Always loved Morneau, that is really sad news.
Always wanted Liriano back just like Hunter. You have to have pitchers who can miss bats and hitters who are leaders.

That sucks on Morneau.

On another note, Francisco Liriano keeps keepin' on. His last 3 years away from the Twins:

2013: 29 years old-3.02 ERA, 2.92 FIP, 161.0 IP, 9.1 K/9, 163K, 63 BB, 118 ERA+
2014: 30 years old-3.38 ERA, 3.59 FIP, 162.1 IP, 9.7 K/9, 175K, 81 BB, 107 ERA+
2015: 31 years old-2.96 ERA, 3.42 FIP, 45.2 IP, 9.9 K/9, 50K, 19 BB, 134 ERA+

At one point are apologies made by blowhards like Souhan about him being a "headcase" and the narrative finally changed to: "The Twins didn't know what the F they were doing and screwed his early career up royally."

He's been one of the best pitchers in the game for 3 years running now since he left the Twins.

Success of former Twins who had left the organization should have spoken volumes to the ownership that the guys in charge are a bunch of clueless boobs wasting their money.

But loyalty was far too important to them.

If a guy is failing miserably, loyalty only hurts you.

[X(] If we didn't completely screw his development over from 2006 to 2010 re: innings, delay on surgery, etc, he'd still be with us and be a great pitcher for us.

Excellent job here. The most damning indictment of Terry Ryan is that under his watch this organization has produced no starting pitching since Garza was called up in '06. Take a moment to reflect on the starting pitchers who have come through our system since Garza was called up in August of '06. Is there ANYONE of note actually pitching in the majors now?? There was NO coming into this season. Hopefully Gibson can be that guy.....but apart from Gibson (who hasn't quite established himself) what is there?

We all can see that Lohse, Garza and Liriano have had success in the league. But guess what? THe Twins branded all three as "headcases"
Funny how that works.

This organization HAS TO raise its own starting pitching if it ever wants to win anything beyond the AL central pennant. When you raise starting pitching your staff is cost controlled and it allows you to pick up veteran FA position players.

djskillz -> RE: Former Twins News (5/25/2015 11:32:13 AM)

No doubt, Ralph. The good news is that those guys are coming. Berrios/Meyer/Stewart/Gonsalves/Hu/Thorpe/Jorge. Plus May has a chance. We should be able to get at least 3 of that group to be solid for us in addition to Gibson. Plus remember we have the #6 pick this year.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Former Twins News (6/2/2015 2:22:45 PM)

Kevin Slowey will have a career after baseball in ... baseball.

The former Twins pitcher who spent five seasons in Minnesota has taken a job with the MLB Players Associtation, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today.

Slowey was often noted for his intelligence, so a career working with Tony Clark seems to make sense.

He was also a control artist on the mound. In 100 games with the Twins, Slowey walked just 84 batters in 532 2/3 innings, a walk rate of 1.4 batters per 9 innings. He struck out 6.7 batters per 9 innings and posted a 4.66 ERA.

Slowey, who turned 31 in May, last pitched for the Miami Marlins, where he made 17 appearances in 2014.

djskillz -> RE: Former Twins News (6/2/2015 3:02:16 PM)

Good for Kevin. Will always be one of my favorites. He would have had a completely different (and long) career if it wasn't for that wrist injury. Was never the same afterwards.

In his first four seasons Slowey was 39-21, 4.41, with three straight seasons of 10 to 13 wins. K per 9 those seasons were 6.3, 6.9, 7.4 & 6.7. Not too shabby.

twinsfan -> RE: Former Twins News (6/3/2015 9:50:20 AM)

Mackey just told a great Slowey story. Two stories, actually.

One time Slowey was put on the DL with a bicep injury, according to the Twins. Mackey asked Slowey about his injury. Slowey kept talking about his shoulder. Mackey was confused and said if you're talking about your shoulder, why does the Twins press release say it's a bicep injury? Slowey asked "what did you say the release said?" "Bicep injury, Kevin." Then Slowey gives Phil the death stare for a good 5 seconds....and says "Yeah, we'll go with that. Next question?"

The other story was about Slowey's half hour one-on-one meeting with an unnamed reporter where Slowey spent the entire time explaining that the media had no purpose. Mackey said Slowey went on and on about how there's no point in reporters putting anything in the paper or radio about the game or the players at all. If people want to know what happened, just check the scores. The stories are worthless. And if a player wants to communicate with the fans, he'll just use social media.

Stacey King -> RE: Former Twins News (6/3/2015 10:02:43 AM)

For all the talk about the Nationals’ potential free agents –right hander Jordan Zimmermann, right-hander Doug Fister, shortstop Ian Desmond – could it be that the team should be most focused on keeping center fielder Denard Span?

Washington is deep in pitching prospects, while righty Max Scherzer is under club control through 2021 and lefty Gio Gonzalez through ’17. Trea Turner looms as a potential replacement for Desmond, and Michael Taylor, in theory, could replace Span.

Still, the Nats took off when Span returned from core-muscle surgery on April 19. They are 20-13 and averaging 4.94 runs with Span in the lineup, 8-9 and averaging 3.82 runs without him, according to STATS LLC.

That trend actually goes to the start of 2013, when Span joined the club – the Nats are 186-136 (.578) when Span starts, 24-28 (.462) when he does not.

Consider as well: Span is batting .335 since last season’s All-Star break, the best in the majors in that time frame (minimum 300 plate appearances).

Granted, Span will hit the market entering his age 32 season, and his defensive metrics do not always line up with the perception that he is an outstanding center fielder. At this point, though, his value to the Nationals is clear.

Span is aging well. Potential HOFer.

Span will still get paid. What a great contract he's been on all these years. Still highly underrated. Hopefully Meyer still makes that trade worth it.

As for Slowey, awesome. As if I needed another reason to love the guy. You just gave me two.

ugh

Rockies first baseman Justin Morneau continues to experience post-concussion symptoms four weeks after suffering a brain injury and cervical neck sprain on a diving play and has not been cleared to resume baseball activities.

Morneau has a history of concussions, which derailed his career for several seasons in Minnesota. He got back on track with the Rockies last season, hitting .319 to win the batting title, but now the former MVP’s career is again in jeopardy at age 34.

Rockies manager Walt Weiss told Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post that the team plans to be very cautious and patience with Morneau’s recovery timetable, saying:

It’s difficult for Justin, given his history with concussions. This is a process and we have to wait it out. When Justin is ready to play and he’s himself again, he’s our first basem

Reds designate P Jason Marquis, promote P Pedro Villarreal

(4:28 pm ET) The Reds have designated for assignment veteran right-hander Jason Marquis.

The 36-year-old Marquis has failed to prove himself to be a still-viable starter. He has allowed 17 runs on 31 hits in his last 18 innings pitched. He has lost his last three decisions for Cincinnati, his sixth team since 2011.
