Does this sound like a guy even remotely interested in moving Butler, or doing what Taylor asks?

----------------------

SAN ANTONIO — Throughout this entire Jimmy Butler saga in Minnesota, Tom Thibodeau has been resolute in his position.

It’s all overblown.

The All-Star and centerpoint of Thibodeau’s rebuilding process wanting out after one season in Minnesota?

“This isn’t the first time a player asked to be traded,” Thibodeau said on media day.

Butler’s continued public expression of annoyance and/or frustration with the development curve of Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins?

“I’ve been around a long time. I don’t buy into any of that stuff,” Thibodeau said during an appearance at the State Fair. “You have to distinguish what’s real and what’s not real.”

Butler returning to practice last week for the first time in three weeks and barking at anyone and everyone in the gym, including his coach and GM Scott Layden?

“As far as talking in practice, I’ve been in the NBA for 100 years,” Thibodeau said this week. “When players scrimmage, they’re going to talk. … There were several guys talking. That’s not uncommon.”

Leaving practice to do a nationally televised interview with ESPN all in an effort to make keeping him on this roster as difficult as possible?

“In today’s world, it’s a different world,” Thibodeau said. “There’s all the social media. It’s the accessibility. I have no problems with a guy doing interviews.”

A disconnect between his desires and those of owner Glen Taylor, who wants to grant Butler’s trade request?

“Great, great,” Thibodeau said of his communication with Taylor through this process. “The one thing about Glen is we probably talk, he, Scott and I, probably three or four times a day. It’s been clear that we’re always going to try to do what’s best for our team.”

Thibodeau has an answer for every twist and every unexpected turn in the Butler saga, all aimed at delivering the message that the nervousness and concern that has hung in the air in the Twin Cities is all completely unnecessary. This happens all the time, Thibodeau has said. Every team deals with adversity at some point in the season, he maintains. Move along. Nothing to see here.

Love it.

It could be true, Butler changes mind.

It could be Thibs being stubborn. Thibs wants Butler so he can have the team he wants or he wants to be fired. Either way, he gets paid.

I wonder if at some point Glenn will have to take over the team and make the trade himself.

trade deadline is a long ways away, likely more twists and turns before that day.

From a poster on Canis:

-------------------

Meanwhile at the other end of the spectrum is this year's Knicks.

Fizdale plays 10+ guys (not Courtney Lee!) including 3 rookies (one an undrafted FA). He preaches pace, defense and "positionless" basketball. He wants guys to go all out, pressure the ball and then sub. Kevin Knox, their #1 pick, didn’t start and was told he had to earn his minutes to be fair to others (he played 24 inefficient minutes with a few nice plays).

Fizdale is developing Frank Ntilikina into a defensive stopper and started him at the 3. He’s also playing promising draft busts like Noah Vonleh and Super Mario.

They will be a bad team. But their fast paced game is already more fun than the Wolves.

Fitzdale’s a great interview. Hope he lives up to his hype.

This is what it looks like when players like their coach:

I wish we woulda made that trade with the Sixers. Hopefully it's still an option, but I doubt it. Teams don't wanna rethink their strategy once the regular season begins. It's not like baseball or hockey.

What trade with the sixers. Only one I heard being offered was Butler for Simmons.

Butler for Covington, Smith, Saric and a 1st round pick.

I think is talking about trade offers that you didn't make up.

Forgive me as I take this moment to beg for some validation. From 10/17/18.

We didn't get an FRP or Smith. We had to take Bayless. So the actual deal is way below the deal you proposed. However, it is the most realistic deal we could have possibly hoped for and we got it done.
The Wolves are proving you don't have to take shit when a star requests a trade. Wiggins didn't work out well in the end, but getting the first overall pick and multiple FRPs for Love was far better than anyone imagined and this deal beats most of the expectations as well.

Had Glen not insist on signing Wiggins we could have simply let him walk after this season and have 25ml more cap space to sign useful players.

I hit on the framework of the deal.

Yes. I just hope that he has a decent year this year and signs his 5 year max for $190 million next year. Than his game goes to crap and the tank king 76ers never have any success.

We're not as talented of a basketball team as we were before the trade. We should be a better and more cohesive team from this point forward. We still have two huge problems.
Thibs and Wiggins.

Jimmy Butler played in Friday's game with the Minnesota Timberwolves against the Sacramento Kings, but he viewed it as a "fork in the road" and was prepared to begin sitting indefinitely if the franchise didn't fulfill his trade request.

The Wolves were informed that Butler would stop playing.

Butler was traded the next day to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Brian Windhorst of ESPN reported that the Wolves were prepared to trade Butler after last Wednesday's game and began soliciting final offers. The Athletic reported that Butler was almost held out of Friday's game due to traction on a possible trade.

Thibs and Wiggins.

Thibs is a smart guy. Assuming he worked out the Butler trade for RoCo and Saric he did everything right in the very difficult Butler situation. He held out, suffered scorn and ridicule and in the end got the best trade imaginable at least to me.

Thought the NBA crew on ESPN nailed it pretty well.

I think it's cute how they think he will wait until the end of the season.

We didn't.

We missed out on Richardson+Waiters.

I love Richardson, but Waiters essentially cancels out his bargain contract.

Covington+Saric > Richardson.

For once, Taylor didn't screw things up. He did exactly what he said he was going to do. From ESPN:

The deal was negotiated on the ownership level with Philadelphia's Josh Harris and Minnesota's Glen Taylor, league sources said.

Do you prefer Richardson and three years of Waiters to RoCo and Saric? It may have included a protected FRP. I always preferred the RoCo Saric possibility.

I have been hearing rumors that the deal left both GMs out as per the bottom of DLs post. Officially it was Thibodeau and Brand per other reports.

That's debatable IMO. Covington and Saric are nice complementary players. With that said, Richardson is an emerging star, who would pair nicely with KAT for a number of years. I get what you are saying about contracts. I fully appreciate the impact that can have. Get creative and figure out how to move a bad contract. That part of what an NBA FO is supposed to be able to do.

This doesn't bode well for Thibs and makes me think he was undermining the process all along. The owner had to step in and make a deal that his POBO couldn't get done. And it wasn't like stepping in and signing Joe Smith to an illegal contract or guaranteeing Troy Hudson's 6 year deal.

Rumors are still strong that Thibs is on very thin ice.

A lot of pressure from the minority owners and operations folks.
