We got him!!!

Spielman is now enterin his comfort zone thinking he has the oline fixed.

Next goal is to trade back far enough to get as many 7th rders as possible.

Nice. Spielman may not want to soil his invaluable 7th rounders with OL.

We have to add bodies at some point ... Outside of the fact the Jets signed Compton and let Bulldozier walk (is there any doubt if they liked him at all they would have done anything to keep him from us?), he looks a lot like Andrews, Jones, and Witzmann on paper.

That's right. There are kickers to be drafted. Oh wait, those get taken in the 5th round.

I imagine you typing that with rancorous sarcasm ... but accoding to twitter, ST Coach Meatloaf is traversing the continent working out kickers. A late round practice squadder may be in the plan to outlive Bailey’s one yr contract.

Bailey's not very good, anyway. At least he wasn't last year. Forbath performed quite a bit better during his stint as a Viking. Not clear to me they have a sound strategy regarding kickers.

#Vikings sign former AAF safety Durron Smith according to the team’s official website.

Arif Hasan@ArifHasanNFL
I called Derron Smith the likely best defender in that league and I think he ended up with the top PFF grade among defenders, too. Three interceptions and an additional five pass breakups, but he also had two picks taken away by penalties he didn't commit.

Vikings Sign CB Duke Thomas and S Derron Smith

Thomas had a team-high 22 tackles with an interception and a fumble recovery for the Commanders.

Thomas went undrafted out of Texas in 2016 and spent that offseason with the Houston Texans. He was then on Philadelphia and San Francisco’s practice squad in 2016.

Thomas missed the 2017 season with an injury and spent time in the Canadian Football League on Toronto’s practice squad in 2018. He then joined San Antonio in the AAF.

He was a two-time All-Big 12 Honorable Mention for his play with the Longhorns. Thomas played in 51 games with 35 starts and had seven collegiate interceptions.

The draft is going to be anti climactic at this point.

Well, it's not like getting AC and Zimmerman from the defunct USFl, but it will do.

regarding both smith and thomas....

Chris Tomasson@christomasson
#Vikings had $2,333,682 cap room before Dakota Dozier deal. If his deal is for minimum of $805,000 with $90,000 in bonuses, he'd qualify for veteran minimum benefit rule & have a cap number of $735,000. If displaces top 51 player making $524,602 Vikings would have $2,123,284 room.

Chris Tomasson@christomasson
The #Vikings really like safety Derron Smith, as evidenced by 2-year deal they gave him. They have a need at safety after losing Andrew Sendejo and George Iloka. He arrived in Cincinnati in 2015, two years after Mike Zimmer left but they were still playing the same defense there.

Smith looks like a ball hawk type safety. Reading up on him, it seems like he never got a chance with the Bengals. 27 years old.

#Vikings to sign Sean Mannion as potential backup to Kirk Cousins. Should be plenty of competition between Mannion and Kyle Sloter for backup job.

I know the media is portraying it as Mannion to back-up, but this IS going to be an open competition between Sloter Mannion ... we've invested too much into Sloter to just whittle away time as a fringe roster player.

We'll see.

\What will probably happen is Sloter will 'lose' the competition but end up starting a few games somewhere next year and look good doing it.

#Vikings are signing QB Sean Mannion, source says. The former #Rams’ third-rounder heads to Minny, where they’re looking for a backup for Kirk Cousins now that Trevor Siemian has signed with the #Jets.

Why groom your own under a top starter when there are the Siemian's and Mannion's of the world.

We got WR Jordan "Sunshine" Taylor coming in for a visit. 6'5" 210.

Peyton Manning once said "Remember his name"

Injuries kept him out last year.

It's good that there is competition and backup quarterbacks get hurt, too, so it's good to have another option if one goes down in training camp.

Unless they decided that we missed the boat on him.

'Missed the boat' as in 'made a mistake on him'?

Possible. But I seriously doubt it. They have continued to groom him steadily, unlike the other developmental flyers Spielman has spun through as GM.

And if he is just the typical plays-preseason-good-only type ... we probably wouldn’t cut the cord until he failed in real playing time. Or got beat out by Mannion, which would probably doom Sloter also.

Sloter should outplay any other backup, should be the #2 QB for the Vikes, maybe even #1, the kid is likely something special.

Forbath minus Priefucker = a solid kicker for the next 8 years.
