ORIGINAL: Karl Juhnke First round. What I think the Vikings will do. What I hope the Vikings do: What they will do: DL/edge * The main topic seems to be OL. Yes that's a perennial need it seems. But I think they go DL/edge. It's been several years now since they've picked DL in the first round. combine that with the nondescript, bland performance of the line last year, combine with Zimmer's focus on defense and I just think it's by far the most likely scenario. They'll figure they can bolster OL later, and get the blue chip DL in round 1. YEs I know there aren't many of them this year, but the Vikings are not drafting very high either, and the may move down more. See disclaimer. So most likely is Michigan guy? What I hope they do: Same. DL/edge. This is one of those years where I'm in agreement. They need a defensive line monster. Yes I know the OL needs help...as always. And I'm usually urging them on to get it. But last year the DL was worse. Yes I know Hunter was hurt. But the ragtag group they limped through the season with last year was pathetic. Near the bottom in sacks. And they didn't pressure or disrupt anybody. The DL is in far worse shape then the OL. * A disclaimer: Having said all that. There is no way trader Rick sits out the 2nd round. It would absolutely kill him. The Vikings 100% will have a second round pick one way or another. So that likely means a trade down? We'll see. Agree and disagree. OL was far worse, and they're getting back both Pierce and Hunter along with the additions of Weatherly and Tomlinson. Wonnum is developing as well. There has been no upgrade for the horrendous IOL, and tackle is far worse with the departure of Reiff. If the Vikes don't go IOL in the first, they'd better be stellar the rest of the way or it could be a very long year. I still say even though nobody talks about it, DL was under the radar worse than OL last year. The reason I say under the radar is, it’s more noticeable when the OL is bad. More immediate. The QB is getting sacked, hurried, running for his life. It’s less visible when the DL is doing poorly because the result is lack of pressure. So you see opposing QBs week after week sitting comfortably in the pocket calmly surveying the field. 2020 was the least disruptive DL the Vikings have had in a long time. And nobody besides a healthy Hunter excites me. All under performing and replaceable. But they're bringing in Pierce, Tomlinson, and Weatherly, getting back Hunter, and have a DE with at least some potential in Wonnum. They can also sign a pass rushing specialist for 15 or so snaps per game while starting Weatherly to have a pretty beastly DL against the run and a decent pass rush. If they draft Paye I'd be annoyed but I'd get it; if they draft Philips I think they're out of their minds to draft someone with such a severe health risk so high for a position where there's not a true, gaping hole, while we have two such holes on the O-line.
