Will Thibs get the Knicks coaching job?

Oof

Dolan has proven time and again how to be a bad owner.

Shams:

The National Basketball Players Association held a call with its Board and Player Representatives on Friday afternoon, and approved the NBA’s 22-team format for the resumption of the 2019-20 season.

The NBA is planning to restart its season on July 31 at the Walt Disney World resort just outside of Orlando.

The NBPA announced the vote results, saying also that various details remain to be negotiated. Several other aspects of the NBA’s return were discussed, which The Athletic learned via sources:

– A plan to play 2-to-3 exhibition games before regular season

– 1,600 maximum people on campus

– Coronavirus testing every day; minimum seven days of quarantine for a player who tests positive

– Players and family must stay inside the bubble; families can enter after the first round

– If a player contracts the virus, the NBA says they plan to continue playing

– The NBPA told players 2020-21 season starting on Dec. 1 is “unlikely” and plans to negotiate the date

– NBPA will conduct coronavirus testing every night, likely mouth swabs/light nasal swabs and not the full invasive nasal swab

– Minimum seven days quarantine for a player if positive.

– There could be crowd noise via NBA 2K video game sounds, but the NBA and NBPA is still discussing creative opportunities

– Players are expected to return to full paychecks this summer, after taking a 25 percent reduction in May

– Family limit for NBA players in Orlando: Three people, with some exceptions.

– There is a proposed 35-person travel party limit

– There is an expected three-hour practice window for teams, with two courts and weight rooms in the convention center

The NBPA also informed players that they will not be blood tested while in Orlando to resume the season — such as for materials that fall in the anti-drug policy.

On Thursday, the NBA’s Board of Governors voted to approve the 22-team format. The NBA and NBPA will continue discussions on health and safety protocols and negotiations over the 2020-21 season in the weeks ahead.

Returning to full paychecks for the players is the big deal. Why won't MLB owners agree to do the same?

Returning to full paychecks for the players is the big deal. Why won't MLB owners agree to do the same?

As was pointed out in the baseball thread, player contracts are paid for the regular season, not the playoffs. The NBA had already played the majority of their season in front crowds, generating ticket revenues and concessions and arena advertising revenues.

MLB has't started their season and when they do, it will be in an empty ballpark, generating no revenues.

Sources: As NBA and NBPA are finalizing terms on return-to-play plan today, there’s a faction of players discussing as a group whether restarting season in the Orlando bubble is a good idea. Several dozen players participated in a conference call in last 24 hours to discuss it.

The NBA and NBPA are expected to agree on a provision that wouldn't require players to restart the season, nor subject them to discipline for staying home, sources tell ESPN. The players would lose a portion of salary for those games missed.

I'm really glad the Wolves aren't part of this. The NBA is bringing WAY more people than necessary to a place that is absolutely spiking every day with new cases.

Shams:
Sources: NBA teams have been informed of required positions for 35-person traveling party: athletic trainer; strength/conditioning coach; equipment manager; team security official.

Each team can include a player’s private personal trainer, massage therapist, or security.

Not to mention all the "amenities"

In NBA's ORL campus:

- Hotel amenities: players-only lounge (NBA 2K, TVs, gaming), pool/trails, barbers, manicurists, pedicurists
- 24-hour VIP concierge
- Daily entertainment: Movie screenings, DJ sets, video games, ping pong, pool, lawn games
- Players can attend other games

I like the NBA's plan but like you mentioned being in Florida might be the absolute worse place right now.

The players should lose 100% of their salary for games missed. They are choosing not to play them and the league is being fully supportive of that choice.

With regular testing and being sequestered it should be quite safe. Of players who have tested positive so far has even one had more than a mild cold?

Dāvis Bertāns is sitting out the "restarted" season.

That's a big help for us as the Wizards are really the only team that could possibly knock the Nets out of the Playoffs and thus defer the draft pick owed to us.

It seems quite unlikely that the Nets will miss the playoffs. Even with Jordan and possibly Diwiddie out.

The Magic would have to stay ahead of Brooklyn, and the Wizards would need to makeup 3 games over 8 games played just to force a play-in chance.

quote:

All 22 teams in the Orlando bubble will play eight regular-season games to finish off the 2019-20 season. If the eighth seed has a four-game lead in the standings, they advance directly to the playoffs, where they’ll face the No. 1 overall seed. If the ninth-place team is within three and a half games, there is a play-in tournament of sorts between the eighth and ninth-place team.

Under the rules for this season, the eighth seed has a double-elimination, while the ninth seed has a single elimination. If No. 8 wins game one, they advance. If No. 9 wins Game 1, they’ll play a second game, with the winner moving on to face the No. 1 overall seed on Aug. 15-16.

MINNESOTA TIMBERWOLVES RETAIN RAINE TO EXPLORE SALE OF NBA FRANCHISE

The Minnesota Timberwolves are for sale.

Billionaire owner Glen Taylor has retained The Raine Group to sell the franchise he’s owned since 1995, according to three people with direct knowledge of the matter. There are several parties who have bid on the team, two of the people said. A deal could be completed within a month, one of the people said.

Taylor, who bought the team for about $88 million, didn’t want a public auction and instead opted to ask Raine to find a buyer without the usual fanfare that accompanies a franchise sale, said the people, who were granted anonymity because the matter is private. The sale isn’t related to financial hardship created by the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the people said.

The 79-year-old Taylor, chairman of Mankato, Minnesota-based Taylor Corporation, has a net worth of about $3 billion.

Colin Neville, a partner at Raine, declined to comment. Timberwolves spokesmen didn’t immediately return emails or calls seeking comment on the sale.

Taylor is seeking at least $1.2 billion for the franchise that Forbes says is worth $1.38 billion, one of the people said.

The Timberwolves have made the playoffs just once in the past 15 seasons. They were averaging 15,066 fans a game at the Target Center before the regular season was halted, placing them last in the 30-team National Basketball Association.

Taylor is a former chairman of the NBA Board of Governors, which is comprised of one representative —usually the owner—from each club.

Raine has extensive experience in sports.

FIFA, soccer’s global governing body, tapped the firm to help raise capital for the World Cup. Raine last year brokered the $500 million deal.

Last year, Raine orchestrated Silver Lake’s $500 million investment into the parent of English Premier League team Manchester City.

Glen has listened to feelers off & on for many yrs. He's been more open than Becky = the word. But this time has a different real feel to it. The reporter, @soshnick, is very plugged in on the business side of sports. There was some buzz of $1.4B offer in the Fall. #Timberwolves

Please, please, please, please let this happen. It has been the heartfelt belief of most of us in here that this franchise will never amount to anything as long as Taylor owns it.

I don't know. How much better off would we have been if it had been the New Orleans Wolves all those years ago?

I like the idea of Garnett being involved.

He loves Minnesota and honestly wants the franchise to stay in there.

Fortunately he has nowhere near the money to be the majority shareholder, and anyone that wants to buy an NBA team likely has too much ego to take a backseat to a minority shareholder. So, its almost guaranteed that he'd have no final say in decision making - which is a very, very good thing.

I'm sure’d have a voice in the room, he’d be a significant face of the franchise and he’d add legitimacy to the ownership group.

I talked to Glen for 15ish minutes earlier this hour. We'll have a sound byte on @KSTP at 6:55. He did mention some groups talking to him about remaining on, thus he can help protect his guys in the organization. Will post full chat when editing computer frees up. #Timberwolves
