There is no Cale Makar below the 3rd pick, in any draft.
We'd never get that lucky

This 9 pick will be the highest since we took Dumba at #7
Mehhhh.

There's basically a couple difference-makers per draft
We are outside that realm again

Cale was a #4 pick. The guy writing the scouting report considered him to be another Cale Makar. It wasn't my opinion, but if he is then whoever gets him made a good pick.

Ek is not Koivu II. He plays with more speed and aggression than Koivu ever did.

A little more speed and aggression that Koivu, but otherwise he is pretty much the same defensive center that will never get you more than 20 goals in a season. I agree we don't need another lock down center. We need a true #1 center that can score and dish out assists to his wingers, not more 200 ft, solid 2-way centers that will only get you 10-15 goals a season and belongs on a checking line.

A LOT more speed and Mikko was only aggressive if somebody like Landaskog pissed him off. Ek is a flat out non stop agitator. He plays with an edge and even some nasty. We'll see where his offensive game winds up. I think he has a lot more upside there than Mikko.

Where I hold out hope is that this is being built up as a historically good draft class.

You can also get difference makers outside the first picks. Vancouver took Brock Boser a few picks after we took Ek.

Meant to bring him up, but as a part of my "get the best FAs available" post
Boeser is exactly the type of player we need to target, as was TJ Oshie
When they are relevant, not after.

Ok, below a #4 (if that's what Makar was)

My point is we never suck enough to be in the top 3 picks, so what we get may help in 5-6 years?
The draft isn't turning this team around in a hurry.
You only do that when you suck enough to get the difference-makers.
The Avs are an example of bottoming out and now reaping the rewards.
I probably should take a couple years off, and let the Wild suck. But I figure we'd still F it up.

I remember the last time we picked #4. We took the great Benoit Pouliot.

I'm hoping for a break with Wild tradition and drafting some guys that are actually worth waiting for. Guerin brought in Judd Brackett to head amateur scouting. Brackett is alleged to be a super scout. His picks include the afore mentioned Brock Boeser, All-star Defender Quinn Hughes, Vasily Podkolzin, Nils Höglander and Elias Pettersson.

Sounds good Tim
Lets hope for a different direction

Can't say sucking on purpose helps either in the long run
Toronto and Edmonton have F-ed things up in that regard
Such a crapshoot and so hard to find the right pieces.
St Louis probably our best example to follow
Plug away, find tougher, meaner executives and players, and plug away until your magic season falls into your lap.
But I'm running out of time.
(just my usual yearly woe-is-us routine here, nothing to see, move on)

Who gets lopped off this year? Besides Koivu?

Are Suter and Parise gone?

Oh no. Still time on those contracts
I'm encouraged by Guerins Dubnyk talk
He's the first guy in awhile who isn't saying "we have to make him work, he's under contract"
Those days are gone in ML sports. Time for us to get with it.
Some big decisions to make
Zuccarello did nothing, in the big picture, for us.
Staal was rewarded for being a good soldier, but has reverted to skiing downhill again
Foligno has earned some loyalty imo Hartman a usable guy but needs to be cheap
Rask, no. Galchenyuk, no. Until we turn a corner these short tryouts need to stay just that.

I think Mikko is gone, whether he decides to retire or not. Guerin named getting faster at center as one of season priorities and that ain't happening with Mikko in teh lineup.

He also damn near unloaded Parise and I wouldn't be surprised if he takes another shot at it. There is a potential salary cap disaster for the Wild if they were to trade Parise and or Suter and they decided to retire early. There would be a huge cap hit to the team that signed those players in first place.

Sounds like a lot of turnover, and work to make new parts fit in the $ scheme of things.

Agreed Ed

Our lonely eyes turn to you Mr Guerin
Take your shot at this mess

We've got some innings-eaters like Spurg locked up
But tons of decisions
As Sweens said, have to really look at any deal we can make
Is Dumba ever an answer to any question for us? I don't think so
Brodin hasn't changed our outlook
The Kunin Sturm types seem a dime a dozen
Fiala is certainly one to fill in around, maybe

Here is what I like about Guerin; after years of hearing Fletch and then Fenton feeding us "we are very close ... the roster just needs a couple of tweaks ...", we now have Guerin saying ... "We haven’t had success here. Things need to get better. That’s just the way it is.”

You want brutal, honest assessment ... “A No. 1 center is very tough to come by. I don’t see one, to be honest with you, in the pipeline. It’s something that we’re hoping somebody can turn into. But you don’t know.”

or

“I was disappointed in the goaltending this year. Al had a tremendous year and Devan had an off year, and it needs to be better. That’s just the way it is. And if I told you anything different, I’d be lying to you. It was not a strong point for us... It just has to be better flat out. So, I can’t promise anybody a spot.”

You can't fix problems if you can't say what they are. Guerin has no problem saying what they are. He is not interested in trying to sell us chicken shit as chicken salad.

Exactly
Its about honestly evaluating what you have and not basing it on making sure contracts are fulfilled

Love what he means about Stalock
He sees what we do
he DID have a good year, for a back up
Dubnyk and his fans are of course rallying around that, for the wrong reason "see? Hes not happy with Stalock either."
NOT true. Stalock is what he is supposed to be. Dubnyk is the issue and needs to be moved on from.
I see the latest excuse by the media is to lay it all at the goalie issue and that is not right either.
We could have had Tretiak at his best and we still lose to the Canucks.
Its nice to have a guy in charge finally who just sees truth, not made-up stories made to fit agendas.

Not sure you can find any takers for Suter or Zach. With those boat anchor contracts you are pretty much forced to roll Yahtzee in the draft, several times.

Guerin came within a whisker of moving Zach to New Jersey at the deadline. It would not surprise me at all if he found a way to move him in the off-season.

It's official. We are not getting Pittsburgh's pick until next year. It's really not a surprise at all. Their embarrassing playoff left them with #15 overall this year instead of #24.

They have had two embarrassing playoffs in row now. With their core another year older, I'm hoping for another poor season out of them and an added top 20 or better 1st rounder next year for us.
