This is actually encouraging. A team is struggling and obviously doesn't know who they are yet. Yet they're in the game in the 4th quarter on the road.

Against a perennial power.

Missing their star...

Yeah, we do suck I guess.

One game. And it was honestly about what I expected. Check back with me in December.

Not a good start to the season.

Wiggins played pretty well, so that's something.

Our 2 biggest FA acquisitions got benched for the 4th so that says something......

Already miss Rubio.

On both ends.

I prefer Rubio over Teague for this team, but he (Rubio) isn't exactly making history for the PG-starved Utah team tonight.

But Utah won! Rubio needs to keep working on that shot however...

Butler looked awesome. Wiggins was promising. KAT was KAT. Crawford and Muhammad had some moments. Bjelica was good.

On the other hand ...

Not impressed by Taj or Teague ... or should I say Tea-ugh ... not an improvement over Rubio, but at least we're paying him more.

I think if the 2 bolded things actually happen, we'd have won the game.

Butler: 12 points on 5/12 shooting, some sloppy turnovers and never seemed that engaged on either end.

KAT: I thought he looked awful. Forcing tough shots, biting on every fake, some curious pass attempts and a little too much of bowling through his own guys for rebounds. Reminded me of early last year when he got off to a slow start.

That said, I'm not worried about either guy (except maybe for KAT on defense)

Also based on tonight, I'm not sure where Dieng's minutes are going to come from.

KAT is going to play 36 minutes every night. Gibson and Bjelica both seem more suited to play PF than Dieng.

The Gibson/Dieng pairing was a huge mess on offense, and there just aren't many teams that are physically big enough to warrant playing KAT/Dieng together. Even against a bigger team like the Spurs, Thibs went with Butler at PF down the stretch.

Dieng's 14 minutes from tonight might be the norm for him this year.

Observations. Still not much defense by the team. Tons of very sloppy play. Bright side Jones and Bjelly may see a lot more playing time. I don't know how god the Spurs are but they out played us. The 4th was very sloppy and we caved when the pressure was on. Need to step up the play big time. Neither KAT nor Butler were dominant. Lot of players need to get the rust off and get into game shape.

The Spurs looked pretty good...forgot they picked up Rudy Gay. He played a lot of minutes. Aldridge is so much taller and longer than KAT, Dieng, and Taj....we always struggle inside against him---we missed a ton of shots inside.

So disappointing Wolves couldn’t beat a Spurs team without their best player.

Had we just hit a handful of open shots they’d have won. Very strange professionals can’t hit open shots.

So disappointed in Teague & Gibson. Was Thibs signing players just to sign players?

You could see Dieng’s frustration. He’s gone from a starter playing heavy minutes, to a bit player. Although I have a feeling he’ll be taking more and more of Gibson’s minutes as the season goes on.

Bjelica seems to be one of the most important cogs in this team. He’s better than I ever thought he’d be.

NBA is so matchup based....Gibson doesn't do as well against the length the Spurs have: Taj, Gasol, and Gay. Gay is going to be big for the Spurs. Remember the Spurs are very tough at home.

Teague doesn't matchup well against Murray either.

Crawford, Bjelica, and Wiggins were the matchup problems for the Spurs but we couldn't exploit it enough.

Teague doesn't match up against anyone defensively. He's an absolute train wreck on that side of the ball.

I wanted Taj Gibson a couple years ago. Would have been a great fit.

Not to mention Thibs way overpaid for him. It just kills me to see how easily Thibs could have put a much better supporting cast around KAT/ Butler / Wiggins.

Teague not in at crunch time?

Bjelica outplays Taj and Dieng.

Tyus outplays Teague.

Doesn't say much for Thibs' cash outlay decisions...

I WILL stay positive, but trading my two favorite players makes it a challenge; and as said here seeing how "the vets" played tonight, as well as most of the rest of the team, doesn't go down easy.

I am happy for T Jones but as commented on team not looking much like a team tonight. I expected at least a few more positives. Didn't read the Star Tribune article but Headline "Wolves lose with a dud in San Antonio" seems to capture my view.

The Wolves played like individuals. The Spurs played like a team that knows how to play basketball.

At least you can say this for Thibs. He wasn't afraid to sit his top two Free agent acquisitions in the 4th quarter, even if it meant Thibs the coach made Thibs the GM look bad.

I definitely appreciate that.

Its probably the best possible outcome of an impossible decision. The league has quickly moved away from HC/GM combos because it just doesn't work. Thibs and SVG are the only ones left - and both have made a lot of questionable at best roster moves.

He would've been great a few years ago.

But not only has he gotten older, but the league has changed so much around him. He can still be a positive on defense, but its tough to play a PF that can't shoot. The Spurs didn't even guard him last night and the results were him leading us in FGAs in the first half.

Bjelica isn't real good, but we were a much better team with him on the floor. They had to respect his shooting, so Pau had to play a very different game and it simplified and opened things up for KAT.

Without Ricky we really need to figure out some kind of offense. Even last year our offense was a mess until Thibs took the ball out of Wiggins' hands and put it in Ricky's.

Our offense last night was jacking up early shots or dribbling down the shot clock at the top of the key. Neither of which requires much effort or thought from the opponents defense. It also felt like when we did run sets, we didn't start them until about halfway through the shot clock.

It also seemed that the Spurs knew our base sets so they didn't let us run anything either.....offense obviously is a work in progress.

We really didn't run much of anything, so we made it easy on them.

On the other hand every time the Spurs made 3 passes they got an open jumper. If they made 4, it was an open layup.

I do want to offer some praise to Wiggins. 5 rebounds is perfectly acceptable (4 from Taj is not), and I liked his role on offense. He took less bad shots than usual, his catch and shoot 3s look outstanding - and they remove some of his offensive negatives from the equation (dribbling, those damn stepbacks, decision making). And he still got to the line a ton (but hit your damn FTs).

1 combined assist/steal/block is still not great, and he had some lapses, but I thought his overall defense looked improved. I thought the two times he really looked bad were the result of getting hung out to dry after he correctly rotated to make up for horrible Jeff Teague gambles.

Have to give them credit for bringing in Thibs, but damn can’t help but wonder how we’d look had we kept Mitchell and Newton. Granted, no Thibs means no Butler. Have to remember that.
