What will they do with Fiala?

Will Billy finally open his eyes to the reality of Matt Dumba, the Turn Over Machine?

Can we please get the playoffs over and move on to the draft?

Odds are they try and move Fiala.

To me, I'd explore every way to keep him, but it starts with what he wants to be compensated. I'd offer him 7ish mil per, but not close to what KK is making. If he expects that I move him for sure.

I explore moving Dumba and/or Spurge. I don't bring back Flower.

In general, I look to get a little bigger while still trying to get skilled good skating big guys. I'm done with tiny D who can't defend the crease.

It wouldn't surprise me to see both Dumba and Fiala gone this summer.
We have plenty of young D in Iowa that can turn over the puck as well as Dumba....
Fiala is going to want money close to Kirill and that just isn't going to happen, so I don't see him staying.

I think it's wishful thinking to believe Dumbo will get traded. I don't get it. Fletch, Fenton and now Billy are all enamored with the guy.

I can see Fletcher....isn't he the one that drafted him?
Fenton and Billy is beyond me....maybe to keep "Jimmy" happy?
I think the next few years we are going to get young in a real hurry and it should be interesting to see what happens.

I'm sure we are all devastated to hear that the Wild will not sign former 1st round pick Filip Johansson, Paul Fenton's first ever draft choice. That pick was one of the most colossal reaches in NHL history. The Wild thought they outsmarted everyone by taking the next Jonas Brodin. In the end we get a second round compensation pick for him.

From Russo
According to sources, the #mnwild have traded the rights to pending restricted free agent Kevin Fiala to the #lakings for their 2022 first-round pick and University of Minnesota captain Brock Faber

The Los Angeles Kings have acquired the rights to Minnesota Wild forward Kevin Fiala, sources confirm to The Athletic. The Wild will receive a 2022 first-round pick and defenseman Brock Faber in return for the restricted free agent.

Fiala is coming off a career-best season which saw him score 33 goals and 85 points in 82 games. In six playoff games against the St. Louis Blues, Fiala chipped in three assists. The 25-year-old played last season on a one-year, $5.1 million contract that was agreed upon following an arbitration hearing last summer.

The Swiss-born forward is on his third team since being drafted 11th by the Nashville Predators in the 2014 NHL Draft. In 419 career NHL games, Fiala has 124 goals and 282 points.

This is a developing story. More to come.

Ughhhh. only the 19th pick.

Faber is a decent prospect but he's not big for a D, not a great skater ect...He probably, at best, a 3rd pair guy (which is a great career in the NHL but I think we could have gotten more).

Seriously? Faber is an excellent skater, not quite at the Brodin level, but he is very smooth and good defensively.
I can see him taking Dumba's spot next season and Addison being traded since he is on the smaller side.

We were up against the cap and everybody knew it. Just getting a 1st rounder and a top pick is a win in my book.
They are saying on Twitter that the Kings and Fiala have agreed to just under $8 million for 7 years.....tall cotton that we couldn't afford for sure.

I hate the talent we are giving up for the talent we have coming back. As for the business side I know nothing about that.

We were expecting it, but I hate that we're losing Fiala. I don't know enough about the Faber to even ponder the deal. I just liked what Fiala brought to our team.

I hate losing Fiala, but the return is pretty solid. Faber has a good upside. Great skater, high IQ player and while he isn't a beast, 6'0 and 190 lbs isn't exactly a runt for a 19 year old. Having two firsts and 2 seconds gives them some maneuverability.

I read some vague Russo takes. He knows something is in the works for a center and us having 2 1sts and 2 2nds in the next draft. He didn't say whether it was drafting a top 10 center or trading picks for one.

Plus he vaguely mentioned the defensemen we are stacking up and the 3 playing for US Hockey.

He categorized them as B+ prospects (Carson Lambos, Calen Addison) and B grade guys (Jack Pert, Ryan O' Rourke, Dameon Hunt)

So on Dan's show he mentioned that all those defenseman logically would go in a trade as there isn't room on the roster.

Lots of vague talk which makes me think something more will happen around the trade.

Also Russo and Dan commented on Guerin's rant earlier about Fiala's 3 months of being a stud versus Dumba as to who to keep and both think that Dumba gone too unless he signs for something a lot cheaper.

I keep hearing people talking about trading for a top center and wonder if they really have any clue....
The Wild are currently in cap hell and DO NOT have the money to sign any top center even if they could trade for one.
If they had the cap space they would have signed Fiala. The Wild are going to be going with young players on ELC's for the next 3 years.
The only way they get a top center is if they can do some trade ups in the draft and get one on an ELC.

I think his assessment that all of those defensemen have to go is pretty lazy and stupid. Addison is only one who is ready to play in the NHL and they can easily move a vet to make room for him. Dumbo and Kulikov are both in the final years of their contracts.

Among the topics I discussed with SMF yesterday

-Guys who score 30+ goals and average over a point a game are damn hard to find, no matter what Souhan says.

-Trade Dumbo (no brainer)

-Trade Spurgeon. Yes even SMF is ready to move his favorite player. Not the player he used to be and has a very expensive contract.

-We both love Ryan Hartman, but he is no way, no how a #1 center. They NEED to address this.

-All in all Billy is kind of losing his shine with us.

-And for God's sake, don't bring back Flower.

The draft is only a few days away. Let's see if we can generate some interest if not discussion. Here are a few names being mocked to the Wild on the 7th/

Luca Del Bel Belluz, C, Mississauga Steelheads (OHL)

The 6-1 175 lb Luca Del Bel Belluz had 30 goals, 46 assists, 86 points, and a +23 +/- ratio in 2021-2022 dominating the OHL regular season including 15 goals, 12 assists, and 27 points on the power play as a first line center. He finished third among players in the Weave Agility drill with the Puck in the 2022 CHL Prospects Game combine drill. Luca Del Bel Belluz had 1 goal, 3 assists, and 4 points in 10 games during the 2022 OHL Playoffs.

Luca Del Bel Belluz has the has the face off ability, playmaking, passing, wrist shot power, wrist shot accuracy, slap shot power, slap shot accuracy, offensive awareness, hockey IQ, speed, skating, agility, and stick handling. He is amazing on both the power play and the penalty killing unit. He can score short-handed too. Luca Del Bel Belluz gives Minnesota a guy who can compliment Marco Rossi as a second line center on the Minnesota Wild down the road allowing Minnesota to keep Joel Eriksson Ek as a third line center.

Liam Ohgren, LW, Djurgardens

The 6-1 187 lb Liam Ohgren had 33 goals, 25 assists, 58 points, and a +8 +/- ratio with the Djurgardens IF Under 20 Team in Sweden in 30 games in 2021-2022. He also got promoted to the Djurgardens IF SHL team where he had 1 goal, 1 assist, and 2 points in 25 games against men instead of kids his own age in he league 2021-2022. Liam Ohgren was also team captain for Sweden's Under 18 Team at this years World Junior Championships.

Jiri Kulich, C, HC Energie Karlovy Vary

The 6-0 186 Jiri Kulich is versatile enough to play left wing, center, or right wing. Jiri Kulich had 9 goals, 5 assists, and 14 points in 49 Extraliga games in the Czech Repuplic. Jiri Kulich is one of a few prospects in Extraliga that managed to score on top 10 draft prospect David Jiricek one of the top two defenseman in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft while lining up as a first line left winger.

Jiri Kulich has the face off ability, skating, speed, burst, athleticism, passing, playmaking, stick handling, deking, wrist shot power, and wrist shot accuracy. The rest of his game from developing a slap shot, to offensive awareness by playing pucks out of zone not making safe passes, to defensive awareness, to a lack of physicality are the areas that Jiri Kulcich has to improve in. The biggest weakness Jiri Kulich has is a lack of physicality and he's not always going to get leverage on puck possession, but if you can look past that, you can make a legitimiate case for taking him in the back half of the first round.

Jiri Kulich is a safe bet to be a middle six player on a second or third line at left wing or center. He's got a chance to reach a first line left winger or center role in the NHL, but a slim chance at that. Buffalo takes a chance on Jiri Kulich at 28 thrilled that he's still on the board this late in the first round.

Isaac Howard, LW, USNTDP (USHL)

The 5-10 174 lb Isaac Howard had 16 goals, 17 assists, 33 points, and a +3 +/- ratio in 2020-2021 on the second line of the United States National Team Developmental Program in the USHL. Howard had 11 goals, 26 assists, 37 points, and a +18 +/- ratio splitting line 1 left winger time with Cutter Gauthier in 2021-2022.

Isaac Howard has the has the playmaking, sniping, passing, wrist shot power, wrist shot accuracy, slap shot power, slap shot accuracy, offensive awareness, hockey IQ, speed, skating, agility, and stick handling. Isaac Howard got a hat trick for USA in an international game against Finland. He's got a hockey scholarship to Minnesota-Duluth starting in 2022-2023 meaning he could be ready for the NHL as early as 2023-2024.

Rutger McGroaty, C, USNTDP (USHL)

The 6-1 198 lb Rutger McGroaty had 12 goals, 7 assists, 19 points, and a -7 +/- ratio as a rookie in 2020-2021 with the USHL. Rutger McGroaty had 15 goals, 18 assists, 33 points, and a +24 +/- ratio in 2021-2022. McGroaty mainly played on the third and fourth lines in the USHL despite playing on the first line with the Oakland Jr. Grizzlies. With Chaz Lucius enrolled into Minnesota, McGroaty should be the second line center behind Logan Cooley this season, but with Frank Nazar playing second line center at times, this kept McGroaty on the third line. Rutger McGroaty will go to Michigan on a hockey scholarship starting in 2022-2023.

Rutger McGroaty has the playmaking, sniping, passing, wrist shot power, wrist shot accuracy, slap shot power, slap shot accuracy, offensive awareness, hockey IQ, speed, skating, agility, stick handling, and ability to win faceoffs. He's a playmaker that can do everything you want a line 1 game changer to do on tape, but he needs to improve his defensive awareness. He can do well on the power play. Rutger McGroaty is someone with the traits to play on the first line in the NHL despite playing on a third or fourth line in the USHL.

Rutger McGroaty was the captain for Team USA during this years World Junior Championships. This shows me he has the leadership traits that you want from a first line center despite getting second or third line action in the USHL. Rutger McGroaty could be ready for a second or third line role in Pittsburgh by 2023-2024.

Denton Mateychuk, D, Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL)

The 5-11 192 lb Denton Mateychuk had 2 goals, 7 assists, 9 points, and a -8 +/- ratio in 2020-2021. Denton Mateychuk did a lot better in his second season with the Moose Jaw Warriors after getting promoted to the first line with 13 goals, 51 assists, 64 points, and a +20 +/- ratio in 65 regular season games. Mateychuk also had 1 goal, 9 assists, and 10 points in 10 WHL Playoff games in 2021-2022. Denton Mateychuk was team captain of Team White in the 2022 CHL Prospects Game where Team White defeated Team Red. San Jose's 2022 first round pick finished in the top 3 in the Weave Agility drill and he also finished in the top 5 in the Transition Agility with Puck drill during the 10 Combine drills that test a players athleticism at the 2022 CHL Prospects Game.

Denton Mateychuk has the speed, explosion, burst, agility, skating, foot speed, playmaking, passing, sniping, wrist shot power, wrist shot accuracy, slap shot power, slap shot accuracy, vision, offensive awareness, defensive awareness, and hockey IQ to succeed in the NHL. He's a very good defenseman who can play on a first line power play unit in the NHL as well as a first line penalty killing unit.

MY COMMENT: The writer makes his NHL comparison as Matt Dumba, so I am not interested in this one.

The NHL draft always seems like a crap shoot unless you are drafting in the top 10 or so, which we rarely have had the pleasure of doing.......
As long as we get a couple of centers in this draft I will be happy. If they can help in the next 2 years even better, but not likely.

I'll be surprised if the Wild just stay put and draft at 19 & 24. My gut says there is a trade up coming.

I wouldn't be surprised by a trade up using both picks if he can get high enough for top end center.

It would be nice if it involved sending Dumba out somewhere.

To be honest, I think Dumba's value may be higher at the trade deadline later during the season than it is now.
But, I think Addison can take the spot next to Brodin and eliminate some of those "Dumbo plays" and add some offense too. Moving him and his contract before season would be preferred.
