Wow, not surprised with Parise, but a little surprised they didn't give Suter at least another year.

Surprised by that also.

Me three. I was Suter was still playing at a pretty decent level even if had lost a step. At the same time, he was probably our 3rd best blue liner at most.

SoMyFriend texted me that Russo is saying that the Wild are about to buy out both Suter and Parise.

Why didn't he text me?

This was done so they can protect Dumba in the expansion draft.

We have to have somebody better to protect than Dumba don't we?

Quite the day for the Wild eh?
I was surprised when they were both signed way back in 2012, and I'm just as surprised they were both cut at the same time.
The more I think about it, the more sense it makes. We are screwed cap-wise any way we part with them so may as well "rip the band aid off" and be done with it. The culture change in the locker room is now complete I would say.

I wonder who gets the "A"s on their jerseys now. I bet Marcus Foligno is one of them.

Foligno is a no brainer. He was almost selected for the C and he wore the A when Parise was out of the lineup. I'm guessing the other A could go to a stoic veteran like Brodin or talented shit monger like Eriksson Ek.

So the NHLPA agreed to a buyout clause where the player gets less than the value of the contract?

Below is a quote from strib...

Parise and Suter helped turn the Wild into a playoff team, but one that fell short of a championship. They had four seasons to go on their 13-year, $98 million contracts and will receive approximately $6.7 million of the $10 million in salary they were still owed.

Someone like Parise wasn't getting much playing time toward the end of last season. It probably was in his best interest to take the buyout so he could play for another team. I can see how both the player and the union would think that is a good settlement.

An out of the box candidate could be Talbot. The calming influence on and off the ice.

You usually don't see a goalie wearing the C or A. That also assumes they don't leave him unprotected. No doubt, he was our #1 goalie, but I think it would be a foolish mistake to protect him over Kappo.

According to Russo, Suter hung up on Guerin when Billy called to give him the news. I guess the sequence went...

Guerin tried to call Suter, but went to voice mail, so...
Guerin called Parise to tell him he had been bought out. After which...
Parise called Suter to tell him that he (Parise) had been bought out. Suter was consoling Parise when...
Guerin tried Suter again and got through. Broke the news to him and the Diva hung up on Guerin.

Odds are pretty good that discussions have been going on for a while.......Why would Parise need consoling?

LOL.
The country club has been shut down by current management. Don't check back any time soon, unless of course Billy G is fired once Suter gets in touch with his close personal friend, Craig Leipold.

I'm hoping the "Suter hung up on him" thing was a joke. With his declining play, age and that move, would have his rep at a huge disadvantage versus Bill G, IMO.

I also read that the Wild are interested in C Christian Dvorak from the Yotes.

Wouldn't be the worst move depending on what it takes. 4 years at 4.5 million though might be better spent elsewhere.

Here is the snippet from Russo's article on The Athletic.

Suter tried to lift Parise’s spirits. He even told him that funny enough he himself had a missed call from Guerin.

That’s when Guerin suddenly called again. The veteran defenseman answered and was blindsided with the exact same news that he, too, was being bought out of the final four years of his contract.

That call with Guerin wasn’t as lengthy … or as friendly.

Suter, never, ever envisioning that the Wild would actually buy out both contracts at the same time, hung up on the GM.

“These calls are not fun to make,” Guerin said a few hours later at a news conference. “In this position, the chair I’m sitting in, you have to do difficult things.”

I have to agree.
We were screwed cap-wise on the Parise and Suter deals so may as well dump them now and start building with younger, faster kids.
We have a few very solid blocks to build on and now the kids like Rossi, Boldy, and Adison will get a chance to grow instead being stuck behind the old guard.
There may be a few growing pains, but I suspect these kids will impress and improve, so it will be fun to watch.

Can’t pay them all if/when turn into studs. Big priority now is to play them and make the right decision on which ones need to stay to build around and which ones to trade at their ceiling. Not an easy task.
