I definitely want to see Buxton cut down more on his strike outs before he comes up. With guys like Sano, Park, Vargas, Arcia, etc., K's are partially a by product of a power hitter's swing. For a hitter like Buxton it is more about approach and judgment. I want him to close the hole in his swing before he comes back up here. Otherwise he will have another rough go of it.

There is no shortage of players who can be dominant in AAA, but are a cut below in the majors. Tommy Milone is a clear example of this. Up and down the history of baseball there are examples of this. Just because Buxton is "athletic" and can run and throw it doesn't mean he is a top flight ballplayer. He needs to learn how to hit major league pitching. It is as simple as that. His level of competence in this area is not up to standard. This idea of that we call him up and simply write him (and Kepler) into the lineup card is ridiculous. People like to cite how we did that with Puckett, Gaetti, Hrbek, etc....
Doesn't work like that. That was one example up against literally hundreds since that have not worked.

1981 was the perfect environment for that to happen. That was the strike year and it was easy for minor leaguers to get their feet wet in that strike-shortened second half. A guy like Buxton is in no way prepared for the grind of a 162 game season. He needs to play a full season in AAA this year. His development was stunted by injuries. He needs to sort himself out in Rochester. He's a September callup. No sense having him up any time soon

The message is always the same from Rochester Red Wings manager Mike Quade when it comes to hitting:

Don't swing at a pitch you can't drive. It's much better to take strike two and have another chance to produce than it is to hit weakly into an out.

That's the approach to hitting Byron Buxton is getting better at executing in the batter's box.

He showed it again on Wednesday night, going 3-for-4 with a double and home run as the Red Wings opened an early 7-0 lead and then held on for 9-8 victory over Indianapolis at Frontier Field.

He tattooed a changeup that was down in the zone off the wall in left field to lead off the bottom of the first. He hit another down-in-the-zone changeup an estimated 438 feet over the center-field wall for a two-run home run in the second inning.

Over the past 10 games he has played, Buxton is 17-for-41 (.415) with two homers and three doubles. He has also struck out nine times in that span.

"I'm still trying to figure a few things out but overall I feel pretty good about how far I've come," Buxton said.

The biggest component to his success has been better plate discipline. He's not chasing out of the zone often. He's doing his best to lay off the high pitch that still could be a strike.

"The ball I popped up my fourth at-bat, it was a little bit up," Buxton said. "That's what we've been trying to work on, hitting pitches low in the zone.

"It's figuring out what type of hitter you are. It's tough for me because I'm not a high-ball hitter. That's a tough pitch for me to handle so I gotta work it down a little more and see it down. Even though it might be a strike, it's tough for me to get on top of the ball."

The key to mastering that feat: repetition.

"Being disciplined is so important, and you also realize how big a problem it is when you chase," Quade said. "It's a lot tougher not to chase up there (in the majors) than it is down here. You get a foundation down here and then it's not as tough up there."

Buxton was hardly the only part of the offense on Wednesday. Adam Brett Walker hit a monster homer in the first inning; the ball landed in the far lane of Plymouth Avenue beyond the left-field wall. Tommy Field also homered and drove in four runs while Eddie Rosario had two hits.

Jason Wheeler was strong on the mound again, allow five hits, one walk and two runs over six innings.
