Gophers lose another one in Anaheim.  This might have had something to do with it:

Minnesota's Al Nolen and Lawrence Westbrook did not start for disciplinary reasons, coach Tubby Smith said.

They had a total of 10 points, combined in the game.

I bet they didn't make it back to their bed check in time.

And I'm wondering if Williams is now in the dog house as he only had 6 minutes

He barely played in the whole tourney. I was really looking forward to seeing him.

Williams was kind of behind the curve all tournament. He picked up 3 fouls in 3 minutes of game 1 and never got going. I think he sat over freshman inconsistency than anything else.

This team sucks.  No way we contend for the Big 10.  Can't shoot and our bigs couldn't box me out and I'm 6'2 195.  Our guards couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.  Airballing open 3's....at this level???

The big's  blocking out ability, or lack of, is probably why Tubby wanted White and Mbakwe on this team.

Lots of work to do.

I agree. Rebounding was horrible.

Iverson plays more physical then Sampson so why isn't he getting more of the playing time?

I agree about Iverson, Fargo. He seems to be way more aggressive than Sampson and it's not even close. Just my opinion but I feel that Tubby goes a little overboard with his desire to have a deep, well-rounded team. In his efforts to be deep, it's killing any shot at building player's confidence. As I've stated before, I hate his substitution patterns and I really believe that this is the root of the problem. It seems as though every time a player starts getting into a groove Tubby pulls him for some reason and by the time he comes back in the game he's lost his rhythm & momentum. Somebody needs to tell him it's ok if a player scores 20+ points. I get the feeling he'd rather have five guys with twelve points each and he's substituting in an effort to make that happen.

I didn't watch the first few games so I have no idea, but how was Williams scoring his points in the first few games? Was he creating his shot, were they fast break points,...? I'm curious because from the games I've seen all he does is slash out to the wing for a pass in the half court offense and quickly throw it back without taking a dribble or looking for a shot or anything actually useful.

I'm not so concerned about him going deep into the bench. I've seen this before from Clem and as soon as the Big 10 starts the bench gets smaller but the players sitting will have the floor time and confidence that they can go out and help if needed, like someone getting in foul trouble in the physical big 10

I hope you're right and this just ends up helping them in Big 10 play. However, that assumes that Tubby sees that he can't win substituting like he has and he's going to change it up during Big 10 play. If this is the case, my only issue is that he treated some games where they needed wins to help their tourney hopes as meanignless "pre-season" games.

Will Bostick make a difference?  Is he a point guard or a shooting guard?

edit:  He's 6'5", so he's not a point guard.  He might even be a small forward.  Does he play both positions? (shooting guard and small forward)

Bostick will not make a big difference, unless he's pulled a complete 180 since last season.  He's just another guy who can't get his own shot.

IMO, that is our problem and will continue to be.  We play GREAT defense but have no reliable scorers on this team.  (The one guy who can get his own shot, Westbrook, has no idea what a good/bad shot is)  That is good enough to beat mediocre teams and pull a few upsets along the way, but we won't compete for the Big 10 or make a tourney run.  I don't care how good your defense is, when you get to this level and you play a good team you still have to score.  You're not going to hold a Michigan St or Purdue to 55-60 points, and we can't score if the game becomes a halfcourt battle.  Good teams will handle our fullcourt press well enough so we won't score easy buckets through our pressure.

I don't know if White could have been that guy, but right now I don't see this roster making the next step.  I still think we'll be just good enough to make the dance as a 8-10 seed, but we're not good enough to be a threat in March.

Jake, good point about these games not being meaningless.  These games vs. Butler, A&M, Miami are the games the committee look at when seeding, deciding who gets in.  They're not tune up games.  Probably the biggest reason we got in the tourney last year was our win vs. Louisville.

Bostick was a highly regard junior college recruit.  The Gopher basketball program reminds me a little bit of the football program:  good at recruiting, but not good on the floor, especially on offense.

Watched the Gophers last night and it was a tale between to halfs. In the first half they protected the ball and made a few steals. In the second half, Morgan St was the ball hawk. As a whole though, the team played well but need to get better before the big 10 season starts. I hope Hofaber continues his good shooting as he has shown in the last 2 games

Maybe Hoffarber is more comfy as a starter.

Good to see the whole team play well today. St Joe's used to be a good team in a tough conference.

Build that confidence back up so he can help in the Big 10 this year.

Finally we see some energy & attitude from Sampson!!! I've been screaming for it since the first day he stepped on the Barn's floor but have yet to see any life in him whatsoever before this game. Up until this game, he looked like he couldn't care less about basketball but in this game he finally showed some intensity!!

As critical as I've been on Tubby this year, I have to commend him for having them fired up for this last game. This was the first game in a long time that I've been impressed with their energy level. I'm still not sold on his hockey-line type substitution patterns but their play is getting better.

If they play that fast and also that deep, other teams will fade as the game progresses!
