Five players the Wild could target in the first round of the NHL draft
Restocking at forward might be key for the Wild, and it will likely have a couple of these players to choose from with the 21st pick in the first round.

By Sarah McLellan Star Tribune JUNE 27, 2023 — 6:38PM

The Wild have the 21st pick in the first round of the NHL draft on Wednesday in Nashville. Here are five players who they might consider at that spot. TV coverage of the draft begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday with the first round on ESPN and ESPN+. Rounds 2 through 7 start at 10 a.m. Thursday on the NHL Network and ESPN+.

Daniil But, left wing, Yaroslavl Jr. (Russia)

At 6-5, But offers a unique combination of size and skill. A playmaker and a scorer, he produced at a point-per-game clip last season.

Samuel Honzek, left wing, Vancouver (Western Hockey League)

Honzek made a smooth transition from his native Slovakia to the WHL. Not only did he eclipse 20 goals and total more than 50 points in 43 games, but Honzek handled all situations for Vancouver.

Calum Ritchie, center, Oshawa (Ontario Hockey League)

Despite dealing with a season-long shoulder injury, Ritchie was still a key player. Noteworthy is his vision.

Eduard Sale, left wing, Brno (Czechia)

The fourth-ranked European skater by NHL Central Scouting, Sale is a slick skater and effective passer. His transition play is impressive.

Otto Stenberg, center, Frolunda Jr. (Sweden)

Elusive and quick, Stenberg is strong on the puck. He captained Sweden at the IIHF Under-18 World Championship where he led the team in scoring.

There should be a lot of opportunity tonight. The 2023 draft is supposd to be really strong and the Wild have 3 picks in the top 65. One article said that the draft has 17 clear cut top skaters. Odds are at least one of them will fall to #21. The Wild also have the means to move up if there is somebody they really want.

I just want them to not draft anybody under 6 feet. We really need some size on this team.

With those 3 "higher-ish" picks, they should have a lot of options. Of the 5 listed above, But and Stenberg intrigue me the most. Size and need.

Agreed
Bring on the But!
and, we really need another good Center, with size and skill.

I'd like Stenberg for sure. Watching him in the world juniors he looked like a horse out there with size and speed. Give him a few years and he could be another Ek. At 21 we should be able to grab a top notch center with size and that is my hope.

I guess Bedard is going to be the pick for us. He’s a talented player for sure, but I wish we would trade out of the spot and pick up some d men and bigger forwards. I’m worried Bedard’s going to get flattened on a regular basis.

He's supposed to be the next generational great player that your team and several others tanked for!
Are you ready to trade in your Blackhawks card for a Wild card? You know you're welcome.

Ha! Nah. I’m like that codependent partner who hopes everything works out in the end. I’ve lived in the Chicago area since I was five, and the Hawks were always my team.

Bedard is supposed to be a generational talent, but the dude is a smurf.

Right? You need to get some guys to protect him when he is young. He’s only 1&! Let’s see what they do with the 19th pick.

But is a big talent, but very raw.

Sale gone right before the Wild pick. Guy is a pure scorer.

Pretty much every scouting service gave this kid a 2nd round grade.

He had a poor year playing on a bad Bucky team, but before that many thought he was a top 10 type of player according to the guys on ESPN.
At least we got a big center with potential. Still no first line center, but with him and Ek 2 and 3 should be good to go.

I like that he is a center. I like that he is huge. I love that he is a St. Paul kid. I just feel like there were much better players on the board.
