Walker's grand slam cemented a 6-1 FTM win Friday

#18 came with a 2-1 lead in the 8th inning, his 18th. gives him 62 rbi's (1-4)

Polanco drove the other in with a triple(1-4, triple #5). Hicks had the other hit, a double/R. They drew 7 walks

Berrios 9-3 6IP 6H/UER/BB/4K/E(1)
Gruver 3IP H/BB/2K/Save(1)

Caught this one as well, Ed. (Been an awesome weekend) Was great to see the guys even though the stands were virtually empty on a hot day, even though it was the 4th. Was so stoked to see Berrios pitch finally, after just missing him 4-5 times the last couple years. Kid is a solid athlete. Really didn't have his best stuff on Friday (super hot day though) but he battled through. Defense didn't do him any favors either. A misplay by Walker in RF and a couple of other missteps too. Still, kept them in the game and bore down when he needed to. Was throwing in the high 80's a lot but then at times ramping it up into mid-90's. Fairly impressed. Kepler still getting it; ditto for Harrison. Goodrum made a couple of really smooth, excellent plays at 3b. Night and day how comfortable he is there compared to when I saw him at SS last year at Cedar Rapids. And the kid is huge, bigger than Adam Walker, so that move made sense. He was definitely too big for SS. Polanco was solid. Walker had the bomb, which truly was a bomb. You knew it was gone as soon as he hit it; deep CF. Harrison I will say this; I have some hope for him. When he does make contact (fair or foul) the ball does have that "different sound" off his bat. Would be nice to see him progress. Roberts, I don't get; either move the kid up or cut ties. Turner is a big kid at C (filled out). Also appeared solid.

Talked to a couple "regulars" there who had some really good info. They said Berrios is a great worker but is so dedicated that you'd think he doesn't enjoy the game. Rarely smiles, very perfectionist, etc. All good things to me. Said he is well grounded and has a great following of family/friends that come to visit him often. Makes sense with the proximity to Puerto Rico while he's at this level.

Said Vargas was almost polar opposite. Crazy character of a guy. "Never seen him upset or with a smile on his face." Very funny, infectious guy. Sounds so much like David Ortiz. Said they developed quite the bond over ST a couple years ago and Ortiz would have him over for dinner, etc. Had only great things to say about Buxton and Sano. There was a rumor that Buxton was supposed to play today at GCL; guess that didn't happen. Sano they said right now is just kind of fielding balls from a chair and rolling balls back, etc. But overall is doing work and progressing well. Had a lot of good things to say about Dozier, Danny Santana, and Mauer from ST and time there. Said when Mauer was down there rehabbing a couple years back his work ethic was unreal with his drills, etc. Dozier hard worker as well. Santana good community guy.

Overall fantastic baseball couple of days. Will post pics when I get them off of my camera in next couple days. Going to hit Rochester and New Britain next month or so.

ewen21 -> RE: Players and prospects III (7/7/2014 10:07:35 AM)

I want to start hearing more about Buxton's bat. I get the fact that he has speed and plays wonderful defense. He needs to be an impact bat for me to get excited.

Phil Riewer -> RE: Players and prospects III (7/7/2014 10:10:47 AM)

Sano possibly could start DHing batting in August some time and not throwing....

Stacey King -> RE: Players and prospects III (7/7/2014 10:14:55 AM)

Mason Melotakis is also heading to the New Britain

McMurfy -> RE: Players and prospects III (7/7/2014 11:27:12 AM)

From The Oregonian

Former Oregon pitcher Jake Reed has only been out of college for a month and he's already received his first promotion.

The right-handed pitcher, who saved 13 games for the Ducks this season out of the bullpen, has been reassigned from the Minnesota Twins' rookie league team in Elizabethton, Tenn., to their Single-A ball club in Rapid City, Iowa.

Reed, the 140th pick in the June MLB Draft and announced the move on his Twitter account, was dominant in his limited action in Elizabethton. In four appearances, Reed recorded three saves, allowed one hit and struck out eight in six innings pitched. Opposing batters have hit a minuscule .053 off the La Mesa, Calif., native and he's dramatically clamped down on his walk count. Reed had the most electric arm on the Oregon roster this past season, but often times struggled with his control. In 37 innings this past season, Reed walked 15 batters, but he has yet to walk anyone as a professional.

Yeah, I know, The Oregonian is not known for their editor and fact proofing.
