After 5 minutes last night, it looked like the Wild would end up scoring 4 goals. Of course, in the first two games you would have assume a 'L' after two periods.

I watched the first 2 periods last night and was seeing flashbacks of the last few years.
Control the play and get numerous great chances in the first period and come up empty because we can't finish. Same old, same old Wild flashback..... 0 for 16 on the powerless play.

Gotta give a lot of the credit for the shutout last night to the Ducks' goalie. He was definitely on his game and, according to the broadcast, has been a difficult win for the Wild.

Now, as for the 0 for 16 on the power play? Well that's just our lot in life as fans of Minnesota sports.

Gibson was good last night, but early on we had a wide open net to shoot at a couple of times and both times the puck went over the net instead of in it. If I had a dollar for every time a Wild player missed an open net I'd be a couple years closer to retirement.

Avalanche trade Cole to Wild for Pateryn
by Josh Wegman Jan 19, 10:31 PM

The Colorado Avalanche traded defenseman Ian Cole to the Minnesota Wild for blue-liner Greg Pateryn, the team announced Tuesday.

Both veteran rearguards are pending unrestricted free agents. Cole carries a cap hit of $4.25 million, while Pateryn's deal holds an annual value of $2.25 million. Colorado is retaining $800,000 of Cole's cap hit, according to Cap Friendly.

Cole, 31, is a veteran of 543 NHL games. He won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Pittsburgh Penguins and is known for his gritty defensive play. His career high in points is just 26 - which he tied last season - but he's also posted strong underlying numbers, accounting for nine goals above replacement in 2019-20, according to Evolving Hockey.

Pateryn is one year younger than Cole, but also far less experienced with 270 NHL games under his belt - and 41 career points. He was worth 3.9 goals above replacement in his last full NHL season in 2018-19. Injuries limited him to just 20 games last season, though.

It's possible the Avalanche made this move to create room in the lineup for rookie Bowen Byram. Colorado was deep on the left side of the blue line with Devon Toews, Ryan Graves, Sam Girard (who had been playing his off side), and Cole. Byram, the No. 4 pick in 2019, now has an easier path to playing time, and the team saves cap space in the process.

Pateryn, a righty, will likely jostle for playing time with Conor Timmins until Erik Johnson returns from injury.

Cole is projected to play on the Wild's third pairing with Carson Soucy. Minnesota already boasted one of the league's best blue lines before adding the experienced depth piece.

Thoughts team?

Don't know much about him but if anyone knows his game (good and bad) it's Guerin!

Yup, we are loaded with 3rd and 4th line type guys and it sounds like a lateral move to me.
Guerin seems to be loading up on guys with a year left on their contracts.
Sounds like we will get to see him tomorrow night since Colorado was in Cali already too.

I like the move a lot. Cole brings an element of big and aggressive that we rarely see on the Wild blue line. He brings an element of thump that our defense needs. Especially in front of the crease. He has also won a couple of cups, which ain't a bad thing.

I can't see anyone giving up a top center for Dumba, even if he starts pumping in goals at the rate he did before his injury. A top line center is probably the hardest thing to find in the NHL. Teams that have them, don't give them up, unless there are extenuating circumstances.

Sure, blow a hole in my pipe dream......

Ok,

I liked Pateryn, but I also like the idea of more grit on the D.

As JJ mentioned, Guerin should know this guy inside/out, and so far that is good enough for me!

PS
Where's SMF?

He's on a sabbatical. Some weird shit went down on the site. Someone created an account and used his information to PM and generally mess with other posters. We deleted the asshole account and its IP address. Hopefully SMF can be persuaded to come back. The forum ain't nearly as good without him.

Sweeney, did you have to give your phone # to SMF?

I should probably get your # in case I need to text you.

Agree with that. He's one of my faves, except for music taste we agree on most things.

Pretty solid effort by Kaapo. The first goal could have been avoided if he had held on to his initial glove save, but all in all, he was pretty solid.

Love the Eriksson Ek / Foligno / Greenway line. I don't think the Wild has ever had a line that can play the heavy game like this one.

Kirill Bill really is the kind of player we rarely see on the Wild.

I will be happier when Fiala gets untracked.

Nope. If it was an inside job, the asshole was savvy enough to create a new account with a different IP.

What's his favorite beer? Maybe we need to bribe him with something tangible.

He's from Southern Minny like myself...So, a "small road trip" to the Iowa border for some Coors might do the trick!

Wild get the win in their first home game of the season to move to 4-1.
Not bad so far, but we haven't played the better teams in the division yet so I have to keep my expectations in check here.
The main thing is this team is fun to watch and has a few guys that make you pay attention when they have the puck on their stick.

The good:

Fiala got his first goal even if it was an empty netter
Zach got his first goal
Eriksson Ek and his line continue to roll
Kappo with his second straight strong outing

The bad:

Talbot developed irritable bowel syndrome and will be out for awhile

The good:

Golden opportunity for young Kappo.

That is the first I have heard of the IBS issue.
Kappo did look good, so this could be his chance to take the reins.

Talbot got a "lower body injury" late in the first, but finished the period. Tried to gut it out, but had to come out early in the second. It's not supposed to be serious, but will probably take awhile to heal.
