I get the Minnesota-sports-fan mentality. I've lived it my entire life. But why is it when we win it's a stolen win? How about we just recovered from a bad first period and rallied to beat the other team, thanks in large part to our goalie who was on fire?

We won 2-0 while getting outshot 41-19. I think it's safe to say that Gus stole us that game.

Exactly, anybody that watched the game knows Gus was the only reason we won.

It still is amazing how we ended up with Gus. The former's goalie's agent (Talbot) complained just enough for Guerin to get pissed.

Maybe it's just semantics. I say that Gus WON us that game, he didn't steal anything. Saying he stole it diminishes the amazing job he did.

We really need to bring up a couple more of the young defensemen as soon as possible. We have Brodin and Faber and after that not so much without Spurgeon. The rest of them are 3rd pair at best and shouldn't be seeing the ice time they are currently. So far this season we stole 2 points and got smoked by a better team.

Merrel is really bad.

We were badly outplayed in the first. We grew in to the game a bit but they skated circles around us. Rossi looked much better, btw.

This is good news. I think Foligno and Freddy are good line mates for him at this stage. They flank Rossi with size, a fair amount of talent and high IQs. Can't emphasize enough, the Wild NEED Rossi to succeed.

I will add Addison....the Wild need Rossi and Addison to succeed.

Agree but would add "Dean needs to allow them to succeed"

I don't see that as diminishing what he did In any way shape or form.

Sweens, think of it like this. Someone goes to college and studies hard, but has almost no help from family or student guidance counselors or anyone else. Against a lot of odds, he earns a degree. Did he steal it or earn it? If someone said "dude, you stole that degree" in some kind of intended praise, wouldn't that sound weird?

Sure.

But I don't think that's an accurate analogy at all. Gus working hard and earning his shot in the League and then his current position is closer to getting a degree than the results of one single game.

And "stealing a game" is not in any way a Minnesota thing. Its a time-honored sports saying anytime a team wins a game that they're badly outplayed in. It says nothing about the level of ability, work or dedication of the players on the winning (or losing) team.

Its just short-hand for winning a game that you probably should have lost. And Herculean efforts are often a part of the equation. In this case the rest of the team played so poorly, that Gus "stole" the victory with outstanding play.

Its high praise.

Wow, I didn't think that sports cliche was going to start such a firestorm!
All I know is, if I was playing against Gus and he stood on his head with numerous outstanding saves like he did against Florida, I would say he stole one from us.
If anything, it was a complement to Gus and his great play that night.

This analogy is apples to oranges.......

It wasn't meant to be a firestorm. It was simply a difference of opinion of a choice of words. I make a living working with words, so it comes naturally to me to drill down a bit on word choices. I'm fine with moving on.

With Spurgeon, Boldy and Goligoski all hurt, #mnwild will have to play a man short tonight. 11/6. They’ll determine their options tomorrow, but they’ll now be able to call up a forward starting with Thursday’s game making 875K or less if they choose

The injuries are certainly piling up early and we have no cap room to do anything about it.....looks like we will be playing shorthanded tonight.

Really great period. This should be 4-0 GG's and that's being generous to the home folks. 2 shorties, 3 pipes and multiple grade A chances. Rossi looks really good again. He puts himself in really good positions to be dangerous.

Fleury didn't have to do much but he did have to bail out Hartman after a terrible, lazy pass. Carter tried to cover for him by saying it rolled off his blade but that was BS. That was a terrible decision.

ST's are doing well tonight minus the 5-4 PP which has been 'blah'. A 5-3 tally and KK gets off the schnide as the GG's are up 4-1 going in to the 3rd.

Fleury wasn't busy again but he made some really important saves in the final 30 seconds.

4-1 good guys after 2 and Fleury hasn't had to do too much flopping so far. I cringe every time I see #4 out on the ice for us. Merrill tries to jump into the offense but is too damn slow to get back play defense and when he does and seems like every time his partner is stuck defending a 2 on 1. That is how they got their one goal.....

Thanks for the updates guys. I haven't been able to watch much to this point except a few snippets on my phone. I'm really happy to hear Rossi is continuing to play well. I watched the replays of his goal and the kid just battled relentlessly for position. Not in that Parise...plant in the crease and get cross checked relentlessly in the back...way. He keeps shifting around in front and manuevers into that void in the middle of the chaos to get his chances. That way he can whack the puck in space instead of just trying to jam it through the goalie. Good to hear he sustaining that level.

A big hat tip to Brock Faber on that play. That was beautiful the way he hopped the boards and swooped cross ice to pick the pass inside the blue line and straight to goal to create the chaos.

Rossi has looked very good so far and everything about his game has improved over last season and it's just a matter of time before the goals and assists start coming for him. He has a way of finding the quiet ice in front of the net instead parking there and getting hammered.
Faber has quickly become our 2nd best defenseman and the more he plays the better he gets. It was telling last night when Deano had to split up Faber and Brodin so they each could cover for their partners....

I watched a highlight of a Fleury flop; thought he was going to get called for high sticking with his skate....

Rossi is also winning FO's which is a huge bonus. We now have 2 options late in games in that respect.
