Loved Zims presser ...

"walking off field with one of our defensive guys, he says "coach, love how the whole team won today""
Points to first questioner ...
"who was the guy?'
Zimmer ... "just a guy. Next question"

[:D][:D]

Everyone rows in this boat. Love it.
If you don't you are dead weight.

Best coach we've had in this state in a long....time, maybe ever, at least in my life time. I love the way he does things.

All I will say about our offense ... is

is it legal to get the ball to receivers in a way where they can actually add on YAC?
we've never done that
oh, and it is legal that we have receivers who WANT to add on YAC?
because for a long time we haven't had any
getting the ball to guys on crossing routes where they are MOVING is so huge
having guys who see the EZ and WANT to get there, is so huge

its not really rocket science or brain surgery

Glad they paid attention to what worked last week vs the Bears.

Because it's not that difficult.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (12/20/2015 9:24:00 PM)

Watching McKinnon/Asiata

And I still believe they can win without the dominant back.

And when they don't feel like running the human enema on first and second downs, the offense is much better.

Nice 38 hung on da Bearz

Black 47 -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (12/20/2015 9:54:52 PM)

Offense flowed better without Peterson and continually being 2nd and 12.

IMO we were just as eager to run on 1st when AD was out as we were when he was in. All to varying results.

Teddy on 3rd down was the difference.

SoMnFan -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (12/20/2015 10:04:09 PM)

aye
manageable third downs are HUGE for our boys. HUGE.

Hitting guys on the move in stride is huge.

Star Tribune

During his many years as an athlete and coach, air travel has generally agreed with Bud Grant, including his time with the Gophers, the old Minneapolis Lakers, the Philadelphia Eagles, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Vikings.

It took a duck-hunting trip in Canada to break that string of good luck.

The other day, while holding forth on his favorite post-NFL topic — the plight of North American ducks — the retired Vikings coach mentioned casually that he and a friend crash-landed a plane in Canada this fall while in pursuit of mallards and other fowl.

And yes, the hunting trip continued unabated — albeit in a U-Haul truck.

The incident occurred Oct. 17. Grant, who is 88, and his pilot pal, Jim Hanson, of Albert Lea, belly-flopped a twin-engine Beechcraft to a screeching stop a couple hours short of their destination in Kindersley, Saskatchewan.

On impact, the plane’s propellers shredded, showering sparks. Boom, Grant’s Labrador retriever, the third passenger aboard, seemed simultaneously afoot and aloft as the plane careened to a stop.

“The fire trucks came first,” Grant said. “Then the security people. They seemed to think we might be terrorists.”

A few hours earlier, Grant and Hanson had lifted off into a clear sky from Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prairie.

The two have traveled together to hunt for many years, from Texas to the far north, with Hanson, a member of the Minnesota Aviation Hall of Fame and the manager of the Albert Lea Airport, at the controls.

Hanson has piloted single-engine aircraft to nearly 80 countries. He first soloed at age 16, and owned a plane a year later, before he owned a car.

Parts shred like shrapnel

That day in October, as Grant and Hanson approached Regina, Sask., the sky was blue and the wind scant. The two planned to clear Canadian customs and take on fuel in Regina before flying on to Kindersley.

Approved to land, Hanson dropped the plane’s wheels, and with Grant, watched as a dashboard indicator confirmed “wheels down.”

Hanson drifted the sleek craft lower and lower … until at 100-miles-an-hour-plus, metal grated deafeningly against asphalt. Aircraft parts sprayed like shrapnel, rendering the sleek craft to junk in split seconds.

“The dashboard indicators failed,” Grant said. “Something in the landing gear was broken. The indicators said the wheels went down. But they didn’t.”

The twin Beech typically uses about 1,200 feet of airstrip when landing. Grant, Hanson and Boom stopped dead in about 300 feet.

But they weren’t dead.

And they weren’t on fire.

“The fire trucks were there in about a minute and a half,” Grant said. “We were still in the plane.”

If the aircraft had landed wheels-up on grass or dirt, it might have dug in and flipped over, imperiling Grant and Hanson.

Instead, on the main runway at Regina International Airport, the plane remained upright.

The October incident was not the first close call in Grant’s flying career.

Once, after playing in an all-star game in Canada, he was booked on a flight from Vancouver back to Winnipeg. Opting to return earlier in the day, he changed the flight. The original flight subsequently crashed, killing everyone on board.

And in his last years as Vikings coach, he and some friends were on takeoff one summer from Seattle in a private jet, on their way back from an Alaskan fishing trip, when the nose wheel malfunctioned and the aircraft veered off the runway.

“I’ve been lucky,” Grant said.

The dog rides in comfort

But not so lucky in Regina, when he and Hanson tried to rent a vehicle to continue their hunting trip and then return home.

“No one would rent us a car we could drop off [back] in Minnesota,” Grant said. “Finally, we tried U-Haul. They said they’d rent us a truck. You know, for moving furniture.”

So it was that Hanson and Grant arrived in Regina by winged craft and left in an orange and white lorry, shotguns at their side. In the back lay Boom, the only cargo, splayed on a bed of furniture pads.

“We got to Kindersley about midnight and got up at 4:30 to hunt with my good friend Bill Ziegler from the Twin Cities,” Grant said. “But there weren’t many ducks. Not like it used to be.”

“Wildlife officials who say there are a record number of ducks on the continent don’t know what they’re talking about.”

On the 1,000-mile return journey to Minnesota, Grant and Hanson split driving duties. When they crossed into North Dakota from Canada, a U.S. Customs agent recognized Grant.

“What were you doing in Canada?” the agent asked.

“Duck hunting,” Grant said.

The agent looked at the truck.

“You must have gotten a lot of ducks.”

“Not really,” Grant said. “Don’t believe anyone who says we’ve got a record number of ducks.”

I realize I run the risk of sounding like a total idiot for saying this, but that's never stopped me before. Does anyone else think the Vikings offense might be better over all without Peterson? The style of running game Peterson is best suited to doesn't seem to be real compatible with modern passing games. You can really tell when the Vikings are going to run or pass based on the formation. It seemed like with McKinnon in the game, things were less predictable and the mix of plays was more conducive to Teddy. There is also the matter that despite the claims of improvement over the years, AD still can't block worth shit. I don't know. I probably have my head up my ass on this one, but that is just the feeling I get.

Agreed. I like the play action and rollouts, and without Peterson, there is much less predictability.

I agree 100 %. Teddy realizes he has to be the one in charge and can do the job. It shouldn't mess with his mind but it does. He defers to the future HOFer.

Walter knocked the crap out of defensive players when he blocked. AD can't.

Can someone explain the <1% chance the Vikes miss the playoffs? I don't see how it's even possible. Does it have something to do with a possible 3-way tie and they lose the tiebreaker? But they should win any tie-breaker with Atlanta.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (12/21/2015 1:36:28 PM)

Yes, 3 way tie only with Seattle, Atl and us. We would all be 9-7 and we would lose on strength of schedule.

For this to happen the Vikings have to lose both of our last two games.
Atlanta has to win both.
and the Seahawks have to split their last two

IIRC.

If that occurs we all have 9-7 records and the Vikings are out on strength of schedule. If any scenario works out with Atlanta tied with us but not with Seattle, we win on head to head.

More than likely the Packers and Vikings will be playing two weeks in a row.

bstinger -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (12/27/2015 11:06:59 PM)

Nice night for the purple against a disinterested Giants squad. Pack got their butts handed to them by the Cards. The NFC Norris division is on the line next SUNDAY, Sunday, sunday...

Mr. Ed -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (12/28/2015 6:43:21 AM)

Interesting finish

Conservative start, to me, playing "not to lose". Smith's pick-6 turned the game.

Vikes cannot play that close to the vest at GB next week and expect a decent outcome.

Lacey/Starks will pound on the defense to set up Rodgers play-action.

I expect nothing good to come from that game. Even if GB is banged up on the line, MN has a jones vs the Packers.

TJSweens -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (12/28/2015 10:54:26 AM)

You may be right Ed. The Vikings have tended to react to those ugly ass Puker unis like the Twins seeing Skankee pinstripes. Maybe Zim will get there attitude right for playing GB, where Chillie and Frazier failed. Then again if they lose they play Washington instead of the Sea Hags.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (12/28/2015 12:14:38 PM)

I'm much more confident in a Zimm led team versus KA and PassiveAss. At least we now have a D that gives us a chance. In the past regimes, even if our O could hang, you knew damn well that the D would give it right back. We were always behind the 8 ball.

I do remember one play in this game where he picked up the blitzer perfectly.

I know he's not Moe Williams or anything, but I think everyone's belief that he is completely inable to block is a myth.

Agree.

It's similar to the thought that he sucks in the passing game. Seems he rarely drops a ball and almost always does some damage...

Steve Lentz -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (12/28/2015 2:51:31 PM)

AD is not a great blocker by any measurement, but neither is McKinnon. AD definitely runs better with Teddy behind center. He's not a great receiver, but there has been improvement in that area.
I agree about the formation giving away the play. IMO that is more a reflection on Norv than AD. McKinnon has looked really good in the open field. I believe we are a better team utilizing both.

Our biggest issue remains the Ol which seems to limit Norv and Teddy.
