Now that he's no longer a beat reporter, LEN acknowledges what is happening and needs to happen.

https://www.startribune.com/after-dismal-spring-and-2020-seasons-twins-core-four-needs-revival/600040829/

After playing in the 2019 All-Star Game, Polanco slumped to a .658 OPS in 2020 before having offseason surgery to remove a bone spur and chip from his right ankle, the second consecutive offseason surgery on the same ankle. The arrival of Simmons means Polanco will try to rebound as a second baseman.

Kepler looked headed for stardom in 2019 with 36 homers, 90 RBI and a .855 OPS, but he hit .228 with nine homers, 23 RBI and a .760 OPS last summer. Kepler hit .293 against lefties in 2019 but plummeted to .128 last season and is searching for answers.

Coming off these dismal stats, how did these lads respond in camp?

Sano batted .156 in 18 spring training games with 22 strikeouts. He did draw an eight-pitch walk and hit a long home run in one of his final games.

Buxton batted .158 with one homer, one stolen base and 10 strikeouts. But the new muscles look fabulous.

Polanco actually batted .282 with a .391 on-base percentage. Some believe his ankle problems affected his lefthanded hitting the most.

Kepler, in 17 spring training games, batted .067 with two runs, three hits and zero Zoom interview sessions with local media.

Not encouraging numbers for a group of hitters entering their primes, some of the leaders of an offense that was tied for 18th in runs scored in the majors last season.

He's right, ST numbers mean "nothing". If trends continue....

LEN says 93 wins

I would agree IF

several have average/better than average years: Offense, pitching

What will it take to get to 93 wins?

Starting Pitching:

Berrios pitches 200+ innings and gets his ERA back to the mid 3’s.

Maeda repeats last year’s level.

JA Happ & Gig Mike each give us 170+ IP and ERA’s below 4

Get that and the - Schoemaker /Uber/Thorpe/Ober – spot in the rotation will not be such a source of pain. Hopefully one of the young studs forces a promotion.

Bullpen:

Rogers needs to return to 2019 form

Colome & Duffy repeat last year

Johnson works his magic with Gretel

Alcala takes the next step with consistency

Lineup:

BUCK NEEDS TO STAY HEALTHY!!!!!! The Twins win 75% when he is in the lineup and they are a .500 team without him. HE NEEDS TO STAY ON THE FIELD!!!!

Donaldson needs to stay healthy! He is most definitely a spark plug when he plays. Lots of fire in the belly.

Fred Garvin & Max need to be closer to 2019 form. I don’t expect Fred to repeat matching the Bambino for HR/AB, but I expect upper 200’s with pop. Max needs to get his OPS back to the .800 mark

Polanco respond to ankle surgery and position switch. Before the injuries, he was pretty clutch and seemed to be that guy, who situations were never too big for him.

Arraez needs to return to a .300 plus hitter. His high OBP bat provides some continuity between the feast or famine hitters around him.

On of the young bucks needs to force his way back up from AAA and take LF permanently.

Sano? I’ve given up. I really believe he could be something closer to Miguel Cabrera if he would quit cork screwing himself on every swing. When he just relaxes and focuses on barreling the ball, the ball jumps out of the park. His hottest streaks always come when he looks like he is exerting the least effort at the plate. This has been obvious for years, but he seems incapable of change.

Happ/Shoemaker as busts for sure. Like shooting fish in a barrel.

Hill/Bailey all over again.

Hill wasn't a true "bust" but was not worth the $$ and time they invested.

Shoemaker will be off the team by June. I see Jason Marquis all over again.

I'm holding out some hope for Happ. It wasn't long ago he was a pretty solid #2 starter.

Shoemaker is already a bullpen killer. Dobnak probably needs to be held out a couple days prior to his start.

12.1 innings in 4 ST starts.

I guess I'm not as negative on Happ. The last 7 years indicate, he should give us around 170 IP and an ERA around 4 or lower. That's pretty solid from the 4th slot in the rotation.

Donaldson limps around first and he's out of the game.

I have to question Donaldson's professionalism. You need to stretch out a lot and be very limber to be a pro athlete.

Tom Brady is all about stretching, he has played QB in the NFL for 20 years. Donaldson gets hurt jogging.

Concerns
Missing Rosario ability for big hits and RBI
Donaldson ever getting healthy enough to play and produce consistently.
Kepler having another .230 year.
Still wish we had Odor. Not sure how deep our starting pitching will be.
Will need to get some serious offense from our outfield this year. Who will step up?

Proof he didn't push himself hard enough in ST.

It's not the calf muscle. Donaldson tweaked his hammy.

On Donaldson's professionalism, I read one article that said he and team and personal trainers worked all throgh the off season on exercises, stretching and even overhauling the way he runs to try to prevent future calf issues.
