That said, one of the 3 will be traded before the 24-25 season.

That's about 90M for the 3 bigs this year and close to 110M for them next season.

Something's gotta give.

Analysis for most expensive roster with poorest results ?

Wolves maybe can win that.

Towns.

And yes regarding Naz, for now you carve out enough minutes for him backing up Rudy and Towns. But not as a backup ‘center’. If he comes in for Rudy, Towns slides over to center. He could occasionally play here or there without both of them, but only if they’re intentionally going small.

From last year? Wizards. Factor in expectations and Clippers are in the mix although their big 2 were injured. A case could be made for Golden State simply due to how far over the cap they went. After those teams, maybe Dallas (but the Irving trade was late) and/or Minnesota.

No definitive answer as there are lots of subjective factors. And I don't understand cap aprons, which affects the Wolves' numbers.

And again all that was last year.

Houston Rockets with $88M dead cap money.

Does that mean salaries still being paid to people not actively on the roster? Wow.

Per source, the #Timberwolves are "very interested" in Caris LeVert in free agency and are considered a front-runner to sign the talented wing. #NBA

LeVert is made of glass. Injured to some extent every year of his career going back to his final 2 years in college.

He's made it to 50 games twice since 2017.

Easy pass.

Timberwolves are declining to pick up Taurean Prince’s $7.4M contract.

I’m glad of this. Prince started off the season playing very well, then declined. Money can be better spent elsewhere. Good change.

Not unexpected. With Naz back, Anderson will likely slide down to SF, so there really isn't room for Prince.

We have no shot at Brown. Donte is a possibility.

Jon K has a good breakdown of potential FAs. If it was me, I'd resign NAW, use part of the MLE on Jevon Carter and then use a bit of the remainder to sign Miller to a deal similar to what we did with Minott last year.

--------

Eric Gordon: News broke late Wednesday night that the Los Angeles Clippers were waiving Gordon to save money. He would be an ideal fit as a bench scorer if he would accept the midlevel exception. Gordon shot 42 percent after coming to Los Angeles in a trade with Houston.
Likelihood of a deal: Slim. There should be a line out the door for his services.

Bruce Brown: What a playoff run with Denver for the hard-nosed defender and timely shotmaker. Brown stepped out of Kevin Durant’s shadow in Brooklyn and was a major reason for the Nuggets winning a title. He can play both guard spots and would help the Wolves in so many areas. But every team in the league will be lining up to pay him.
Likelihood of a deal: Don’t see it.

Dennis Schröder: The Wolves need a backup point guard, and Schroder filled that very role with the Los Angeles Lakers last season. He often outplayed D’Angelo Russell in the playoffs, leading to more minutes in big spots for him. He’s an aggressive defender and attacker with an edge.
Likelihood of a deal: Doubtful, but never say never.

Jevon Carter: A tough, tough guard who quietly shot 42 percent from 3-point land for the Milwaukee Bucks last season. Carter started 39 games for one of the best teams in the league. His edge and playoff experience would serve this team well.
Likelihood of a deal: This feels doable. Carter made a modest $3.9 million last season and will likely be looking for a bigger raise than Milwaukee can give him.

Max Strus: His shooting prowess helped the Miami Heat in their surprising run to the NBA Finals. The Wolves registered interest in him at the trade deadline last year. Strus is also a hard-playing defender. Some of that Heat culture may come in handy for this Timberwolves team.
Likelihood of a deal: Certainly possible if another team doesn’t blow him out of the water with a huge offer.

Donte DiVincenzo: A lot to like here. A good shooter (39.7 percent from 3 for the Warriors last season) who can handle it, get out in transition and defend a little bit. The Wolves were hot on him in the draft in 2018 when he went three spots ahead of them and thought they were close to a contract with him last summer before he chose Golden State.
Likelihood of a deal: Certainly possible, but I don’t think it’s probable.

Troy Brown Jr.: At 6-6, 215 pounds, Brown has good size for a wing. He shot 38 percent for the Lakers last season but played sparingly in the Western Conference finals. Wouldn’t have to break the bank for him.
Likelihood of a deal: Might depend on how badly the Lakers want him back.

Josh Richardson: Only played 24 games for New Orleans, but at his best he is a solid wing defender and a good shooter from 3. Does he still have that in him? Would come full circle because his name was involved in trade talks when Jimmy Butler was orchestrating his way out of town.
Likelihood of a deal: The market will likely be less competitive for him than for Brown or DiVincenzo, which presumably would make a deal easier.

I'd be very happy with this outcome and it keeps us out of the tax.

Conley/Carter/McLaughlin
Ant/NAW/Moore
McDaniels/SloMo
KAT/Naz/Minott
Rudy/Naz/Garza

Miller likely spends most of the year in Iowa. Minott, Moore and Garza can be fed minutes as earned, but we wouldn't be reliant on them.

We made him an Unrestricted Free Agent instead of Restricted. We still have his Bird Rights. Nothing really changed except we don't have to worry about him signing his QO.

All it does is let us prioritize the option of using the full MLE before making a decision on NAW.

So if he is an URFA he could get scooped up if we drag our feet?

Sure. But I'd assume we're in contact with him, and if he really wants to stay he'd offer us a chance to match.

If he doesn't want to stay, then he would've signed his QO offer if extended and left after this season anyways.

He's also likely to be a pretty low priority FA among other teams. Probably a fall back if they strike out elsewhere.

Minneapolis/St. Paul – The Minnesota Timberwolves today named Corliss Williamson Assistant Coach. Williamson comes to the Wolves after previous coaching stops with the Sacramento Kings (2013-16), Orlando Magic (2016-18) and Phoenix Suns (2018-19).

“Corliss is a fantastic addition to our staff,” said Timberwolves Head Coach Chris Finch. “He brings a wealth of experience, both in the NBA and on the collegiate level. He will make a significant impact in a variety of areas of the team. We look forward to welcoming him and his family to our Timberwolves family.”

Prior to his coaching career, Williamson enjoyed a 12-year NBA playing career from 1995-2007 that featured stops with Detroit, Philadelphia and Sacramento, highlighted by being a member of the 2004 Pistons Championship team. Regarded as one of the best role players during his career, “Big Nasty” was named 2001-02 NBA Sixth Man of the Year. In 822 career games (293 starts), he averaged 11.2 points on 49.0% shooting and 3.9 rebounds. From 1995-96 through 2006-07, no player in the NBA totaled more bench points (5,192) than Williamson.

“I can’t wait to join the Minnesota Timberwolves staff and be a part of what Tim and Chris are building here in Minnesota,” Williamson said. “We have a lot of talent on this roster and I’m excited to get to work with our guys to help them be the best players on and off the court.”

Prior to coaching in the NBA, the Russellville, Ark. native served as an assistant coach for Arkansas Baptist College from 2007-2009 before being named the school’s head coach in 2009. Williamson also served as the head coach at the University of Central Arkansas from 2010-2013.

We basically swapped Prince for Brown with the Lakers.

I like it for us. Brown is 23 and a better, more switchable, defender. Prince might be a more consistent shooter, but Brown offers more on offense.

Good! From a practical standpoint he was replaceable so it didn’t really matter. But I like him. What he showed in his audition with the Wolves last season was exactly what I want on my bench.

Wolves' 2023 free agent class so far:

• Nickeil Alexander-Walker
• Troy Brown Jr.
• Shake Milton

All are either 6-foot-5 or 6-foot-6 with 6-foot-9 or wider wingspans, handling abilities, can guard multiple positions, and can shoot it from 3.

A lot to like on the margins.
