TJSweens -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/15/2015 2:33:07 PM)

It might be the kick in the ass he needs to finally listen to his coaches that he needs to get that big-ass hitch out of his swing. He actually drops his hands below waist level and then tries to brig them back and then try to level it off in time to meet the ball. You just can't get away with that shit in majors. Bruno had ironed it out to a degree last year when Arcia started to hit in the second half. The last time I saw him up here it looked worse than ever. Smalley said Arcia didn't have it the very first time he came up, but loved all the oohs and aahs when he launched homers and just started swinging for the fences on every pitch after that.

Yep. Don't forget Polanco as well.

Appreciate the updates as always, Ed. It's never said enough.

Also, for anyone that's interested and doesn't know: 1) MLB has a really great app, even if you don't want to pony up for MLB.TV. The MLB AtBat app is one of the best there is for the money, IMO. 2) Along with that, MiLB First Pitch is a fantastic Minor League Baseball addition. Gameday minor league updates live. Along with the ability to sort by organization so you can have all the affiliates' games grouped together as one.

Technology really is an amazing thing.

BTW, I really wonder if Periscope is going to change MiLB broadcast rights (or all sports, really). If I were a team I'd just get a really nice camera and at least set up a stationary feed. $500 and you're set.

Is he at AA or AAA?

Polanco is also playing for Dougie at AA.

djskillz -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/16/2015 10:19:49 AM)

Almost all the talent is at AA, and we will likely see a lot of guys going straight from there to the majors in the next couple of years.

1) Dougie's there, their runner up for manager. And he's had most of these kids throughout the minors.
2) The Southern League is a very good AA league, plus you have the early season weather that is much better than New Britain. ie less chances of injuries, etc.

djskillz -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/16/2015 10:23:29 AM)

Maybe I'm being too high on him, but Kepler is the real wild card in the future OF to me. We seem to be fairly set for the future with Buxton and Rosario at 2 spots if you ask me. Certainly Buxton. That leaves one spot.

As of now it looks like Arcia or Sano is the RF. Either one would have to be hidden defensively there for a couple of years before making a transition to 1b or DH. But in an ideal world Kepler (and he's making a believer out of many) takes that 3rd spot and then you have really tremendous athletes at all 3 spots in the OF with great range.

I'd look to deal at least one of Vargas/Arcia (maybe even both) along with some of our other parts (Santana/Polanco/Pinto if they're not going to trust him at C) and try to upgrade at three spots:

1) SP (only for an ace like Hamels/Price) Anything less doesn't really do us any good.
2) SS A vet to get us through a few years until hopefully Gordon takes over.
3) C An upgrade over Suzuki/Pinto.

I find it interesting that more and more teams are rarely using AAA for their top flight talent and just jumping them to the bigs.

it SEEMS LIKE

AAA is becoming a vast wasteland for has beens and never-weres.

djskillz -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/16/2015 10:26:32 AM)

Ya, it's happening more for sure. Kind of the "tweener"/depth spot right now. I'm curious if those markets will ever rebel against that. The Nashvilles/Memphises/Charlottes of the world are waaaaaaayyyyy better cities/stadiums than you have in most AA cities. In minor league ball from a venue standpoint it's still much more about the experience for most fans than it is the actual prospects/teams/winning games, but I still wonder if eventually there will be a push back on that change.

If I'm Rochester I'm pretty upset that I never get Buxton from a marketing standpoint.

Kepler and Buxton, both having success in a league 2-3 years (on average) older than them, should be viewed as an excellent sign.

Agreed, that someone has to take on RF. I'd prefer the more speedy/athletic guy that helps cover ground.

KC has demonstrated what happens when you have offense and defense in the outfield. Makes life a lot more difficult for your offense.

Sano can play first. 3rd in a pinch.DH. Occasional RF?

Arcia is having a lost year. His value is low. Hold onto him, see if he matures. May take a while.

Vargas? Not sure what to make of the baby Papi. These days, he's seemingly becoming a HUGE singles hitter.

If Buxton goes back down, it'll be back to AA, and jump back up. Only AAA as a last resort.

And you're right,if they continue this process, some AAA cities will start whining.

djskillz -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/16/2015 10:30:24 AM)

Yep, Ed. I much prefer that too. LONGTERM (like 2-3 years from now) I'd like to see something like:

C-New guy that is good at defense and offense
1b-Sano (Mauer if he can revert to old form)
2b-Dozier
SS-Gordon or a vet that's good all-around
3b-Plouffe. I'd like to see him here for another 4-5 years at least.
RF-Kepler
CF-Buxton
LF-Rosario
DH-Arcia or Vargas (or Sano if Mauer reverts to old form)

Mr. Ed -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/16/2015 10:32:50 AM)

RF-Kepler
CF-Buxton
LF-Rosario

I would like that.

A lot.

Walker will be knocking on the door for this too, if he can cut back on K's and hit around 270 with that power.

djskillz -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/16/2015 10:35:35 AM)

Yep. Possible he turns into the DH or 1b option if Arcia/Vargas can't make it. Sano's the trouble one. What to do with him? He's ALMOST ready IMO at least offensively. He's ripping the ball right now like he was in 2014. So where do you put him? You can't put him at 3b, Mauer's at 1b, and we still have Hunter on this squad.

I guess he probably just displaces Vargas/Arcia at DH when he's ready. Maybe more days off for Joe at 1b ahead.

That OF would be athletic as hell with a lot of offensive ability. Could be our version of Pittsburgh's awesome young OF.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Players and prospects III (6/16/2015 10:35:58 AM)

Walker 3/23 in15 games this month for BB/K

STILL OPS of 1.108, OBP is .371 this month thanks to a .333 avg

SLG .737 will dothat for you (6 doubles/triple/5 HR in 15 games)

Chatt is not that big of a park is it Dustin? he is only hitting .211 at home, .311 on the road.

Decent size park, but without looking at exact dimensions, I'd call it average. I still like Walker too, but he HAS to cut down on those K's. You can't strike out in 40 percent of your ab's AND not walk.

Seems like they don't want to give up on him at 3rd, but he's not been very good there.

So perhaps in the 2nd half, before callup [;)]

Sano needs to start working at first and in the OF.

Kepler has played a few at first; I don't get that, given his athleticism. I'd be trying Walker there, too.

Agree. I'd be playing Kepler in a corner OF spot and displacing Walker or Harrison. Kepler is the one with the brighter future and higher ceiling.

Watched Buxton Triple...10.1 from Home to 3rd and he almost tripped twice.....Trout and Billy Hamilton 10.3.
