Thursday, April 3, 2008USC's Carroll on Leinart: Seeing is not believing
By MARK SAXONThe Orange County Register

LOS ANGELES -- USC coach Pete Carroll said he doubted the veracity of photos circulating on the Internet that show Matt Leinart partying with young women at his Arizona home.
However, Carroll said he had several conversations cautioning Leinart to be mindful of his image while he was still in college.

"They photo-shopped that one, as far as I'm concerned," Carroll said of pictures that first appeared on thedirty.com. "I surely don't believe everything I see in the media."

Leinart is shown helping a young woman drink beer from a tube in one shot and he is sharing a hot tub with four women in another. After hitting the Internet, the photos were shown on "SportsCenter" and have become fodder for talk radio shows.

Arizona Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said Wednesday he was "disappointed" in his quarterback. Leinart's Hollywood night-club visits occasionally became an issue with Carroll before the Heisman trophy winner was drafted 10th overall by the Cardinals in 2006.

"I used to talk to him all the time. He allowed himself to be scrutinized," Carroll said. "He was always mindful of doing the right thing, but he did put himself in positions where he could be scrutinized, so he kind of liked toying with it."

Carroll praised Leinart's commitment to his craft, something Whisenhunt also mentioned.

"He's a tremendously hard-working guy and he's a guy that loves the game," Carroll said. "It's really important to him and I know Matt hasn't lost sight of it. This is a huge season for him and he's preparing for it."

Awesome. Espn wasted hours yesterday speculating about Favre's return.
Now they can spend hours today, speculating about his non-return.
Great how that works.

The entire four years of Favre retirement speculation has gone beyond pathetic.  I lay a large part of that on the sports media who seem to have completely lost any shred of creativity and individuality in reporting.  There is nothing more pathetic than a group of sheep all following after the same stupid story.

I haven't paid much attention to the Farve stuff, but I would love to share my slanderish conspiracy theory just the same.

Farve's adulation rush has worn off since his formal retirement that was treated with the same exposure and tribute as the assasination of JFK. He retired because the Packers once again, ruined his dream to play with Randy Moss. He is having his agent Buzz Cook, do the dirty work. A respected reporter(name escapes me) for a non respected publication in LA broke the story. No big media outlet(outside of Entertainment and Sports Network) would touch it. The reporter has been covering the NFL for several years and he believes the feeling out by Cook has legs. Several unnamed sources say that he has been gauging their interest for Brett Farve. Now Brett knows about it, but to protect his image Cook will take this knowledge to his grave. He is doing this all on his own, if the story leaks, which it did, it is on him, Brett Corleone, I mean Farve can not be touched.

The question we should be asking is what team, outside of the NFC North is a Brett Farve away from the promised land?

Tampa Bay - They only currently have 5 quarterbacks on their roster, Gruden likes 6 or 7, they were improved and of course Gruden and Farve have history.

San Francisco - They were thought to be sweethearts last year but maybe that was a year or two premature. They could be the Rams of 99,  the Patriots of 2000.

Carolina - Need him, but I see no connection. Can the over-rated John Fox, orchestrate a rebound or are they on rebuild. Enough weopons to keep Brett happy, I think not

Seattle - Holmgren, but team is going the wrong way and they have Hussyback.

Vikes/Bears - Need could use, but no way does GB trade him there.

Kansas City - Need and intriguing. Might be close enough with a veteran quarterback, healthy Johnson, second year Bowe.

Jets - Need,  but I really doubt we will see Broadway Brett.

Atlanta - Close to home, but that team is too far away from winning for Brett.

Washington - Pretty happy with Campbell, already and not enough weapons, new coach, although Zorn might be Brett's type of guy.

So even if this story has legs I see no place for him to go that would be better than Green Bay, outside of the Minnesota Vikings.

So, it might be true, but it won't matter because where would he go? My favorite thing I heard was the quote from Brett where he states that even though he retired people won't leave it alone.

One way to solve that you prima Donna, file your papers if you are so sure.

I'm certain that if Favre has his way, he will absolutely be playing for a warm weather team.

Jags & Brian Williams Fighting Rumor About Profane Tirade
    Fri Apr 4, 2008

The Florida Times-Union reports Jaguars HC Jack Del Rio and Jaguars owner Wayne Weaver responded to recent reports about provocative remarks police say were made by CB Brian Williams. Williams, according to recently obtained court records, launched into a racially charged tirade filled with profane and sexual remarks directed at Jacksonville police during a 2006 drunken driving arrest. Del Rio said he recently spoke with Williams, who denied having made such remarks. "He basically said he did not make comments like that and was offended by the fact that it was said that he had," Del Rio said. "Brian has assured me he has a different version [of what occurred] and I think it's important to let the process play out here. You have two individuals that have a different interpretation of what occurred. He has the legal right to pursue and do the things he's doing and I think we have to allow that right to be carried out." After receiving a six-month probation sentence and having his license suspended as a result of his guilty plea following the incident in September, 2006, Williams returned to court asking to withdraw the plea. He was allowed to withdraw the plea three months ago, which means a new case will be tried. A pretrial hearing is scheduled for Monday.

    Matt Leinart Won't be Charged
    Fri Apr 4, 2008

TMZ.com reports Arizona Cardinals QB Matt Leinart will not be charged with funneling alcohol to minors....even though there may be proof (as in 12 proof) to the contrary. Pictures of Leinart surfaced earlier this week. At least Leinart didn't use his million dollar throwing arm to deliver a 12 ounce shot to the face -- the face of what appears to be a drunk chick. The question, is the beer bong-ee underage? Drinking age in Arizona is 21. The Maricopa County Sherriff's office tells TMZ they are not investigating.

Don't worry, some one with a soap box will be searching college year books or face book, looking to find the "definitive proof" that Matt Leinart is the scumbag they are positive his is based on the assumption that some chic in a picture has got to be under age, because we all know from personal experience that Mat Lienert is a predator and exactly as bad as Marc Chumura.

If there is a football god, it will catch up with them. Although one could argue it did last year. Clear cut favorites in NFC up until a couple of weeks before the playoffs, and then they went went away one and done with the 1st seed. Yes, I hope they get RainMan and Chris"I still think I am at VaTech"Henry.

Implosion waiting to happen anyway, with a stable force like Terrell Owens on your team.

John Mara Surprised Re-Seeding Rule Didn't Even Get to a Vote
Sun Apr 6, 2008

Fox Sports reports a proposal that would have used records rather than standing as a division winner to determine home-field advantage didn't even receive enough support to garner an owners vote. "I was surprised at how little support there was," said New York Giants co-owner John Mara, who had championed the idea. "Clearly, opponents of that rule had done their lobbying behind the scenes and were very effective." As a wild-card team last season, the Giants headed to Tampa Bay for a first-round playoff game. New York (10-6) had a better record than the Bucs (9-7), but Tampa Bay had won the NFC South. The AFC had a similar scenario with AFC South runner-up Jacksonville (11-5) playing at AFC North champion Pittsburgh (9-7). "I don't like the idea of a 12-4 wild-card having to travel to a 9-7 or 8-8 division winner," Mara said. "That strikes me as unfair, but it's not the end of the world." Other clubs were concerned about diminishing the importance of winning a division and relinquishing the financial windfall that comes with hosting a home playoff game by doing so. Conversely, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell believed re-seeding could spice up what is becoming a largely meaningless Week 17. Told he suffered a "humiliating loss" with the proposal's overwhelming rejection, a laughing Mara said, "That's OK. It's been a pretty good year."

Cowboys Eyeing Chris Henry?
Mon Apr 7, 2008

The New York Daily News reports the Bengals finally cut WR Chris Henry after he was arrested this past week for the fifth time since December of 2005. Maybe he can reunite in Dallas with his West Virginia teammate CB Pacman Jones, who is expected to be traded to the Cowboys.

Unhappy Brian Urlacher Skipping Bears' Off-Season Program
Mon Apr 7, 2008

The Chicago Tribune reports LB Brian Urlacher said Sunday he plans to skip the first day of workouts, slated to begin Monday, and left open the strong possibility that he will bypass the Bears' entire voluntary off-season program, which includes organized team activities (OTAs). The face of the Bears franchise informed the team of his intentions to remain in Arizona rather than attend the program at Halas Hall. Urlacher cannot be fined for missing voluntary activities, according to the NFL Players Association collective-bargaining agreement. But the team could take internal action that stops short of formal discipline. For example, when RB Thomas Jones and LB Lance Briggs skipped the voluntary off-season portion of workouts in 2006, HC Lovie Smith briefly demoted the starters upon their return. For reasons unrelated to his contract, Urlacher avoided some off-season workouts last season. He didn't want to comment publicly on his decision for this season. Urlacher wants a contract extension but has been relatively low-key about it, leaving the negotiating to his representatives, who have been in constant discussions with the Bears for the last six weeks. Urlacher, who is signed through 2011, made $3.95 million last season—the same salary he is scheduled to make in 2008. Since last season ended, the Bears have rewarded TE Desmond Clark and DT Alex Brown with multiyear extensions, and even gave QB Kyle Orton a one-year extension. Urlacher said his recovery from neck surgery has nothing to do with his status for Monday. He has been cleared to participate and anticipates making a full recovery when he returns to the field.

Girlacker, big surprize, you could see this coming when he was whining in the offseason about being the 11th paid in league linebacker.

Chris Henry and Dallas, I, like others saw that coming the second he was released.

Sammy, thanks for trying help get me on the site earlier today, I am at home and everything is fine. Just the remote computer, that used to work doesn't.

They need to sign up Dwight Smith and trade for McKinnie, too.

NFL Owners Considering Life Without a Salary Cap
Tue Apr 8, 2008

The Sports Business Journal reports NFL owners could be actually considering life without a salary cap. Facing labor uncertainty and rising costs, league officials and owners claim for the first time in nearly two decades to be thinking about such a scenario. Long the foundation for the NFL's economic and popular growth, the salary cap is still the business system the league prefers, even if the union, as it maintains, does not. But while the cap was considered sacred in the past, now some owners, and even Commissioner Roger Goodell, are publicly leaving open the possibility of a future without a cap. "Analysis that we are going through right now indicates that it is difficult for our clubs to stay up with what we have to pay the players," Goodell told reporters last week at the league's annual meeting in Palm Beach, Fla. "There are a lot of owners that aren't concerned about an uncapped season from that standpoint because the salary cap is so high right now. "We will continue to look and make sure we can find a system that works, and my presumption is that there may be some kind of salary cap, there may not be," he added. The league also has a salary floor that is at least 85 percent of the cap. John York, the San Francisco 49ers owners, called a cap "not absolutely necessary," though like Goodell, he prefaced his comment by saying he preferred one.

Michael Vick Not Playing Football in Prison, But...
Tue Apr 8, 2008

ESPN reports QB Michael Vick might be tossing a football around in prison, but according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, it's far from organized. In an interview with the New York Daily News on Monday, Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank said Vick is playing ball in prison to keep his body in shape, his arm limber and to pass the time. "Apparently, there was a prison football team and he played quarterback for both sides," Blank told the Daily News. However, federal prison officials told the Journal-Constitution that Vick did not arrive at the Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary Camp in time to participate in the facility's football season. When told of Blank's account of Vick's football activity at the prison, a spokesman for Leavenworth sounded "incredulous," according to the Journal-Constitution. "I don't know what you're talking about," Kevin Johnson told the newspaper. A spokesperson for the U.S. Bureau of Prisons told the Journal-Constitution, however, that Vick might be throwing a football in his free time. "It's not unheard of for inmates to toss around a football," spokesperson Tracy Billingsley told the newspaper. "But there just are no games until the fall." She also clarified to the newspaper that the inmates play only flag football at the facility.

Reading between the lines... they're unhappy with the "real" reason the NFL structure "works". Not the salaray cap, but the salary floor.

Reads to me like there are enough owners that would like to be able to spend what they want on salary, i.e. not as much as they are now.

This is why I always "side" with the players, in general. Sure, they sometimes get greedy or overpaid, but the owners are a hundred times worse.

The salary cap doesn't work because it keeps athletes from being overpaid, it works because it keeps greedy owners honest. They remove the cap, and they will instantly become baseball. If not more so, due to the short length of football players careers. They would be stupid to not take the highest offer, and the highest offer would be from Jerry Jones.

John Elway Questions Jay Cutler's Actions
Wed Apr 9, 2008

AP reports former Denver Broncos QB John Elway understands why QB Jay Cutler recently called out a troubled teammate. He just wouldn't have taken the same approach. "I was surprised to hear it actually," the former Denver Broncos quarterback said Wednesday. Cutler, fed up with all the drama surrounding WR Brandon Marshall, lashed out at his No. 1 receiver and fellow third-year star, who suffered a gash on his right forearm while messing around last month. "He's not my favorite person right now," the current Broncos quarterback said of Marshall. Elway didn't think this particular incident necessitated Cutler's ire. "Him cutting his arm is not that big of deal to me," Elway said. "Obviously, he was wrestling with his brother. He's still a kid." Marshall, who emerged as Cutler's primary target in his breakout 2007 season, said he was horsing around with his older brother at a resort in Orlando, Fla., when he fell into a television set, cutting an artery, a vein, a nerve, two tendons and three muscles in his right arm. Elway appreciates Cutler's attempt to become more of a vocal leader. "As a quarterback, you've got to take a leadership role," Elway said. "Jay has that last year under his belt. I'm sure he feels a lot better where he's going. They need someone to take over. That's a good move on Jay's part. "Bottom line, there's talk and there's wins," he said.

I think he could have said this in the press conference. I thought it laughable when he made the comment that people wouldn't just let him stay retired.

Farve is the one who seems to be having withdrawls from being on Sports Center every night.
