I will say this about Mauer and the concussion. He didn't get moved solely because of the concussion. He got moved because the concussion was the last straw. It was a cumulative thing of all the injuries over the years and a realization they had to do something to keep him in the lineup.

You would think in this day and age the experts could use the latest technology and come up with some kind of ultra impact absorbing mask for catchers. Joe would maybe have to quit using the new age lightweight masks catchers have been spoiled with and wear something more bulkier and heavier, AND MORE PROTECTIVE.

Imagine the benefits:

-Frees up a log jam at 1st.
-Mauer can play part time, stay fresh, and solidify his status as a HOF catcher.

Dustin would like the HOF part.

He'll be in the HOF regardless as long as he hits like normal (like he's been doing lately). IMO. He's almost a lock there already, I still believe. His catcher numbers stack up very well with the all-time greats.

I wish he could have stayed at C too, but that is over. No going back. And we all need to move on from that pipedream IMO.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Players and prospects III (7/8/2015 9:50:20 PM)

Joe is not built to be a catcher...6'6" and he started having back, knee, and other injuries.....it won't be in the cards. FYI Wieters is another really tall catcher.

AJ at 6'3" is one tough SOB and can I emphasize tough...I would love to have that jackwagon back.

Black 47 -> RE: Players and prospects III (7/8/2015 11:17:00 PM)

Would love AJ back. Never dreamed I'd say that. Just think if AJ hadn't spurned us last year we never would have gotten saddled with Suzuki.

djskillz -> RE: Players and prospects III (7/10/2015 12:51:30 AM)

Ed, went to a Smokies game (playing Biloxi) tonight for a client event. Oh my, Orlando Arcia is good. He is going to be a stud.

3 for 4 tonight with a walk and 2 doubles. Kid is super athletic (ie should be able to stick at SS) and strong, etc. Just 20 and he looks like he's close to major league ready, as a SS.

I'd trade anyone in our system for him (except Buxton), possibly even Sano.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Players and prospects III (7/10/2015 10:35:06 AM)

Now that the dust has largely settled, Baseball America’s Ben Badler breaks down at the clubs that have exceeded their total allotment. By Badler’s reckoning, fully one-third of the league will be restricted from spending more than $300K in next year’s July 2 market, with the Dodgers, Giants, Cubs, Royals, and Blue Jays joining the five teams that are set to serve the second year of their bans. (Toronto will only face one season of limitations, as their spending stands.)
Badler also explains how all the bonus pool deals were put to use by the teams making them.
In the same piece, Badler takes a stab at predicting which clubs are planning to blow their budgets next year.
He says that the Braves “seem determined” to make a big splash, while the industry chatter is that they could be joined by the Nationals, Rangers, Twins, and Padres.

djskillz -> RE: Players and prospects III (7/10/2015 10:37:33 AM)

I still hate this system. Restricting things makes it harder for small market teams that are doing their work to build relationships with these guys, etc. Not easier.

As feared, Max Kepler (throwing shoulder) has been scratched from Sunday's All-Star Futures Game. #Royals IF Balbino Fuenmayor replaces him.

What a run he's on. The man can hit.

Stacey King -> RE: Players and prospects III (7/10/2015 10:51:15 PM)

Arcia is a big time talent. For all his learning and flailing at the big league level he has a better eye in the majors than Vargas so far. If he ever puts it together and smooths out the rough edges, he can rake. Much too soon to kick him to the curb.

Arcia - 6.8% BB rate.
Vargas - 4.8%

He has almost as much power as Sano....played with a bad back last year and hit 20 HR.....I think his hip injury was more than what was talked about last year.

The bad thing about Arcia is he doesn't seem to have the baseball body that Rosario, Hicks, Buxton, and Hunter have. He might not be able to have a long career in the field and seems to get injured easily but boy does he have power.
