The Strib reported that our new POBO has had sessions with Saunders over 3 days. Looks like more than an exit interview and a ton more than most coaching candidates receive. If Saunders does not get the job, its not like he wasn't given a fair chance to earn it. For the Wolves, I believe that the D League is going to be extremely import for the Wolves. Who knows.

I think the opposite. Supposedly he is expected to make a decision in 7-10 days and he hasn't scheduled interviews with other coaching candidates. I think its likely near a done deal.

And I think Rosas is probably OK with Ryan because he's going to be one of the more "moldable" candidates. Ryan doesn't have any kind of identity as a HC. He's never installed an offensive or defensive system. He's never been more than a 4th assistant before getting the interim job. So my guess is Rosas thinks he can push Ryan into being the type of coach he's looking for.

I think you're right, DL. My concern? I'm just not convinced Ryan is all that bright -- it's probably unfair, but I see and hear "kinda-dumb jock" far more than "smart/insightful coach." He's a great relationship guy, no doubt, but does he have the analytical chops to gain a consistent strategic advantage?

I see a lot of that too. He's so much like his dad, but without the level of charisma that Flip could display.

I did not know what the time frame is on the coach, but the sooner the better, all around. I am sure Saunders would take a one year deal. He never had to master being smooth. This team need to be taught the basics. While there has been flaws as head coaches, they pale in comparison to POBO.

No coach will take a 1 year deal. I don't see it being offered or accepted.

You can't start a guy out as a "lame duck". I'd be shocked if its anything less than 3 years (but I'll also be shocked if he isn't one of the 5 lowest paid HCs in the league as well).

A one year coaching deal is not reality. My guess is that Rosas has agreed to give Ryan every consideration. That's probably why is spending so much time with him. He probably wants to get a feel for whether or not Saunders can coach in a way that matches his vision for the team. Rosas is hard core about having a foundation based in analytics. If he doesn't think young Ryan is the guy at this point, I don't believe Glen will compel Rosas to keep him as HC. I could see a scenario where he goes a different direction with a HC, while mapping out a strategy to help Ryan be one some day.

It's to Rosas' benefit to hold extensive 'inteterews' with Saunders even if he doesn't end up hiring him. Saunders with his best effort to impress, will lay out in detail all that he has observed this year, giving Rosas insight to what happened before he got here.

Do you guys think Rosas will want to run a system similar to Houston's?

Absolutely.

He's been a big part of the Rockets as an organization (G-League on up) being at the forefront of shooting 3s and in the paint and eliminating as many bad shots as possible.

How would you reshape the roster to best implement new system?

No idea. We have few assets and a number of bad contracts.

Its going to have to be adding players around the edges, hopefully finding a gem or two and playing the current guys differently.

Wiggins is a prime example.

He's not a good 3pt shooter, but he scored more efficiently from outside the arc than anywhere else outside of 3 feet.

Just last year alone if he kept all his %s the same, but turned all his midrange and long 2s into 3s, the Wolves would've scored over 100 more points on the year.

I think Saunders needs to audition a season before getting locked in to a HC position. Is it possible to give him a 3-4 year deal with only the first guaranteed? We can even give him incentives based on performance that would than guarantee the 2nd year?

What are you willing to give up to move him?

My guess is Rosas is going to hang onto him for at least a year and just hope we did a super shitty job developing him.

Yep he'll give Wiggins a year to conform to the 'Houston' model. Mostly because it would be very hard to move him right now, so why not try to get through to him.

And yes Rosas does seem committed to Houston style. He said that in so many words on Kfan. Said Saunders would get serious consideration but hard questions would be asked about style and philosophy.

I heard that as meaning the first question would be "What's the deal with Wiggins 19 foot jumpers and what do you intend to do about it?"

I'm not a Wiggins fan, but the Wolves brain trust doing a lousy job of developing him is very plausible.

They've done him no favors, but its mostly on Wigs.

Many (most?) great players have bad coaches during their developmental years, as most get stuck on bad teams when they're drafted.

Good players develop despite bad coaching. Look at Giannis. He was unplayable as a rookie because he was so raw and needed to add so much strength. And every year he came back significantly better/more skilled and stronger. And before this season with Bud, he's had awful coaching.

If the Wolves get the #1 pick, they will have a dilemma because I can't see Zion playing with KAT. We'd have to think about taking Ja Morant.

What? No. They'd be fantastic together. And even setting aside who'd play well with who, when you have the number one pick and there is a choice who's clearly head and shoulders above everyone else, you take him. Worry about lineups later.

You could take Zion and trade KAT.

Or you could trade down to #2 or #3 and get your guy, plus add another piece in that trade.

I think KAT has to be the guy. He's shown that he doesn't like sharing the spotlight. Drafting Zion wouldn't even be sharing the spotlight anymore....it would be handing it over completely. If you guys don't see that as at least a very likely scenario, I think you're delusional.

Dead on. My hope is that there is another level to Wiggins that can be achieved with better coaching. He will never play up to his contract, but maybe they can make him good enough to unload.

Sounds like Chris Finch is the front-runner for the Wolves coaching job. I don't know anything about him.

CHICAGO -- New Minnesota Timberwolves president of basketball operations Gersson Rosas plans to interview candidates for the franchise's head-coaching job this week, including Miami Heat assistant Juwan Howard and Portland Trail Blazers assistant David Vanterpool, league sources told ESPN.

Interim coach Ryan Saunders will remain a prominent candidate in Minnesota's coaching search, but Rosas plans to engage in a process with outside candidates before formalizing a decision on a new head coach, league sources said.

Where did that come from? I didn't even know we were interviewing anybody else. I would guess if we know nothing about him he must be a lead assistant from another successful team. Houston perhaps?

Thank goodness. We needed to at least interview other candidates. Portland assistant sounds good to me. Miami doesn't.

I would have no problem drafting Zion. Seems like an enforcer to me and we've needed one ever since Pek was forced to retire.
