My exact words after we left the bases loaded in the 9th with a 11-10 lead was: "I think we are in trouble"
You just knew things were setting up in their favor. Our starting pitching was rightly cited as being the goat for last night. Berrios had nothing and it cost us dearly. We were into the pen enough the last couple of nights and even with all the run support he gave it back. Could not make it through the fourth inning.
I was ripping Joe earlier in the day and he ended up having one of his biggest games ever. Driving in five runs in a game is an accomplishment. Yeah, runners "happen to be on base" but you have to actually DO IT and he did. More of those kinds of games from Joe Mauer would benefit the Minnesota Twins enormously at this point. Anyone who thinks otherwise is off their rocker. I will continue to say that both he and Buxton have underachieved offensively this year. Look at their numbers and there is no way around it. Molitor had them earmarked for 3 and 4 in the lineup. I don't think anyone here thought that made any sense (except for Matt with Mauer's spot), but it does indicate how highly regarded both players are by management and a large portion of the fanbase. Every single game there is an ongoing conversation about Buxton's defense. It is great that he is an acrobat out there, but without the bat he is only half a player to me. I am not inclined to praise his defense because of that. I leave that to Steve O, Dustin, SMF and Matt. They have that market cornered, Any more and it would be almost intolerable. If I got started in that this board would be unreadable
Someone needs to reflect on his offensive performance. Kerry does it, so does Mark and so does Ed. I have taken a few Sundays this year to write a paragraph or so on it. We need balance. Good to see him hitting more. If and when he gets to a level where his offense is not a liability then I can truly appreciate him..
I know exactly what a post like this leads to. I will now be rigidly labeled a detractor for my commentary on his lack of offensive production (even though it is true). I will be told to be patient, but really...I have been. Simply talking about things that aren't all that great is what it is. And now when Buxton does good things I will be skewered for it. It is the way things work here and I am OK with that. I also know that when I call out guys on their flaws often times they respond for some odd reason.
So Joe. Stop being a little bitch. Put the big boy pants on and pretend you are a man. The wholesome momma's boy "I'm so humble" routine is cute. Keep doing it if that's your thing, but when you step into the box ACT LIKE A MAN!!!
And Buxton. It is nice that you run around like a Thomspson's Gazelle, but this is baseball. Track shoes are not required, but they are nice to have. What is required is something called A BAT. Hit the damn ball!! Drive in runs. And YES....use your head. This is the major leagues. It ain't a sandlot game. Bring the energy and all that but bring some smarts as well. That is what will get you to the next level as a hitter.
Twins off-season: ZZzzzzzzz
