Rosario is already ready to be moved back up to New Britain IMO. Get him there before I'm at a game in a couple weeks. [:D]

Dave E -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/4/2014 10:07:32 AM)

Agree, hope they move him up ASAP.

Doesn't matter though Fargo. Positional value. We have CF "covered" as well. If a guy can play C, you play him at C. Then SS, SS. CF, CF. Etc. You should always try to maximize positional value out of a player. Then when the time comes when there's a roster issue, you either move one of the guys to another spot, or you trade him. To do it at high-A or even AA is ridiculous IMO. Rosario can be an EXCELLENT 2b. His ceiling is infinitely lower as a corner OF'er.

By a guy who just as easily could be playing shortstop

Jim Frenette -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/4/2014 10:19:46 AM)

I can go along with a outfield rotation of Hicks, Buxton, Arcia and Rosario

And what about Kepler? Or Adam Walker? We are flush with OF'ers coming. MI's, not so much. Rosario's bat just doesn't play nearly as well as an OF'er. A large part of what's made him special is his ability to play 2b with that bat. And if we can't use him at 2b, you've still added a TON of value in a trade.

SoMnFan -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/4/2014 10:22:52 AM)

Shortstop, IMO, has always been, and always will be ... About confidence.
The same skill sets of 3rd and 2nd basemen, but with better range and supreme confidence.
I used to love examining the differences.
Where dozier is at mentally right now ... Would really help him play a decent short.
Won't happen, I know ... But if I was in charge, him and Molly would be working on that daily.
JJ Hardy hasn't dropped a bit at short, he may even be better as he ages. Of course you get to a point where you lose it, but dozier could have many good years there if they wanted to work on it.
I don't see anyone else helping us there for years ....

djskillz -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/4/2014 10:25:55 AM)

I was originally dead set against Dozier as a SS, but I'm with ya, Scott. Sure wouldn't hurt to try it. We'll probably have our final answer on that come tomorrow, determined by if they draft Gordon or not.

djskillz -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/4/2014 10:27:56 AM)

289 of Dozier's 356 minor league games were played at SS.

SoMnFan -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/4/2014 10:29:23 AM)

He couldn't juggle
Wearing the scarlet G
Learning the MLB way
Learning the Twins way
Playing shortstop
At the same time. He wasn't in a good place. He is now.

That's a lot of confidence in Kepler.

Sadly, they'll put all there eggs in one basket again. Gordon is years off.

So what's plan B. Santana, the CF? (Error machine-scarlett letter)

Polanco, with 17 errors in Hi-A?

After that..........there is no plan.

FORTY-FOUR rbi's.

Work with the lad, Dougie!

Oh, they have their guy now. Pesky-bar.

He's still above .300......but starting to fall......but that's better than Flori,so let's just go with that now, and worry about it another day.

They're competitive, so let's just leave things along. Getting Willingham in a groove is like making a trade.

Breaking down Twins first-rounders during the Terry Ryan era

Twins general manager Terry Ryan didn’t feel up to doing any in-person scouting of amateur players in advance of Thursday’s annual draft, but he’s still providing a valuable resource in the final hours before the club must decide what to do with the fifth overall pick.

“As much as anything, it’s listening,” Twins assistant general manager Rob Antony said. “Sometimes you can listen to all the discussion in that draft room, and he’s smart enough to pick up and be able to ask questions and try and fill in the blanks.”

Since joining the Twins organization in January 1986 as scouting director, Ryan has either directly run or had a strong influence over the past 28 drafts.

In that period, the Twins have called 31 different names in the first round, from California prep right-hander Derek Parks (1986) to Texas prep righty Kohl Stewart (2013).

Deron Johnson has been the Twins scouting director since September 2007, which makes this the seventh draft he has overseen. Before Johnson, Mike Radcliff ran the Twins draft room from 1993 until his promotion in 2007 to vice president of player personnel.

Recommended slot value for the fifth overall pick this year is $3.851 million.

The Twins have held a top-10 selection 12 times over those years, with eight of those coming in the top five.

“Sometimes, when you haven’t seen the players, you don’t have any stake in it,” said Antony, who regularly scouted the amateur ranks from 1995-2007 while working in baseball operations. “It’s harder when you see a player you really like. That’s who you want. You’re pulling for him. You personally saw him.”

Which can cause emotions to rise.

“So now you get (scouts) in that room and they’ve seen guys,” Antony said. “Sometimes it’s good having that voice from the outside. Terry will provide that.”

Since 1986, the Twins have gone the high school route 17 times in the opening round. College players have earned their nod 14 times.

They have taken a pitcher 14 times: 10 right-handers and four lefties.

For right-handers it’s been an even breakdown between high school and college. Three of the four first-round lefties the Twins have taken have come for the college level.

Of the 17 first-round position players the Twins have taken in the Ryan era, eight have been infielders (five college), seven were outfielders (all high school) and two were catchers (Joe Mauer in 2001 and Georgia Tech’s Jason Varitek, who did not sign in 1993).

Seventeen different states have been represented in those Ryan-era picks. California leads the way with nine Twins first-rounders, followed by Texas (three) and four states with two apiece (Georgia, Florida, Virginia and Minnesota).

Eleven other states have accounted for one Twins first-rounder apiece in this period: North Carolina, Ohio, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, Washington, Arizona, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Arkansas and New Jersey.

Prospects Taking On New Positions In 2014

Jorge Polanco

Age: 20. Acquired: Signed as international free agent from Dominican Republic in 2009.

The Twins reshuffled their entire Fort Myers infield to get Polanco everyday work at shortstop, moving Niko Goodrum from short to third base and Travis Harrison from third to left field. A solid defender without any plus defensive tools, Polanco has been error-prone in the early going, committing 16 and posting a .933 fielding percentage. The Twins might be able to live with average defense if the switch-hitter delivers on his ceiling with the bat. One of the Florida State League’s most difficult batters to strike out, Polanco hit .291/.364/.402 with three homers through 50 games.

djskillz -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/4/2014 10:58:00 AM)

I was really impressed with Polanco watching him take BP in ST this year. Has filled out pretty nicely too. Have high hopes for him if he can stick at SS, which is obviously a huge question mark.

Stacey King -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/4/2014 11:00:13 AM)

Fans who want to see Minnesota Twins prospect Eddie Rosario in a Fort Myers Miracle uniform again had better hurry.

Rosario, who missed the first 50 games of this season because of a drug suspension, returned to action May 29 with the Miracle.

The Miracle are scheduled to play the Tampa Yankees at 7:05 tonight at Hammond Stadium, the third of an eight-game homestand that continues with a four-game series against the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Wednesday.

Rosario, 22, hit .329 with 13 doubles, six homers and 35 RBI in 52 games last season for the Miracle, prior to being promoted to Class Double-A New Britian (Conn.).

A fourth-round pick in the 2010 draft out of Rafael Lopez Landron High School in Puerto Rico, Rosario was regarded as one of the Twins' top five minor league prospects before the suspension.

"He was real rusty at the start," Twins director of minor leagues Brad Steil said of Rosario's performances in extended spring training games, before he rejoined the Miracle. "He hadn't done much. By the time the suspension wound down, he was starting to bounce back."

Rosario went 2-for-3 with two runs, a stolen base and an RBI Sunday in just his fourth game back. He entered Monday hitting .214 (3-for-14) with three walks and three strikeouts.

"After being out 50 games, it's going to take awhile," said Fort Myers Miracle manager Doug Mientkiewicz, who after being told to start Rosario at second base last season was asked to give Rosario playing time in the outfield as well this season. "But he can hit. Hopefully he'll be here for a couple more days and then get back to Double-A. He's a good athlete. No matter where you put him, he's going to catch the ball."

Rosario and Steil would not comment as to the drug that led to Rosario's suspension. The two have had lengthy conversations about it.

Rosario said he spent part of spring training with his family in Puerto Rico and is ready to resume the 2014 season.

"It's unfortunate," Steil said of what led to Rosario's suspension. "We talked to him about making smart decisions for his career. We tried to give him access to the help that he needed.

"I think he's in a good place right now. But if you talk to anybody who goes through this, it's an ongoing thing. It's not like it's something where the problem is solved and you can just forget about it."

Steil said the Twins want Rosario to resume playing in the outfield as well as second base, a position that former Miracle infielder Brian Dozier now has locked down in the big leagues with the Twins.

"That's part of the equation," Steil said. "But with anybody in the minor leagues, you never know what spot is going to be open in the big leagues. We're playing that out. He may end up more in the outfield, just because he played all last year at second base."

Rosario said he looked forward to finishing this season in the lineup, whether it be in Fort Myers or New Britain or further up Minnesota's minor league ladder.

"I feel good," Rosario said. "I learned a lot. I learned about concentration. This is just another good opportunity for me."

Miracle starting pitcher Jose Berrios said it was good to see his fellow countryman back.

"He's a great hitter," Berrios said. "He just needs to get ready for Double-A."
