Timberwolves showed they can play playoff defense.....

McDaniels, Bev, Ant, Vandy, and Russell is a shutdown lineup...masterful job of subbing in by Finch late (rotated Naz, Beasley in on off possessions). George was awesome. LAC can win the next game and a Kahwi return may make a tough matchup for the Suns.

It is - provided the other team goes small like the Clippers did.

When your two bigs are 6'9, 214 and 6'9, 185 you can easily get overwhelmed with size.

Adding size has to be priority #1 in the offseason.

There must be some worry there as they signed Monroe.....The way Cleveland played the Wolves with Mobley, Love, Allen, and Mark front line mix is a blue print.

I think Monroe was signed as injury insurance more than anything.

He could potentially be useful against a guy like Steven Adams. Cleveland would run him off the floor in a heartbeat.

Ideally we find a defender that is bigger than Vando and has to at least be respected outside of the paint.

KAT is a very good BB player and can be dominant quite often. Playoff basketball however is an entirely different kind of animal.
He looked like a rookie out there much of the time and had trouble adjusting to the physicality of the game. He showed his frustrations with his constant complaining and foolish fouls. Even after getting his 5th foul he charged into and swatted at whomever he was covering. He needs to get his mental game back on track as we will need the best of him to beat Memphis.

I actually was glad when KAT had to sit and Naz could come in for him. It was embarrassing watching KAT act like a spoiled child, you could see even on his drives he lost his mind. I was glad to see Shaq and Barkley rip him he needs it and more. Hopefully someone on the team can tell him his yapper is hurting the team and to just keep it shut from now on. He's so sure he's getting into the minds of the opponent and I think it's mostly just how full of himself he is. That's about as nice as I can put it. He needs to get off that three point line more and put some muscle down low getting rebounds etc. Maybe old school but still beneficial.

Patrick Beverley response to Charles Barkley laughing for him celebrating:

"I said this team was making the playoffs when I got here, I've accomplished that. Now we got more work to do. I don't get why Charles is laughing at us for celebrating, saying we acting like we won a championship. The hell does that round mound chrome dome looking ass know about championship celebrations, I don't see a ring on that finger."

OK, I'm probably not qualified to get this right, maybe some of you more knowledgable souls could chime in, but I felt KAT needed to step out to the 3 pt line more last night. He only took 2 3s. Seems to me KAT was receiving the ball around the Elbow/top of the key and IMMEDIATELY getting double or triple teamed, without KAT having time to pass the ball effectively. My simple analysis would be to move him out further making the immediate extra defenders more difficult. Not sure how connected to all this, but I don't think I saw a TWolve's player cutting to the hoop without the ball before somewhere in the 3rd qtr. Guessing Clippers were packing the paint. Seemed to me KAT was playing into their hands committed to prove he could force a drive into the paint and others were standing around watching.

Clippers have defended us the same way each game this year. They put a smaller guy on KAT and have their center available for an immediate double when the ball goes to him.

They don't even pretend to defend Vando.

One problem for us is, even though KAT is a good passer, he's slow to process when to pass and doesn't make teams pay for the double because of it.

Bingo. This has always been a fault. When he gets the ball he always takes several seconds trying to decide what to do, while everything grinds to a halt. He needs to be more decisive.

That’s the biggest difference between KAT and Jokic.

Jokic has the vision and instincts of a PG and he’s capable of making amazing passes. But 90% of the time he makes the easy pass and he makes it immediately. That’s way more effective than the highlight passes that make for great clips.

Yes Agree on Kat. Just make the simple quick read quick simple pass. Forget the flashy stuff that gets him in trouble.

Most of his flaws are very correctable.

Ja struggled against our size and length this year.

4 games: 20.0 PPG (34/15/79), 5.5 RPG, 6.5 APG, 4.1 TO. 103 ORtg, 122 DRtg, -8.3

While D'Lo feasted on the Grizzlies:

4 games: 31.0 PPG (56/46/79), 3.5 RPG, 6.8 APG, 2.5 TO. 140 ORtg, 118 DRtg, +13.3

Paul George tests positive for COVID. This might make Wolves players ineligible for one or more Memphis games.
EDIT: Probably not. I don't think his teammates have been made ineligible for the play in.

And without George, the Clippers get bounced. As I said, much different team without him. And if they would have had Leonard all year too? They’d be tough.

I have little faith that trend will continue. Would be very confident if it did though.

Good defense by wolves out of the gate. Playoff worthy. 9-2.

And the Towns report. So far, not bad. Better overall play. A couple of minor whines. Unwarranted too. If anything the wolves are getting away with much more physical defensive play. Towns has no complaints.

Stating the obvious here, but nothing like the road team coming in and stealing game 1. Immediately flips the whole series around. This team doesn’t fold. They keep battling.

I was worried when they made that bad clear path call on D'lo. A 4 or 5 point possession would have made it nail biter down to the last second. Morant missed one of the free throws (as KG used to say, "the ball don't lie) and then they got the stop on the inbound. Just a huge moment.

McDaniels and Beasley such X factors. Best Twolves roster outside of WCF roster. Better depth on this roster though.

36 points in first playoff game, played poised and smart, made it look as easy and carefree as shooting some hoops at a playground. Can’t even have a drink legally after the game yet.

Crazy.

Ah, here it is. As you can imagine, had fun writing this one.

That slow, steady beeping sound you hear is the Minnesota Timberwolves registering on the national basketball radar for the first time in more than 15 years. https://minnpost.com/sports/2022/04/the-timberwolves-game-1-win-over-the-grizzlies-wasnt-a-fluke/ by @brittrobson

Ok, I've got time for this now.
Thibs was hired to develop KAT and Wiggins, the #1 overall picks in the draft in successive years. After one season, he decided to impose his old culture by bringing in as many of his trusted players as he could garner.

Those players were contemptuous of the players they, were supposed to rear. You didn't have to an insider to see the schism, especially between Jimmy/Jamal Crawford + KAT. To be clear, at the time KAT was regarded by NBA GMs as one of the most advantageous players to build around

Because he enabled Butler's corrosion and Finch has demonstrated that actually listening to and respecting KAT is a good investment.

Could argue about whether enabling or criticizing KAT has been the more constructive path over the course of his career.

When you are the 8th seed w/2 #1 overall picks, might be nice to use postseason as learning experience, instead of shunting them aside for your old guys. Thibs didn't do that, + Rockets had a gentleman's sweep anyway.

I don't think it is either unfair or "rewriting history" to compare what Finch did w/KAT after a terrible play-in game to get a bounceback performance out of his star big man to the way Thibs coached the same player. Wolves now have a level of relevance they never had under Thibs

Yes, I stand by that. Wolves of 17-18 were built to win immediately a lot more than the Wolves of 21-22, yet could only rise to level where they were given no shot. Wolves might have suffered similar fate w/out stirring 1st 2 postseason games. They *are* more relevant than 17-18

47 wins in that West, with a midseason Butler meniscus tear, and then having to face an extra-great 1st round opponent (65-win Rockets that probably outplayed Curry-Durant GSW in WCF) is such a different set of circumstances than this team’s watered-down season + Grizz opponent
