One glimmer of hope for the season.

CHICAGO — The Major League Baseball postseason will be expanded from 10 teams to 16 teams in 2020 once the owners officially ratify the deal before Thursday night’s season-opener, according to three high-ranking officials with knowledge of the agreement.

The officials spoke to USA TODAY Sports on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

MLB and the union agreed on the deal Thursday afternoon, guaranteeing a $50 million player pool.

The new playoff format will feature a best-of-three series in the first round instead of a sudden-death wild-card game. The top two teams in each division will qualify for the postseason – with the two other best teams in each league filling out the 16-team pool.

The winners of the first round will advance to the best-of-five division series and traditional best of seven League Championship Series and World Series.

Of course. Money grab. Oh well. Whatever. Let's give the Marlins a shot!

16 Team playoffs is idiotic. It makes the season pretty much pointless.

Watching the Giants-Dodgers game. How do I train myself to ignore those cardboard cutouts behind homeplate? I thought they would only be down the lines.

By expanding the playoffs to 16 teams, MLB ruined the one built-in advantage they had with a shorter season. The importance of each game just dropped off a cliff.

A team could go 58-2 and lose two out of three games in the first round and be out.

Yeah, now you're gonna have sub-.500 teams in the playoffs that will have the opportunity to do that.

Beating the Indians or White Sox for 1st place in the division is close to meaningless. One or the other will also get in. Likely the Indians. Which sucks, if we beat them out fair and square in the regular season. Hell, they both might make it. They have the advantage of playing the Tigers, Royals and Pirates.

Here's a nice little summary of how the playoffs will work:

https://www.mlb.com/news/mlb-announces-expanded-playoffs-for-2020

The best news I see is that the first round 3-game series will all be played at the home stadium of the higher seeded team.

It shouldn't surprise anyone that MLB went to a 16 team playoff. They lost a ton of revenue this year.

I'd like to see them play fewer regular season games and a 16 team playoff starting in mid August on a permanent basis. There would be more competition, more meaningful games and way fewer teams selling off their good players. You eliminate a meaningless month where the playoffs are pretty well set and teams are auditioning minor leaguers.

I wouldn't want my team eliminated by mid-August. It would suck for those fans. Bad idea.

So we have this beautiful ballpark, actually many beautiful ballparks, some in areas with crappy winters and springs. And we're gonna let those ballparks sit empty for a good portion of the summer and early fall, when weather is the best, but "suffer" thru sitting thru miserable weather in April? This is not a good idea at all.

A #1 seed being taking out by an #8 seed in a two-out-of-three - what could suck worse than that to end a season?

In a 162 game season more than half the teams are eliminated by Aug1. Their fans get the joy of riding out 2 months of meaningless games. My plan is a great idea. Your resistance to it is dumb.

I don't disagree, but make the first round 5 games instead of 3.

Salary cap too please.

The timing could be argued but the idea of a shorter season and a longer playoff isn't bad.

Start the Season May 1. End of season Aug 31. Playoffs done by mid October. Play 100 games in 123 days. 1 week off for All Start during 4th of July week.

September weather is great baseball weather for fans in attendance. My favorite games of the year. Every MLB fan deserves to attend games in September.

Any proposal that significantly cuts the number of regular season games is a non-starter because teams will not want to give up revenue and get nothing in return. It is not like players are going to agree to cut their salaries, so the owners would just make less revenue and have close to the same expenses. Not happening.

A small cut in regular season games and an increase in playoff games could happen though as playoff games are far more valuable. It is more likely they keep 162 games and add playoff games and the players get a bigger playoff cut and both sides make more money.
