Knowing what you know now, and it's the mid-80s....

You have a choice of starting your team with John Stockton or Karl Malone....which one do you choose? There are no guarantees as to who you get to round out the rest of your team. But assume you will only have one or the other. Which guy do you choose?

Malone by a mile. I'm sure others will disagree.

Why are you sure others will disagree?

I hope this wasn't just to spite kg. Based upon kg's weird post, that's probably what he thinks.

Easy choice.

As underrated of a superstar as there has ever been in the league.

No holes in his game. Amazing on offense, just as good on defense, and most nights he was, low key, the toughest SOB on the floor.

And you knew he was going to play every single day. Every. Day.

???
Don't have to know me much, to know Stocktons an automatic lock in almost any convo.
DL nails most of the particulars for me.
I loved when people doubted him or tried to treat him like a little man.
He was one of the few small guys that people did not F with.

He was also the most unselfish guy I've ever seen. He could've scored 20PPG without breathing hard. But he was all about making sure the other 4 guys on the court got as easy of looks as they could get.

Yup. And he was subtle jabbing you with those elbows when he'd set screens.

Unlike Malone with that damn kick (often to the groin) on his running jump shot.

The bottom line is that Stockton was that guy that made everyone around him better, while being whatever his team needed him to be every game. Not even close between him and Malone. I could see the Jazz having the same level of success or better with a number of PF from that era. I can't say the same about Malone and a wide variety of PG from the same time.

Stockton was very good. Malone was flat out dominant. I think it's cool to say Stockton was better, but he wasn't even in Malone's class. They helped each other, but Malone was by far the better of the two. Is Malone still second in all time scoring? I forget.

I would take Stockton.

Looks like you're on Malone Island, kg.

Yep it is the cool stance to say Stockton. I knew that coming in. The stats say Malone. I used to watch those Jazz teams every single chance I had. Both great and helped each other.

Well the good news is I bet Malone Island is a lot nicer than Leidner Island.

LOL. I don't care about being on an Island. Were you on Mitch Leidner Island? I just checked the career stats and of course the one significant thing Stockton did better than Malone was Assists. Besides Malone being the second leading scorer in NBA history with much thanks to Stockton the advanced stats have Malone significantly better in PER and WS.
EESPN ranked the top players in order and Karl Malone was at 16 Stockton at 19 so based on that you can flip a coin.

No, Justin Gaard was the mayor and here is the other population:

I guess it was a pretty good question to discuss here.

IMO, the most underrated player ever.

NBA All-Time Assists and Steals leader.

Stockton has 3700 more assists than the player with the second most assists. Let that one sink in.

Unselfish in every aspect of the game. Best G pick setter I have ever seen play.
Controlled the game on both ends. Never looked for his first.
Low-key, quiet, no endorsements, team-first, superstar player. All substance, no flash. He could have been flashy and less unselfish, but he was all about winning and putting teammates in a position to succeed. The ultimate professional. The ultimate teammate.

The most durable player to ever play in the NBA.

Sort of begs the question....would Stockton have been so tough without Malone behind him?

That I don’t know.
For all we know, if they played against each other, maybe Stockton tries set a screen on Malone and breaks his collar bone and is never healthy?

Anyways, I go Malone.
I pair him up with a very good point guard and I don’t miss a beat.

And I love Stockton.

Pair Stockton with another good PF and they don't miss a beat. I'm with David and JT. Stockton is the most chronically underrated player in NBA history. He is the ultimate, elevate everyone around him player, while playing a dominant individual game.
