#Vikings sign former AAF safety Durron Smith according to the team’s official website.
I called Derron Smith the likely best defender in that league and I think he ended up with the top PFF grade among defenders, too. Three interceptions and an additional five pass breakups, but he also had two picks taken away by penalties he didn't commit.
Vikings Sign CB Duke Thomas and S Derron Smith
Thomas had a team-high 22 tackles with an interception and a fumble recovery for the Commanders.
Thomas went undrafted out of Texas in 2016 and spent that offseason with the Houston Texans. He was then on Philadelphia and San Francisco’s practice squad in 2016.
Thomas missed the 2017 season with an injury and spent time in the Canadian Football League on Toronto’s practice squad in 2018. He then joined San Antonio in the AAF.
He was a two-time All-Big 12 Honorable Mention for his play with the Longhorns. Thomas played in 51 games with 35 starts and had seven collegiate interceptions.
Well, it's not like getting AC and Zimmerman from the defunct USFl, but it will do.
regarding both smith and thomas....
#Vikings had $2,333,682 cap room before Dakota Dozier deal. If his deal is for minimum of $805,000 with $90,000 in bonuses, he'd qualify for veteran minimum benefit rule & have a cap number of $735,000. If displaces top 51 player making $524,602 Vikings would have $2,123,284 room.
The #Vikings really like safety Derron Smith, as evidenced by 2-year deal they gave him. They have a need at safety after losing Andrew Sendejo and George Iloka. He arrived in Cincinnati in 2015, two years after Mike Zimmer left but they were still playing the same defense there.
