Day 4 Press Release:

In another attempt to improve the game day experience, the price of a beer will be going down by $2 and smoking pot will be legal on the stadium grounds. If you have to watch a horrific quarterback, at least you'll be able to tie one on in the process and not have to refinance your house on Monday morning.

Ready, GO!

Day 5 Press Release:

Starting in 2022, the Minnesota Vikings will be starting a second broadcast network called Vikings X-Rated (for a $99 seasonal fee). It will be a separate broadcast where the broadcasters are encouraged to say whatever is on their minds during the game. The idea is for broadcasters to express themselves as if they were sitting on their couch at home while watching their quarterback go up in flames.

Ready, GO!

Guess we're not getting a decent GM. Nobody will want to come to a new team missing their 4th round pick.

Obviously our draft pick scenario is not going to dissuade the next candidate. It is, however, my greatest source of aggravation with Spielman. The incessant trading down to the late rounds. Spielman would cite Bill Belichick as another exec who would trade down. What he never grasped was that Belichick had players in mind or would use those extra picks to trade back up for specific players. Spielman just piled up late round picks and waited to see what fell to those spots.

The other problem is that he put in cap hell. People like to bitch about Cousins contract, but the truth is that there are several overpriced and underperformed contracts on the Vikings.

Cap hell for one year? What am I missing?

Your missing that it hasn't been one year. Every damn year, the Vikings playing around with restructures buyouts and cuts just to keep a mediocre roster intact.

I was talking about what would hamper the next GM, but I see you were more airing gripes about Spielman, and I agree with your criticisms. It would be interesting to compare all Spielman's picks with the consensus top player at the time of the original pick (i.e., no trades) per various "experts" like PFF, Kiper, McShay, etc. After the last few years, I'm guessing Spielman's record is not very good.

From DN:

Top General Manager Candidates
It was somewhat surprising to see the Wilfs fire Rick Spielman as well as Mike Zimmer, so I hadn’t put together a list of some of the top candidates for GM openings this off-season. A list of some top heading coaching candidates is here. Here is a list compiled by Jonathan Jones at cbssports.com. Italics afterward are my [wludford] comments on each candidate. Below are the top candidates from that rather extensive list.

Joe Hortiz, Ravens director of player personnel: He’s been a top lieutenant for Ozzie Newsome and Eric DeCosta for years, and he’s been in this role for seven seasons. Hortiz is very well respected in the college scouting community. If you’re looking to pilfer a GM from the ranks of another organization, none better to pilfer from than the Ravens. They’ve been the best drafting team since Hortiz has been there, and pretty sharp in free agency too. Not sure how much credit Hortiz merits in all that, but he’s certainly learned and worked with a couple great GMs in Ozzie Newsome and Eric DeCosta.

Ed Dodds, Colts assistant GM: Dodds was highly coveted last offseason but had the privilege of waiting for the right job. If the right one opens up this offseason, I’d expect him to be a top candidate. Dodds has earned a strong reputation around the league, but like George Paton did, is waiting for the right opportunity. The Vikings’ GM job could be just that.

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, Browns VP of football operations: He was a hot name last cycle and could very well land a job this time around. Adofo-Mensah has a Wall Street background and excels at the numbers part of this business. Assuming the Vikings retain Rob Brzezinski, they don’t need someone of Adofo-Mensah’s background. They need a guy who’s good at evaluating talent.

Joe Schoen, Bills assistant GM: Among all the names on this list, no one’s name was mentioned more than Schoen’s. Considering the diverse amount of voices and backgrounds cultivated to make this list, that speaks loudly. The right hand of Brandon Beane in Buffalo, Schoen is going to be a GM either this year or next. A leading contender, but is he the best candidate? Maybe.

Dave Ziegler, Patriots director of player personnel: He took on the role of de facto GM with the team after Nick Caserio left for Houston. He totally changed the Pats draft process in 2021 and helped Belichick spend big in free agency. Probably on the rise as a GM candidate as a result, but is that enough of a track record?

presently we are $14.5m over the '22 cap....

we have to cut, or rework the contract of hunter...or, trade or rework the contract of cousins - or do both hunter and cousins....

we'll cut pierce & ham....

rework the contracts of thielen and kendricks....

we'll cut smith and cook next year - it makes little sense to do it this offseason....

the only way i'd cut smith is if we drafted a safety in the 1st or 2nd round that's ready to start....

Taking a quick look at Sportrac - if a new GM came in and traded Cousins and then signed a 1 year stopgap QB (like Ryan Fitzpatrick), and cut Harrison Smith, Michael Pierce, and Danielle Hunter in 2022, then the team would go into 2023 with almost $110 million dollars in cap space. That includes the offense retaining almost all of their current offensive starters - Cook, Thielen, Jefferson, Osborn, O'Neil, Cleveland, Darrisaw. Assuming the new GM has a quality draft in 2022, the team would be in a pretty interesting spot in 2023.

ham's cap hit is $3.5m....we're one of three teams that uses a fullback...I'm cutting ham and replacing him with Bradbury....

Welp, I gotta say I'm pleasantly surprised. I have to admit I had a small amount of fear we'd make no changes to the top and go another year with status quo, or at least that we'd keep Spiels and he'd continue signing bad veteran contracts, making hasty mid-season trades and stockpiling late picks in the draft. I think if you're going to start fresh, they both needed to go and that's what the Wilfs did, cheers!

I've heard links to Lane Kiffen and Josh McDaniels but not much else on the rumor mill. I see the Broncos and Jags are interviewing many of the presumed up and comers and names being thrown around. It'll be interesting to see how many we interview and if there is a theme (offense vs defense, older vs younger, previous experience as a coach vs first timer, etc). There are a lot of interesting names in the GM circles as well. I kind of like those who have had a lot of draft success because that's ultimately what will keep you in the hunt every year. The Diamond guy from the Saints is one of those supposed draft wizards.

In any case, there is some renewed optimism that things will change, hopefully for the better. I can now relax and cheer against the Pack and Cowboys and wait till next year for our beloved Vikes to try and figure this thing out. We need to figure out QB, need some beef in both of the trenches and some CBs that can cover, hopefully in a scheme that isn't so confusing that it can only be described once you experience it. And if anything, hopefully there will be a renewed sense of trust and camaraderie in the locker room between players and coaches this next time around. I'd love to see rookies get a fair shot, kickers not turn to mush, and former good players regress when they're here and return to form when they leave. Culture is what we all make it, but it starts with trust, empathy, openness to change and a drive to work together to achieve something great.

New eyes, no personal ties...

my biggest problem with Spielman was keeping players too long, He was usually on the one year too late, versus one year too early wagon.

didnt like the Cook extension (based on paying too much for running back), hated the smith extension, did not like the Barr signing, KC extension

I was ok with going after kirk, but the extension was dumb. lots of 'easy' cap relief available, although some fans wont like seeing the names go

I cant wait to see what the next step looks like.

Not sure why they would even line up interviews for HC before GM being hired. Cart before the horse.

If this team wants to change..

Getting a GM has to come first..

The GM then picks the HC..

They evaluate the players and coaches that we have and go from there..

I’m pretty sure that the axe is going to chop some cap disasters off the roster, some of these prima donnas either need to put team needs and winning priorities, first, or take thier hunt for money, elsewhere..

This is why I only buy throw back jerseys of ring of honor Vikings.

Who bought a Favrey?..

You have cursed this franchise…

Burn it!!

absolutely not a hero, i do appreciate the support, though

in fact, I failed way too often to be able to convince patients on the importance of good choices. Eventually, I had to step away from direct patient care.

So, much like Zim, I am sorry I was unable to complete my goal, and am looking forward to the next stage!

Doug Pederson is scheduling interview with Bears and will end up interviewing with the Vikings and Broncos as well. Already met with Jacksonville

Are the Wilfs scheduling meetings? Or do we have an asst. GM I don't know about
