ORIGINAL: SoMnFan There's a school west of here a couple miles. They are the Dolphins. Hmmm. Pretty sure Jacques Costeau never schooled around there. What were they before that? Some politically incorrect nickname? I'm betting something native-related You're probably right I have some opposing views on that whole issue As someone with some native in me, I always perked up on this issue I get it when people are offended, I get it when they need to change some things. But When I grew up we all wanted to be Chiefs, Braves, Warriors, Indians. It made all of us want to explore the culture and embrace it. It was a source of community pride in many small towns. Eliminating the connotations it had did the opposite of what it intended, imo. No kid grows up wanting to be a fighting slot machine or a one-armed bandit. Just one opinion. Just German and Dutch in this blood. And the only time I took offense to derogatory nicknames was when I was in the bullying years of grade school and junior high. I finished my HS career as a Warrior. Thought that was an awesome nickname. Now it's tossed out because it offends. I guess. In the conference I mostly grew up with there were the Cherokee Braves and Spirit Lake Indians. Both sources of past history for those city and nicknames. IDK what they even are now. Will have to check.
