The thing about Jones is that he has a friend in Chicago, Jahlil Okafor - the top center recruit in the class, who is allegedly a packaged deal with him. Tubby and Jones have tried to get Okafor to make a visit to Minnesota, but he has no interest. Given this, I think it's highly unlikely that Jones lands here. If it weren't for this, I'd put the odds more at 1:4 type territory.

I've heard this story too. I don't know how true it is or if it is a case of one of them saying "it would be great to play together" and the rumors taking on a life of their own. Until this breakout season happend I would have put the odds at infinity to 1 of Jones coming here. It felt more like the gratuitous keep Minnesota on the list to keep the locals happy. Then ultimately they go somewhere else and we find out Minnesota was like their 80th choice. I think the steady climb in the rankings, the success of guards like Hollins and smacking down Izzo, who is also in the Jones sweepstakes, put the Gophers legimately in the hunt.

I am sure it has peaked the interest of other in state studs like Rashad Vaughn and Reid Travis.

Right now this feels like a Sweet Sixteen to Elite Eight-type team. They need to play the way I expect this season (winning all home games against the non-cream of the conference, and all road games against the Nebraska and Penn State types, and steal a few others) to get a 2-5 seed or this will be an uphill climb. Second Round to Final Four is the broader range. I don't see the depth or true scorer to win it all, but anything can happen and Andre Hollins could become that guy by season's end.

Unfortunate.

I read where the feeling is Wally got into the picture vs redshirt to keep the fam happy, and to get an angle on his younger/taller brother, too.

Which is unfortunate. Wally is discovering that defense has to be played, and he's got a lot to learn. IMO would have been better red-shirting.

This should excite the kids/recruits. This bunch is showing you can play real hoops, not plod around like Wisconsin does.

Play D, board it and run the floor.

Coleman put on a hustle clinic last night.

Great post
I've always been behind that plan
If Wisconsins style is what it takes to be good .... I don't wanna be good.
Their games have all the excitement of a colonoscopy.

When we finally did get a decent team I prayed it would be
fast
tough
fun
We're getting there.
Last night was just like the Mich State game ... when we plod, we get caught. When we start running, we OPEN the freaking game wide-open.

Some fun links:

http://www.teamrankings.com/ncaa-basketball/team/minnesota-golden-gophers/bracketology

http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-triangle/post/_/id/47152/austin-hollins-rises-in-the-moment-minnesota-beats-illinois

Interesting on "the moment," but that seems a bit simplified.  If Austin Hollins doesn't make that play, we don't blow them out anyway?  I'm not convinced.  Basketball does seem a little more like that (with momentum) than other sports, but I think it's mostly because the pace is so much faster and there is so much scoring that can happen in a short amount of time.

I thought the deal was that Jones had either Vaughn or Travis wanted to go to same team

The story I remember is the Okafor kid from Chicago. I think they met playing for the national 16U team.

William loves this version vs last 2 years of Gophs. They fly around. Loves watching the style.

And after being in the barn for MSU, there is no doubt that running the floor energizes the crowd, which energizes players.

Gonna be tough today. Our block out down low is pathetic and they are getting way too many 2nd (3rd and 5th) chance points.

Also, our O is pretty stagnant. We need a big shooting day out of Hollins to have a chance.

I need to start a poll as to who's more annoying overall. Duke or Indiana? Too tough to call for me.

And Pete's other team Duke is losing 1st game today.

I keep yelling at tv every time I see a charge/blocking foul thinking called wrong. But I guess that is the toughest call for a ref

I know they came up short, but that was one TREMENDOUS comeback that I believe will only make the Gophers stronger.

Men's division 1 basketball is so balanced....take the NCState victory over Duke today.

Then consider all the hype leading up to the FBS game between Alabama and Notre Dame.

But we can't have a playoff system in football.......all the games would take the players away from their studies for much too long.

wonder how the Gophers bounce back and handle Michigan at home? Seems like their strong comeback would bode well for them coming back very well and play very strong at home against Michigan. They will likely come in rated No. 1 as long as they beat OSU on Sunday.

That was a fun comeback.  I was driving home from work listening to the end of the game.  With 1 minute left I called my wife and told her to turn the channel to 425 so it was on when I walked in.  The last thing I heard on the radio was when the Gophers gave up the rebound on the missed free throws, down 3.  Knew it was over then.

Still, a very fun comeback to listen to.  Couldn't believe it as it was happening!
