn't see the Mavs bench. Was curious to know if their coach is the same way. It's just the complete opposite of basketball, when coaches never stop talking, yelling, drawing up plays, you name it. Long season Coaches voices are in players ears from start to finish There's plenty of bench chatter, its just directed at the back of the players heads. Hockey coaching and strategy happens mostly in practice. Practices are repetitions of learned behavior. You get to games, you better have your poop in a group. The basic breakouts and forechecks of hockey are a lot more simplistic than average fans think they are. 99% of teams from the age of 10 up run the same basic plays and systems, the only thing that varies and changes, are player abilities and comprehension. D retrieve the pucks, forwards move into position for receiving passes and leaving the zone. Some D are more active, some are not. Some teams release forwards early to stretch defenses, some don't. You make all these plans in practice and before games and during period breaks. Hockey relies on player reactions to different types of pressure. Of course you can tweak things slightly in-game, but most is done by the guys you rely on to "get it" and react accordingly.
