Darnold’s ceiling isn’t high enough for him to start eating 35 mil + for any length of time.

We need the guy on a rookie deal and that guy is waiting in the wings. I guarantee JJM has put in the work. Breaking down every game. Every pass, route and options. With the QB whisperer we’ll be fine.

His ceiling? He already has the most 100+ rating games in Vikings history (11)....that is a pretty high ceiling with 3 games left.

What is funny is that most of these guys hated Cousins because he was a check-down Charlie. Darnold presses the ball downfield and looks to make plays, which is far more difficult throwing into coverage.

Some of these people have short memories.

Phil, you and I have a very short list of things we agree on, but this is one of them.

Watching Darnold throw to the deepest open target (even when that target is less open than the shorter ones) sends a fire through me that I haven't felt in about six years or so. Statisitcal championships and theoretical MVP awards only exist in minds that were clamped tight with denial.

I wouldn't give ANY qb $30-50+ mil unless that QB had won me a Super Bowl. Did you win a Super Bowl on your rookie deal? Yes? Great! Here's your hugenormous contract. F it let's just run victory laps and love life. No? Good luck. Next!

I never agreed more that when Kirk extended a play to a checkdown most of the time.....when Sam does it you know there wasn't anything deep.

As a WR or even TE they have to love it. Run around for 5-7 seconds and then your QB dumps it off?

Sam gets 1-2 DPI a game also....which don't show up in the stats either. A site says we have 14 for 311.....the most yards gained by DPI.

Sam extends plays and throws daggers.....exactly what KOC wants in his offense.
He doesn't check down....especially on plays he extends.

He's also got a much better feel for the pass rush. He may get sacked, but he isn't careless with the ball and doesn't fumble a bunch. Cousins had zero pocket presence. He'd get strip-sacked about every-other game, totally oblivious to what was going on around him. He had no internal clock.

Off-season moves:

Franchise tag Darnold.

Land two more offensive linemen, whether it be by draft or free agency.

Throw a vault of money at Flores to stay.

Here’s hoping for a good problem in Sam taking us on a playoff run. Uncharted territory for him, who knows if he’ll ball or fall.

If we win it all, or at least appear in the SB I call it a perfect storm and stick with the plan.

Might sound crazy. Might fail. It’s still the right move.

I will support Sam if the can’t let him go. And if he’s the best QB let JJM earn it.

I feel like we're in a great position to have to choose between signing Darnold and taking a chance with a first-round-QB. Based on my signature, I'm in favor of risking it with the cheap rookie. That said, I won't complain if they go with Darnold if he can be had for $35 million per or under. My signature hasn't been adjusted for inflation in a year or two so $35 million might barely qualify as being in compliance with my philosophy. Darnold is a stone cold killer.

Build the team. Trust in KOC.

I wish it was that easy. We will need another near perfect offseason.....Only 33 of our roster is signed for next year.

Brad so with Flores CB doesn't need to be as big of focus?

I think we need to see how the last 3 games and playoffs go before deciding anything on Sam. Stumble in these last 3 games with a one and done playoff and he will have accomplished nothing more than Cousins ever has here. Win the division and LEAD the team on a deep playoff run and you have to bring him back. At the point l, he's a bona fide franchise QB.

Gotta give props to Turner for that sick knee bend on the sack. I hadn’t really seen anything like it. That’s 99th percentile stuff right there.

his knee brushed the turf as he turned that edge....

Sort of like a short track speed skater or a motorcycle in a high speed curve except it was more insane. Lawrence Taylor, for all his strength, was amazingly athletic like that. It was one of the most incredible plays I've seen.

I don't know that the Vikes stand to get 2 1sts for a guy on a year deal who may not want to go to any of the teams the Vikings want to trade him to.

Here is the thing I really don't understand...why would you trade a Superbowl winning franchise QB? That's the thing you have to have and the piece that is hardest to get.

As mentioned last week, if Darnold leads the team to the SB (especially as opposed to the team getting there despite Darnold) then he gets the blank check.

And right now it's 'what have you done for me lately' time as the games are for higher stakes.

For the franchise tag crowd, a projected $41 million in cap is handed to him the moment he signs, there are no credit cards.

The sign and trade idea that Todd brought up sounds intriguing but I don't know how that works (obstacles, loopholes, etc).

One, the timing would be good. Fans will be so placated from the SB win, having gotten that ‘one before I die’ that they can be sold on the direction already planned for.

Two, I think we can do more for this team with draft picks and $ than rewarding Sam with what would then be $45+\year.

Three, I think Sam is fools gold and I don’t want to be tied to that.

Sometimes it’s just a special team playing together with a few lucky breaks.

Would you have wanted Case Keenum to be rewarded the same?

No, but Sam Darnold isn't Case Keenum. Darnold is making plays with skill and decisive action. There is no repeated blindly chucking the ball up for grabs and time after time have a receiver come out of nowhere to get it. It was obvious to most that Keenum was living on borrowed time. There is really no comparison between Darnold and Keenum. Like I said, let's see what Darnold does with the last 3 games and the playoffs.

If Sam Darnold were to win a Super Bowl here, he would be the very definition of NOT fools gold.

My $0.02 and random thoughts:

It's tough to win in the NFL, and the Vikes now have 12 on the year with 3 games to go!

Divisional games are always different. And we pulled pout at 18-point win. I'm not gonna bitch about that!

There was some chatter about "if CHI doesn't have that pre-snap penalty, then the game changes". Maybe, but that is also the crap we have been saying for years about us! If only payer X hadn't whiffed, missed the kick, gone out of bounds, etc..... Winning teams find a way to overcome that crap and win. Look at the walk-in TD that Jettas dropped!

The defense gave up some plays, but it was clear they had a different gameplan this time and Caleb looked confused and frustrated all game.

Darnold is a guy who is going to take some chances - high risk - high reward. And even with some INT, the production is there. You can't win playing check-down conservative BS like we had with Cousins. It is not sustainable and requires near perfection. I'll take the guy who has a little gunslinger in him - especially when he backs it up with solid completion percentage, 3rd down conversions and TDs!

Plus, as mentioned by others, he has good pocket awareness - and WAY better than Counsins. He moves around in the pocket well and makes a few plays per game with his legs. THAT is what you need.

I feel like DET is at a point where the magic could be over - someone just needs to pop the bubble....

And finally, Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all of the folks posting and lurking on here. You are the best!
