Mr. Ed -> RE: Players and prospects III (7/2/2014 5:52:41 AM)

5. International free agency opens Tuesday, when teams can sign amateur players outside the United States and Canada. Any player outside those two countries who will turn 17 by Sept. 1, 2015, is eligible to sign with a Major League club.

The Twins will have a $3,686,600 million bonus pool, according to Baseball America's Ben Badler. The size of each team's pool is based on a reverse order of Major League winning percentage from the previous season. The Astros have the largest bonus pool at just more than $5 million. The Twins have the fifth largest pool.

Twins GM Terry Ryan said they'll be aggressive in spending that money.

"Yeah, just like 29 other teams," Ryan said. "There'll be people we're all chasing and a lot of them are the same guy."

The Twins did not spend their entire bonus pool last year. It's possible they could go over the limit provided by Major League Baseball, but they would be heavily taxed for that. Ryan said they'd consider going over, but said that it "depends on the player and the situation and how much you would pay if you go over [the allotted bonus pool], with the tax."

Source: #Twins have agreed to $800K deal w/ RHP Huascar Ynoa, #17 on @mlb Top Int’l Prospects list http://atmlb.com/1irBBzQ

Mr. Ed -> RE: Players and prospects III (7/2/2014 8:45:06 AM)

Huascar YnoaRank: 17Puerto Plata, Dominican RepublicHeight: 6'2", Weight: 190Position: RHPDOB: 5/28/1998Bats: R, Throws: R

Scouting Grades: Fastball: 65| Curve: 55 | Changeup: 65 | Control: 55

The younger brother of A's pitching prospect Michael Ynoa, Huascar Ynoa is one of the most interesting prospects available on the international market this year. When Ynoa is on, he's really on, and he's arguably the best pitcher on the market. But when he's not on, he frustrates observers and draws the ire of scouts who have high expectations for the teenager.<;p> Evaluators love Ynoa's fastball, a pitch that hovers in the low 90s and was recently clocked at 94 mph. He also throws a cut fastball in the 90-91 mph range. Ynoa's repertoire also includes a splitter, curveball and a changeup -- the pitch some scouts believe is his best secondary pitch. Ynoa, who just turned 16 in May, is growing and still learning how to harness and repeat his delivery. He played in the International Prospect League.

One thing is certain: arms like Ynoa's don't come around very often. He is based in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, and is trained by Edgar Mercedes. The Twins are the favorite to sign the young pitcher.

That could be the new Twins moniker....waiting for a prospect to get promoted--have a Snickers.

Hicks has a LH double in the first of 2 in NB

Only his 3rd xbh in 15 games in AA.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Players and prospects III (7/3/2014 5:08:33 PM)

Check that. Hicks has now hit a 2 run HR, LH, his 2nd in AA, both LH.

djskillz -> RE: Players and prospects III (7/4/2014 7:07:29 AM)

They've been walking Hicks a ton though, haven't they?

Was in E-Town last night. Controversial ending there; seemed like Twins got screwed. Gordon made a couple of misplays last night but he's a good athlete that should definitely stick. I was very impressed with his pitch recognition as he "just missed" a lot of balls against a couple of good pitchers. Nice walk and single, both of which came in long ab's. I think he will be a good one.

Gibbons (Aussie) looked okay. He should.

Jorge Fernandez is a big dude for that level and at C. 6-3 to 6-4 it looked like.

Sorry Stacey and Ed, can't be a believer in Mad Max after seeing him. Just too small for me. 5-11 I think and not overwhelming as an athlete. How many "smallish" RF'ers make it?

Overall great to see the guys. On to Ft. Myers day game today to see Berrios before on to DC tonight for fireworks.

Thanks for the info Dustin. Mad Max will probably be one of those long-time minors guys.
Gibbons 11 Ks, he's 21 now, time to get moving thru the system.
Fernandez is another 2 year GCL guy, now finally at Eliz.

Don't get how the Twins just "patiently" keep some guys at the GCL level 2 stinkin' years.
