Minnesota Wild, Alex Goligoski agree to 2-year contract extension: Sources

The Wild have agreed to a contract extension with defenseman Alex Goligoski, multiple sources tell The Athletic's Michael Russo. The deal is expected to be for two years at a $2 million average annual value.

Goligoski, 36, has two goals and 28 points in 58 games this season, which is his first playing for his home-state team. His plus-minus rating of plus-34 ranks seventh in the league and fourth among defensemen. The Wild signed the Grand Rapids, Minn., native to a one-year, $5 million contract in July.

Goligoski had 25 points in his first 33 games with the Wild but has only three in his past 25 and has been a healthy scratch at times. He was scratched for Sunday’s win over the Avalanche and will be again for Tuesday’s game against the Flyers.

Minnesota is 40-20-4 with 84 points, the third-most in the Western Conference.

REALLY baffled by that move. Golly's play has fallen off a cliff.

A veteran third pair D-man for $2 million a year doesn't sound bad to me. A little surprised by the 2 years tho....

Wild taking care of business against Yeo and Fletcher's Flyers to the tune of 4-0 after 2.
The highlight of the game for the Flyers was Seeler going toe to toe with Deslauriers in the 1st period. I have to admit one of the better fights I have seen this season. Ended in a draw with each patting the other on the head after.

This is true. Been waiting for #mnwild GM Bill Guerin to land in Minnesota, but it's going to be two years at a $2 million AAV, I believe

Dude. Context. Please.

For everyone else wondering what that tweet meant, it was a response to this:

I’m told the @mnwild are closing in on a 2 yr Extension with D Goligoski

It was in the post below it...I meant to combine...Sorry Mr. Perfect.

Even then the two look to be unrelated. Nothing ties them together. I know when I see that we're resting a 37 year-old, my first thought isn't that he's getting an extension.

Just trying to point out that the rest of us aren't privy to the full conversations that you only post half of.

It wasn't done on purpose, again stop with the Mr. Perfect schict--you even did a double down on it.

I was trying to save people having to do what I did - seeking out the original tweet to find the context. And this is like the 3rd time I've had to do that to one of your "half tweets" in the past couple weeks (the last one was a response from Doogie about a player the Vikings were trying to sign - but had no reference to who that player was), so I was just trying to point out that the rest of us didn't have the context that you did.

Lynn even pointed out that she had no idea what your tweet was talking about.

I appreciate the news bites. I really do. But if they leave out the key detail, they aren't so helpful...

It's not about trying to be perfect, just courteous.

Probably the best Hockey song ever.

Wild did to the Canes what used to happen to us all the time...........we were out shot by a large margin but our shots went in the net.
Sure is nice having a star that doesn't need a lot of touches to score, or set up a score.
And Fluery was great in net....was too bad he didn't get a shutout.

And with a goal and an assist, Kaprizov sets the Wild's new single season scoring record. If he scores 4 more goals he will break the team record of 42. With 5 more assists, he breaks the team record of 50.

Yup, Kaprizov is re-writing the record book in his first full, non-Covid season.
I sure am happy that BG locked him up with that new long term deal. The kid is the real deal and a true super star.

Fluery has amazing agility and speedy reflexes for a 37 year old.
He kept us in the game in the 2nd especially.
So far, another Guerin success, we shall see, it seems to have pushed Talbot to another level as well.
All the deadline moves look stellar right now.

Man, before Kulikov scored, he was really getting on my nerves; turnovers, icings, bad positioning, then poof!
Out of the box and he scores a huge goal.
Still would like to see Caleb up for this last push and playoffs.
Addison, that is.

I don't mind a game that starts with two Wild goals in the first minute and a half.

Yup. 2 shots, 2 goals. 3-0 GG’s after 2. Stay out of the box and we should be good.

First minute of the 3rd we run it up to 4-0 before Ov8 finally gets them on the board late.
Another nice road win against a playoff team. Now on to Smashville on Tuesday....that should be another good one.

Correction: Ovi's shot was actually deflected past Cam, so he didn't get the goal.
Still, a 5-1 win over one of the top teams in the East is nice.

Since the trade deadline, the Wild have had the league's best defense, averaging a paltry 1.63 GA/GP in eight games. Goaltending received the brunt of the blame for the slump in February, and it's bounced back in a big way, as opponents have averaged 32 shots per game since the deadline.

Yeap. It's well known that I hated that trade but it's really boosted our tender situation. Lit a fire under Talbot's ass and Fleury has been good.

What a joke. We came out to goon it up and lost 4 fights, gave up 4 PP goals and just basically got our asses handed to us. What were we trying to showcase?

We “sorta” got back in to it by playing hockey but that goon first period doomed us.

Yup, I only watched the first period. That was enough for me. When we try to play goon hockey we embarrass ourselves and get our asses kicked every time. I hope they have finally learned that lesson after last night.

This team has to play hockey. The added toughness was for the purpose of standing up to goon tactics employed by other teams, not make them part of our game. Last night proved that point.

Last night also pointed out a huge deficiency in our team. Our defense can't clear the front of the goal to save their lives. 4 goals on the PP (and yes, Matt, 1 was technically not but Zuc wasn't back in the play yet ), and all had the same thing wrong. A guy right in MAF's grill with no opposition. Hell, the first had Brodin standing right next to the guy like a 2 man screen .

Our system doesn't even try to muscle guys out of the crease. It's maddening.
