uh-oh

In this week's ESPN The Magazine, Don Van Natta profiles Cowboys owner Jerry Jones. There's so, so much in there. It starts off with Jones dancing with Kate Bosworth, for goodness sake. But, yeah, this Adrian Peterson story is going to make some news on its own.

The scene: AT&T Stadium, the owner's suite, an intimate little afterparty following a George Strait concert, and Jerry Jones is "tipsy," pouring Johnny Walker Blue Label into plastic cups.

Then a man taps Jones on the shoulder, says Adrian Peterson wants to say hello and hands over an iPhone. Jones says hi to the Minnesota Vikings' star running back and listens, nodding but not smiling. "Well, I understand, Adrian," he says into the phone. The slanted smile returns. "I'd like that, too. ... Well, I love your story. I love your daddy's story. I've always respected what you've been about. I've always been a fan of yours."

Listening to half the conversation, it is obvious Peterson is telling Jones he wants to play for the Cowboys. Peterson, 29, is in the fourth year of a seven-year, $100 million contract that will pay him $11.75 million this autumn to play for the Vikings.

"Well, we'll see what we can do, if we can make that happen," Jones is now saying. "Hmm-hmm. ... I'd like that, too. ... Well, we're talking pig Latin here, but let's see if we can do that." Jones listens, nods and says again, "We're talking pig Latin here, but let's see what we can do about that. OK, Adrian, thanks."

Jones confirmed later that "Peterson told him he wanted to play for the Cowboys," according to ESPN.com, and that the two haven't spoken since. The Vikings had no comment on reports of the conversation when asked about it today. The NFL offered a no-comment as well.

(This is the part where all the tattletales start complaining about tampering. What is wrong with you people? This sort of stuff goes down all the time, but that's not even my objection. Why wouldn't you want Jerry Jones to be laying the groundwork to throw an obscene amount of money at Peterson—or perhaps a reverse-Herschel-Walker trade haul at the Vikings—for a running back who will soon be on the wrong side of 30?

On to the regular season. Don't understand this "hope we can beat the Rams". Don't like that attitude out of the fan base.
If we can't, especially with their recent issues, then we aren't that relevant.

I heard on the broadcast how the whole Rams game has changed with Bradford out, and that it gets "tough" starting with New England. NO overlooking anyone. Play hard, if they're down, stomp on them.

That's not at all tampering [&o] My guess, nothing comes of it because it's JJ.

Damn nice preseason.
Finished it off in style with a smothering.
Just like our physicality and mind-set sop much better than it has been.
We start for real next week, but it sure seems we've taken some real positive strides.

Tonight was the perfect example of how a "good" QB will WIN you games, and a "serviceable" one will lose you games.
Look at Ponder, made some ok throws, made some plays, moved the team ... UNTIL IT REALLY COUNTED.
Could not finish drives. THATS been Vikings football for years. Cassel and Bridgewater finish drives, they get the big first downs, they move the chains. Ponder comes up just short and we keeeek the field goal.

My boy Thielen with a nice TD, hoping he hangs on and makes it.
You start thinking at the start of the game ... "gonna be tough to cut down" but then at the end ... theres some real bone-heads still running around out there.
There were about 4 or 5 unknowns on D who basically cut themselves that last quarter.

On to the regular season. Don't understand this "hope we can beat the Rams". Don't like that attitude out of the fan base.
If we can't, especially with their recent issues, then we aren't that relevant.

Haven't seen it yet but I think Thielen makes it just off of ST's.

Of course not. De facto coach, wanna-be NFL commissioner.

Has anyone brought up the fact that the Packers shouldn't have even been in the playoffs in the Super Bowl year. If I remember correctly a game that was so bad the NFL apologized for the refereeing (the Vikings game) allowed them in the playoffs at all that year.

I bring that fact up quite a bit, when the topic of Packer cheating/favoritism comes up. It was a total travesty.

djskillz -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/29/2014 9:02:52 AM)

Not exactly happy with AD for that, but hopefully he never leaves. If you map out a timeline, I find it hard to believe they let him go in the next couple years with the stadium coming. And then after that, he's going to be starting to break some all-time records (career marks) so I really think there's a decent chance he's a Viking for life. And hopefully we get a good draft pick as compensation for this.

Lynn G. -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/29/2014 9:39:18 AM)

... and by that time he'll have a Superbowl ring with the Vikings while the Cowboys will be in continued decline, so there's that.

[&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:][&:]

Sorry Lynn......

But just as Joe Mauer will never play in a WS as a Twin,
Peterson will never get a superbowl ring as a Viking.

Following the Vikes faithfully since 68 does that to a person.

Following Gardy for his entire managing career does that to a person.

MN Sports Teams do not know how to play and win with superstars

Jim Frenette -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/29/2014 12:32:16 PM)

Simpson handed a 3 day suspension. Time to cut the cord with him and keep Theilen and Smith

ronhextall -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/29/2014 12:42:32 PM)

Petersen had a chance to win a Super Bowl, he fumbled too many times in the NFC Title game, sure the stats say he didn't lose any but I call bullshit on anybody who doesn't think it was a major factor.

Punch that ball in before halftime and the end of that game unfolds differently. AP wet his pants on that fumble, didn't even get credit for the fumble.

Sometimes in life you only get once chance, and his effort in that game didn't cut it.

Jerome Simpson's appeal to the league was unsuccessful. The wide receiver went to the NFL to try to have his 3-game suspension reduced or eliminated.

That suspension has been upheld, according to Darren Wolfson.

The suspension came down after Simpson received a DUI while on probation.

Here's a statement from an NFL spokesperson:

Jerome Simpson of the Minnesota Vikings has been suspended without pay for the first three games of the 2014 regular season for violating the NFL Policy and Program for Substances of Abuse.

Simpson will be eligible to return to the Vikings' active roster on Monday, September 22 following the team's September 21 game against the New Orleans Saints.

Nothing new here. I expected the appeal to fail. Those other 2 get a shot while he's suspended, and they can cut him when the suspension is over, if the 2 are productive.

SoMnFan -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/30/2014 7:59:05 PM)

Any cut surprises for you guys?
Not liking all the fullback love, but other than that ... pretty cut and dried.
My boy Thielen made it! Welcome to the big time, son. Watch some Chris Walsh clips. Then start watching some Jordy Nelson clips.
You can do this. Keep producing. Stay healthy.

SoMnFan -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/30/2014 7:59:53 PM)

What happens when Simpson comes back?
I'm afraid of what happens, that's what ...

djskillz -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/30/2014 10:05:22 PM)

I'm just stoked our FS of the future made it, Exum. Anything else I barely cared about.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/31/2014 8:54:52 AM)

The big surprise for me was Banyard. He was the best back we had in PS, IMO.

He cleared waivers. Will be on our PS.

And the Vikings picked up Marquis Gray off of waivers from Clev. Norv very familiar with him.

Bingo
He could become a usable piece.
Sounds like Norv fell in love with him.

Todd M -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/31/2014 7:32:46 PM)

Not knowing for sure Gray would become available Turner had A.C Leonard pegged for this slot. But he flamed out.

Anyone pick Leonard up?

SoMnFan -> RE: Vikes talk for Twins fans (8/31/2014 7:38:53 PM)

Cant find any info on anyone even sniffing around him.
Must be out there floating.....
